Belarus time zone usage now UTC+3hrs the year around, followed Russia time zone of Western Russia ! BRTPC website of transmitter net company mentioned about their local "wire broadcasting network". RUE "Belarusian Broadcasting Centre" informs that as of Feb 1, 2012 will broadcast closure 2 and 3 audio programs: "Radio Channel Culture" and "Capital" of wire broadcasting network in the city of Minsk and regional centers of Belarus. Closing the broadcast due to low demand for public services, for broadcast audio programs: "Radio Channel Culture" and "Capital" in wire broadcasting networks in Minsk and regional centers of Belarus, the lack of a trading network of receiving equipment, as well as the loss ratio for the company to provision of broadcasting services of the Receive audio programs, "Radio Channel Culture" and "Capital" is possible in the range of very high frequency (VHF) at frequencies of 65.9-74 MHz and 87.5 -108 MHz to appropriate receiving equipment. Instead of BR1, BR2, Stalica, now BR1 only on 3-channeled wired network from Febr 1st, 2012. Similar cuts on shortwave happened already? Missed since approx. (wb, wwdxc BC-DX TopNews Jan 15/18/26) Indeed Radio Belarus is now on 11730 kHz, noted at 1300 UT with co-channel interference (NHK from Tashkent it seems) which also makes it difficult to assess the modulation. But I think distortion and buzz are the same than previously on 7390 kHz, indicating the use of the old 100/150 kW transmitter from there rather than the 15 x 5 kW block so far run on 7360 kHz. A look at what may have been history now: 6010 and 6070 kHz site at Brest: 6040/7265/7280 kHz site at Grodno/Hrodna: 6190/7235 kHz site at Mogilev/Mahiliou [veiled as Orsha since URSS era]: Note how these facilities are almost clones of each other, with the antennas consisting of cages, mounted almost vertically between the two masts. These are apparently former nearfield jamming sites, with their very equipment until recently being used for broadcast distribution instead. The sites are also mentioned as origins of mediumwave outlets, of which 1008 and 1026 still remain (both listed as 7 kW, indicating Tesla SRV 7 transmitters However, as far as I know was such a co-location no usual practice. BC-DX TopNews #1050] "Dear friends at Radio Bulgaria, I was shocked to receive the message Friday evening, January 13, that Radio Bulgaria has decided to close all shortwave transmissions by the end of January 2012. Radio Bulgaria has been a stable international broadcaster from before I was born, and is still well heard here in Denmark on shortwaves. I heard your DX-programme as late as Friday January 13, 2012, at 2240-2300 on 7400 kHz with SINPO 54544 with slight adjacent interference. Radio Bulgaria is still broadcasting in ten languages to abroad with well balanced news, comments about life in Bulgaria, mixed with the very nice Bulgarian folkmusic. Personally I had the great opportunity after the EDXC Conference in Melnik to visit Radio Bulgaria on August 22, 2011, where we had excellent guidance to the studio and office facilities by Rositsa Petkova and Alexander Markov from the English Section. Therefore it is with my deepest regret to hear, that it has been decided to stop broadcasting on shortwaves and medium waves by the end of this month and to dismantle the shortwave transmitters afterwards. My sincere feelings to go those persons, who will loose their jobs. Will the internet broadcasts of Radio Bulgaria continue unchanged or will there also be reductions ? About 95% of the adult population in Denmark has internet access, so for them it will not be a big loss, if the broadcasts continue unchanged on the internet. But many developing countries in the world do not have this possibility, so the closure of the shortwave broadcasts must be a big loss for them. For me as a dedicated shortwavelistener for 54 years, it will of course also be a big loss. Anker Petersen-DEN, Chairman of the Danish Shortwave Club International". Send your protests now! The Bulgarians always denied any clandestine bcasts and jamming outlets towards Caucasus and UKR/BLR/MDA SSR's from Varna site before. The old communist party "old boy network" was always lasting effect longer ... I guess also Turkish communist "Bizim Radio" came from both, GDR in winter season, and Bulgaria in summer season. And Radio España Independiente was always narrowed on direction findings by western monitoring stations, coming from Saftica, Romania site instead, as well as Portuguese Communist Party Radio too. Secondly, I found some mentions of a SARFT Transmitting Station 761 near Xiaotao in Yong'an County, Fujian Province, which has at least one Chinese-made 100 kW SW transmitter of model SW-100-F (a Continental clone I think). Presumably it's another jamming site. Unfortunately both of these stations seem to be in low-resolution areas in the usual imagery sources. [later] I've checked SARFT Station 761 again, and most or all of the site is now visible in high-ish resolution imagery from 2004 in G.E., near Sanxing Village, Xiaotao, Yong'an City, Fujian: row of curtain antennas aligned W-E around 25 44 25 N 117 10 45 E and some more antennas around 25 44 42 N 117 10 50 E and possibly also around 25 44 20 N 117 10 49 E I suppose the transmitter buildings are at 25 44 26 N 117 11 01 E but the image quality in this area is quite poor. The three short news items for the newspaper and radio only now are the chief editor Andrea Marsanich and another employee. So said Marsanich, pursuant to the issuer since 1974: "The fear is that if one of us and the other on vacation and becomes ill, Radio Fiume / Rijeka that day or those days could not have programs in Italian. We need some 'good will because there are suitable candidates to come to work in our preparation. The economic situation does not allow for optimism. In the past we have had some help from the Italian Union and the Member of the Sabor, Furio Radin. Apart from these serious problems, we will move forward on this road, marking the events of our national community and not give up completely. "Fiume Radio (Radio Rijeka) was born September 16, 1945. The microphone are the announcers O?egovic Barbarina in Croatian and in Italian Milkovic Ida Modica. The headquarters is in a house on a Stanger 9 a Volosca. For a short time he moved to Cosala. Following programs are also broadcast from the Government Palace. In 1951 the radio station, which is part of the Croatian Radio and Television, takes place in the course. Are transmitted at the beginning stage plays and radio magazines first. The daily schedule in Italian is almost continuous but, following the well-known political events, live moments of extreme hardship, suffering for a long time a strong restriction and is greatly reduced in the areas of programming. The dark period for the Italian language broadcasts is in the late '50s and '60s, when it is broadcast only news written by freelancers. The first signs of recovery occur in the early sixties. In 1974, reconstructs the Italian writing as an independent broadcaster, with the first two and then four journalists (Agnese Superina, Andrea Marsanich, Virna Baraba, Iva Pavletic). The aim is to create bilingual broadcaster that meets the information needs of a community 'minority, which preserves the identity' of the Italian minority linguistic and cultural, to promote and spread Italian culture affirming coexistence between Croats and Italians. The station disseminates three newsletters every day (at 10, 12, 14 hrs) and a radio news (at 16 hrs) in Italian admissible on medium wave on 594, 774, 783, 1125, 1134, 1197 kHz. Is received in some areas of Veneto and Trentino regions bordering on the Adriatic. The programs (between Italian and Croatian) are irradiated by four transmitters, each day from 6 to 24 hrs. At the end of 2005, the publishing company had achieved a turnover of over eight million kuna (about one million euros), far exceeding the other seven existing centers in the Croatian Radio and Television. The preparation of four news is the daily commitment of the Italian editorial headed by editor Franco Rocchi (are part of Agnese Superina, Virna Baraba and Andrea Marsanich). The station has about forty employees and ten freelancers and correspondents in Opatija, Crikvenica, Rab, Krk and Delnice and can be heard via the web satellite in Europe, North Africa, Middle East (Hot Bird 6, 13 degr East) in North America (Telstar 5, 97 degr East), in Central and South America (NSS 806, 40.5 degr West) in Australia and New Zealand (Optus B 3, 152 degr East). Among the future projects, the first of the workforce reduction, the main objective was to expand the space in Italian Italian-funded (which allows the creation of specialist programs and in-depth). We are glad that our tx for the first time worked with 2.4 kW using the aerial. So for coming Sunday, Jan. 29th, we are on plan to test with this power. Because parts of the equipment do not yet stand full power for a longer time, tests will last only for some minutes, starting every full and half hour, beginning at 7 UTC. We ask for your reports and audio files, and your opinion concerning modulation / sound, so we can compare it with our soon to come Optimod AM soundprocessor. Some testing is likely on Saturday morning, using low power and different equipment. Please report this, too, so we can see the difference in using low and higher power. Thanks to everybody who supported us until now with reports, jingles, internet, and... In a short time we will send our QSL for every correct report we got! We offer booking time for broadcasting your programs and advertising for absolutely low prices. Please contact us for details. If you want to help our station, maybe producing programs in German, English, Dutch ... or jingles, please drop us a line. A car radio receiving Digital Radio Mondiale (DRM) signals was put for public display at Auto Expo India held in New Delhi (5-11th Jan 2012). Developed by Delphi which is a leading global supplier of electronics and technologies for automotives, the new device can do Analogue AM and FM, as well DRM Digital radio. The receiver uses the NXP processor which recently added DRM capability. Delphi has a history of developing other Digital Radio Platforms (HD, DAB) and is offering solutions tailored to individual OEM requirements. The device is simulcast compatible and also package protected for DRM+ with a DRM compatible receiver antenna (short stub wide band). It should be available for the market by Q4 2012. (DRM Newsletter, Jan 2012) Picture this: an emerging market of over a billion people, in which the national public radio broadcaster can access over 99% of the population. Imagine the same country soon using just over 70 updated medium wave transmitters to cover 70% of its area digitally through the Digital Radio Mondiale (DRM) standard. Then imagine travelling from the administrative to the commercial capital whilst listening to uninterrupted news, sport and music. That country is India, and the new digital audio standard is DRM. Unusual to hear anything at all here from VOI at this hour, but it did reactivate earlier today. French is supposedly the final European language until 2100 UT 30 degrees per Aoki but 290 degrees per HFCC, which makes a lot more sense for audibility in Europe. However, Atsunori Ishida logged it in Japanese at 2054 UT on Jan 23, in which case the 30-degree antenna also USward should have been used. Besides their severe transmitter problems, I have also suspected they have antenna problems, or at least put 9526-/9525- kHz on the 'wrong' ones, as the 13-15 UT signal in NoAM went from sufficient to very insufficient. 9526-, Jan 24 at 1415 UT, VOI is on again with talk in Indonesian, poor signal with flutter, but no QRM during this hour only; much weaker than RRI 9680 kHz. But probably much warmer than at your location. A little comment on VoINS transmitter to contribute: INDONESIA (History 1996) Back in Summer 1996, when they were installing the Bonto Sunggu site in South Sulawesi, I was in Ujung Pandang (now Makassar) for some months, thus also monitored the test transmissions. In addition to the External Service on 9525 kHz they had at certain times of the day up to eight frequencies carrying RRI Jakarta Programa Nasional simultaneously (from all sites), plus the old tropical band txm on 4777 kHz ! Later in the year the test transmissions evolved into a regular schedule, they even had two National Programmes, ID'ing as RRI Indonesia programa satu and dua respectively. What happened to all five of the Bonto Sunggu transmitters? I don't see them listed nor mentioned anywhere ? Have they in the relatively short period of 15 years all broken down due to neglect and lack of maintenace ? It's hardly possible that half a dozen txms are so worn out that they cannot even be used as spares ! If WRTH 2012 is right, could it be that they have been shipped to Jakarta Cimanggis ? For what purpose ? They couldn't have taken the antennas with them ?! (Gerhard Werdin, on visit in Bandung, INS, Jan 29, 2012) Beste Gruesse, Gerhard On Mon Jan 16 2012, Noel Green-UK wrote: Re Voice of Indonesia (VOI) external service is off the air last few days. This is because of technical fault in the transmitter. VOI is in search of correct spares from the original equipment manufacturer. But it is not so easy for such old transmitter and expensive too. We hope VOI will be back on the air very shortly. It is interesting to note that the 2012 WRTH says that at Jakarta Cimanggis there are 2X50kW, 3X100kW and 9X250kW shortwave transmitters. The TDP listing shows the following at Jakarta Cimanggis: A series of 50 / 100 kW transmitters installed between 1950-1974 and now believed withdrawn from service. Then there are these 3X100kW Harris of 1982 1X250kW THO of 1983 (ordered/or in service) 4X250kW MAR of 1992 3X250kW MAR of 1995 plus 5X250kW MAR of 1996 (ordered.or in service) at Bontosongu 1X250kW THO of 1983 (ordered/or in service) at Padang Cermin As far as I'm aware, 9680 is regularly on air with a domestic RRI programme, but now the 9525/6 transmitter is short of spares. So what happened to all of the other transmitters? Were they installed at all - and which of them is used on 9525/6? Maybe all the cannibalising that can be done to keep it on air is why there is only one transmitter left for the FS? (Noel R. Green-UK, dxld Jan 16, 2012) ITALY RAI MW frequencies, night program. Italian local medium wave: the adventure is over? Several months have passed since my last reports from local broadcasters Italian active on medium wave (521-1611 kHz) a spectrum virtually completely forgotten by the public served by the modulation frequency. In Italy Radio RAI has long been dismantled plants repeating Radio 2 and Radio 3, leaving standing only a network of broadcasters "OM" on Radio 1. In 2011 in particular there was a hive of commercial initiatives, many of which are experimental. All these initiatives have in common a kind of "formal defect" on medium wave, apart from the RAI station can not be considered official because there is no licensing in this band of radio frequencies. In practice it is as if these stations have taken the time machine and go back to the seventies were, or at least to the period before the famous Mammi Law. In this group there were two semi-pirate broadcasters have been able to consolidate their programming: Radio and Challenger Broadcastitalia / Amitaliana, operating, respectively, from the areas of Padua and Rome. Or should I say worked because this morning on the news channels operated by Bclnews.it, much followed by the Italian community of listeners hobbies, sensational news appeared: plants Broadcastitalia of 1485 kHz were closed by the authorities (not news about Challenger Radio I have, but I think hearing it on air recently). A seizure that - if it is confirmed - striking but not surprising at all: in recent months have come to the attention of ministerial notifications received several managers of stations that simply are not "provided" by the current regulations. I imagine that many already know my position on the alleged obsolescence of the medium wave. It is certainly true that it has lost meaning the use of these frequencies to cover a large pool of listening, national or even regional scale. There are no more the technical and economic conditions to continue to use transmitters that are progressively disabled in fact across Europe. Completely different is the use of medium wave on very local scales with very low power levels and business objectives and non-profit, but above all social, educational, community. I understand that in the absence of precise rules for the authorities to consider it appropriate to intervene with such severity. But I would hope that this episode (if confirmed, I stress) may be just the first step towards full regulation - on the British model, and American - of low-power medium wave and amplitude modulation, in Italy and maybe in the whole range the European Union. It is Burmese of Myanmar Radio to hear as of 1330 UT on 7110 kHz. I was able to receive it on 7110 kHz at 1140 on Jan 24. (Sei-ichi Hasegawa-JPN, dxld Jan 24) 7110 kHz on Jan 24 around 1405 UT, very weak carrier served as BFO for some hams, but none on 7100 kHz where I was looking for new Myanma Radio frequency. Then I see report from Ron Howard that it was indeed on 7110 kHz instead of 7100 kHz today when he heard it at 1237-1337 UT, and not // 5985.83 or 5915 kHz. Variety of EZL and indigenous music; the Carpenters song "Top of the World" sung in vernacular; 1329 UT their signature indigenous theme music and four chimes followed by one lone chime (their local ToH). Initially bothered by strong OTH radar (7095-7155 kHz), but that was gone by 1320 UT; mostly fair after that. Now positive this is NOT // 5985.83 kHz, so my Jan 22 comments were wrong (must have heard similar type music on both frequencies and thought they were // ); also not // 5915 kHz. At 0450-0500 UT Jan 26 observed another Jamming sound against SOH Taiwan on 13800 kHz, not familiar so far yet, listen to the attached record. But heard the normal Firedrake carillion + flute and drums music on 13665 kHz at 0445-0500 UT, BUT AGAINST WHOM ? Maybe parked here on free channel to further usage ? First time I have heard a Monday segment in English; "news bulletin"; Malawi hydro- power project, "The project coordinator, Honorable Philip Koti Wala, spoke to 98.6 SRS FM"; "Last week the Deputy Mayor of Juba City Council, David Lokonga ordered reorganization of Jebel market. He spoke to 98.6 SRS FM on Monday at the site of the demolitions"; announced their change in scheduling as heard before; started out fair to poor; faded down to unusable by tune out at 1650 UT. Very nice to find even more English programming here besides the Saturday "Road to Peace" show! (Ron Howard-CA-USA, dxld Jan 29) BBC WS re-awards transmission contract. Mark raises some good questions, this is the situation as I understand it: The four UK ex BBCWS transmitter sites (Woofferton, Skelton, Rampisham & Orfordness) are owned and operated by Babcock (ex Merlin/VT). However all the BBCWS overseas SW sites (Ascension, Cyprus, Seychelles, Singapore etc) still belong to the BBC, but are operated by Babcock (ex Merlin/VT) on behalf of the BBC. Even though staffed by Babcock employees, they are still BBC-owned transmitters and have the BBC name on the gate. The ownership of overseas sites remains with the BBC because the original agreement to set up these foreign sites was between the UK government/BBC and the foreign host country. Similarly with overseas FM relays any licensing or bilateral agreement for the BBC to broadcast on FM is between the BBC and the foreign broadcaster / transmission company, with Babcock contracted to provide the satellite feed. Presumably the licence to broadcast is with the actual programme provider i.e BBC, but who actually operates the various FM sites overseas will vary from country to country - usually the state broadcaster or telecom company I presume. Arqiva (exNational Grid Wireless exCrown Castle) has only ever had the contract for the BBCs domestic transmitter network, not the SW sites. (Dave Kenny-UK, BrDXC UK, Jan 15) I think that, for practical purposes, Dave's explanation is correct. However, I also believe that, technically, the overseas shortwave sites (with the exception of Ascension) are owned by the FCO, though they have always been referred to as "BBC relay stations". This was (and is) because the host countries were more comfortable in signing government-to- government agreements, rather than ones with the BBC. As Mark points out, Ascension is the exception, having always been a fully BBC-owned station (though, since 1997, operated by a private contractor). As Ascension is British territory, the complication of dealing with a foreign government never arose. The FM relays are in a different category as they are always (?or nearly always?) just BBC (or Babcock) transmitters hosted at someone else's site and using the host's premises, power supplies, masts, etc. I have visited BBC FM relays in Ghana and Kenya. The one just outside Accra is at a large GBC transmitting station that handles a variety of FM and TV transmissions for various clients. In a large hall, overshadowed by all sorts of other equipment, there was a not-very-large FM transmitter (basically, just a box) with a not-very-large cheap sticker on it saying "BBC relay station Accra" (or similar), which struck me as amusing, as one thinks of a relay station as being something that covers hundreds of acres!
