Presumably HAARP test during publicized period and frequency range, per tip from Walt Salmaniw, Haida Gwaii-CAN. Indistinguishable from other carriers on H2Ofall, unlike CODAR circa 5400 kHz with diagonal traces. 5200 kHz cuts off abruptly at 02.44* UT, and not found further visually or audibly in this or many other possible bands up to 9.6 MHz. Shouldn't HAARP transmit some kind of clear ID ? I vaguely recall it does have an assigned callsign. Many DXers, especially those who chased tropical band stations, are fa- miliar with the unusual "swish swish swish" interference sounds of CODAR utility stations. The name is an acronym for "Coastal Ocean Dynamics Applications Radar". On an SDR receiver's spectrum display, the CODAR pulses are seen as a stream of diagonal lines, generally 25 kHz wide. About a 30 minute drive from my home is a nice spot for impromptu coastal DXing called the Westport Jetty in Westport, WA (about six miles north of the well-known Grayland DXpedition area). I recently decided to investigate a couple of antennas near the Westport Jetty, which I suspected is a CODAR installation. Sure enough ! The latitude and longitude of station "WSP1" correspond to the information found in this list of CODAR locations. The pair of vertical antennas are about a hundred feet apart in a meadow of dune grass. CODAR installations typically have a transmitter and receiver in close proximity, and most use the HF frequency range. A good portion of the allocated frequencies fall within the tropical bands In fact, on a Grayland DXpedition a few years ago I counted 12 sometimes overlapping CODAR transmissions audible & visible below 5 MHz. Below are some photos of the "WSP1" CODAR installation, and a screen cap- ture of its signal centered on 4463 kHz. It's interesting to see the source of these transmissions that interfered with reception of tropical band DX in the past... now, not so much :^( 73, (Guy Atkins Aberdeen-WA-USA, DXplorer Aug 7) ALASKA Guy, These CODAR stations are as ugly as the sounds they unfor- tunately transmit. Have you been able to avoid them dominating the radio spectrum being so close to the operating transmitter location ? Do their signals bleed into other frequency ranges (I know you focus a lot of your time and attention on the medium wave band). They use one of two power ranges: 10 to 50 watts at most, while the higher resolution / shorter range CODAR sites are only 1 to 5 watts ... sometimes even less, from the information I've seen. So, they do not interfere with DXing at all, unless you are trying to listen to a 60 meters station within their passband (25 kHz). Medium wave is likewise unaffected. At the Grayland DXpedition site (specifically the Casa Sea Esta AirBnB) it is very quiet, except when the wind ramps up at the small group of wind turbines to the east ! They cause some hash on the lower 1/3rd of mediumwave, even with direction antennas. I believe there are 16 & 25 MHz CODAR transmitters active in the Strait of Georgia and Strait of San Juan de Fuca, BC. Remember the old "Russian Woodpecker" ? That was a far worse interference source. A couple of checks from past recordings suggest, that the schedule WRTH Web App for 1035 kHz {Radio Eli, Tartu Estonia site,ed.} would be correct, including Belarusian on Wednesdays. (Mauno Ritola-FIN, wor Aug 16) "Is no one paying attention?!" - Used to be what some called a Hauserism if I recall correct? What could be added is that a single broadband log.- periodic antenna is the only one kept at Saftica. Thus such a missed fre- quency change is a pretty simple mistake to happen there, since no antenna switching is involved. I saw another incorrect story circulating, concerning TWR transmissions from Armenia: The report*) about their cancellation, effective July 1st, with TWR giving no explanation and only stating that they have to plans for a later revival, concerned only the Ukrainian programme. A spot check at 18.20 UT just confirmed that Farsi and Arabic are still being transmit on 1377 and 1350 kHz, respectively (schedule, unless there have been un- reported changes: 1377 kHz Central Asian languages 17.10-17.55UT and Farsi 18.00-19.30 UT; 1350 kHz Arabic 18.00-20.30 UT). What could be worth a research (in case you still consider these things relevant of course) is if the 1035 kHz outlet of Radio Eli still carries TWR programming. All following this tip: "EGYPT - Back on air - but still zero modulation. It appears that the Abis transmitter had not shut down for good sometime in mid April. Starting Au- gust 1, I hear them again daily on 9872 kHz at 15:00 UT mixing with CRI China, producing a heterodyne. No programme heard - just "dead air". 9902 kHz heard around 17:45 UT only on August 1 and again on 9902 kHz at 17:30 UT tonight. 9892 kHz on August 1 from 19:00 UT. So far, no transmissions have been heard later in the evenings. I still wonder why they bother to come on air at all. All those kilowatts are just going to waste. "Nippon Hoso Kyokai (NHK) was founded in August 1926, as a broadcasting monopolist. New legislation changed the rules of the game in 1950, and added the option of commercial broadcasting to the radio landscape. NHK itself became more independent from Japanese governments, as a non-profit organization. It was now in a position to collect receivers' fees. The new "Broadcast Law" also required NHK to run a foreign-broadcasting service on shortwave - that would be Radio Japan. Shortwave hadn't been popular with Japan's government from the start - a ban on shortwave receivers was in place at the time,and it seems to have come as an unpleasant surprise to the country's rulers when a newly- established medium-wave transmitter from Nanking were received on Kyushu, Japan's southernmost main island, in 1932. Back many years ago (Gosh maybe 10 years ago?) I presented at the SWL Winter Fest a technical presentation of how the Voice Of Korea assembles their programs. Back then I had the URL's to access their content manage- ment server and yes the individual language programs were all the same collection of recorded files (which I had the ability to convert to MP3) but the spoken segments where recorded in each particular language. Nothing back then (and it is almost certainly still the same today) was "live" - the programming was a assembled collection of audio files reor- dered previously - the news was accentually a reading of yesterday's ar- ticles from the Rodong Sinmun party daily newspaper. I spent over 10 years frequently traveling in North Korea (I have reached all but one province), basically with a curiosity to understand the role of broadcasting and it's effect of the belief systems of Nth Koreans. What could be worth a research (in case you still consider these things relevant of course) is if the 1035 kHz outlet of Radio Eli still carries TWR programming. Would be significant in as far as these are now, or would have been, the only remaining AM transmissions of TWR in Europe. Yes, Radio Eli relays lots of programming from other stations, including TWR in Russian and Belarusian, Voice of Hope in Russian and Ukrainian, Voice of Martyrs, FEBC-affiliated Radio Teos, Germany's Missionswerk Friedenstimme etc all in Russian. TWR's global schedule is pretty accurate. However on WL5N's Kiwi at Fairbanks Alaska there was audio with US talk- show 'Coast to Coast AM'. ID on the half hour as "Radio 9-70, KFBX" which is in Fairbanks. 4850 kHz is the fifth harmonic of 970 kHz. The MWOffsets list has a February 2026 frequency measurement for KFBX of 969.9945 kHz varying up to 970.003 kHz, which would give a fifth harmonic frequency range of 4849.973 kHz up to 4850.015 kHz. If I see/hear this 60 metre band carrier again, I will try some overnight recording to determine a fadeout time. I note that you had an UNID on 4850 kHz back in March, so perhaps that was the same transmiter I had last evening. A reminder that there will be a rare Solar Eclipse visible over part of Western Europe, including the UK, tomorrow late afternoon/evening which could have some interesting effects on propagation on MW/LW and the lower SW bands. The total eclipse starts in the Arctic around 17.00 UTC passing through part of Greenland and Iceland, but the main area of totality will be in Spain where it ends just after 18.30 UTC over the Balearic Islands. Map and more details in August "Communication" PDF.formatmagazine - pages #5 and #6. Here in the UK the partial eclipse will peak around 18.10 UTC (1910 BST) with between 90% and 95% totality. But DX could be possible in the half hour or so before and after this peak. Some possible MW stations to try for: Spain: 540 (Barcelona), 666 (Barcelona), 783 (Barcelona), 873 (Zaragoza & Santiago de la Compostela) 990 (Bilbao), 999 (Madrid), 1026 (Oviedo), 1044 Valladolid, 1081 (La Coruna), 1179 (Valencia), 1287 kHz (Burgos). Portugal (630 Miranda do Douro & 666 kHz Braganca). Algeria (LW Tipaza 252, 531, 576, 891, 981, 1422 kHz) Morocco LW Nador 171 kHz. 531 kHz could be an interesting channel with initially the Faroes and then Algeria potentially being enhanced. Listeners in the south of England could also try for BBC Radio Scotland on 810 kHz It may help to check the bands the day before (i.e today !) or the day af- ter to enable you to make a comparison during the eclipse. And if you have an SDR you could to record sections of the band during the eclipse I noticed when DXing during previous solar eclipses in 1999 (in Newfound- land, U.K. at all-Europe Normandie to Bulgaria Blacksea area and 2015 (in the far north of Scotland) the effects on propagation were quite short- lived, but those eclipses occurred during the daytime whereas this one is happening towards the onset of sunset when DX signals start to fade in under normal conditions. I was in Cambridge at the time of the 1999 eclipse (just a day earlier in the calendar from today's event) and remember Luxembourg-MW1440 kHz fading up very strongly for a prolonged period during the maximum extent of the (partial) eclipse, which was in the middle of the day. My guess is that today's event will see conditions much as they would be in the late afternoon in late September. Sunset in Reading today is at 19.32 GMT,but for propagation purposes it may be as if sunset was at least an hour earlier. (Partial eclipse begins in Reading at 17.17 GMT) I would also expect this enhanced dusk-time propagation to be noticeable on signals from a wide area, not just those from the Iberian Peninsula and the Maghreb. For example, I'll be watching for Lithuania on 666, 1386 and 1557 kHz to fade in. I'll find an electrically quiet spot outside and tune in ! {later} My observations, just using an ICFSW7600GR outdoors in Caversham: Shortly before 1800 GMT / 1900 BST, 810 kHz Scotland faded up, becoming good strength within a few minutes and remaining so over the next hour. It was playing sun-related songs. Next to fade up were stations to the east, including 1386 kHz and 1557 kHz Lithuania, both of which were copyable from shortly after 1800G/1900B - but this didn't last long and they faded down as the path of the eclipse moved towards the south of the UK. On a slightly more southerly path, 540 kHz Solt Hungary faded up a few mi- nutes after 1800G/1900B. Unlike the Lithuanian stations, Hungary stayed a good signal throughout. By 1820G/1920B, the peak of reception had clearly shifted to the south / southwest, with many Spanish stations coming in well, including on 954, 990, 999, 1044, 1080, and 1179 kHz. COPE Madrid on 999 kHz 50 kW had a huge signal! On the same path, Algeria was heard on 981 kHz (fair) and 891 kHz (weaker). Listening to the Spanish stations was interesting as they were reporting on the passage of the eclipse (totality passed through Spain between 18.26 and 18.33 GMT). Key takeaway for me: The rapid shifts in what was being heard over the course of less than 30 minutes shows how quickly the ionosphere reacts to changes in sunlight, and how the D-layer needs constant sun to do its un- helpful (for DXers) work of absorption. I hope everyone else enjoyed the eclipse,however they chose to observe it. Having done a quick scan around MW on Monday 10 Aug at around 1900 BST and found the band pretty quiet (of European stations),it was good to hear the MW band coming to life at around 1900-1915 BST on Eclipse Day (12 Aug). Spanish voices appeared around 1910BST on 783 kHz, 873 kHz (under BBC R. Norfolk), 990 kHz (underneath BBC R.5L), 999 kHz, 1044 kHz, 1080 kHz, 1179 kHz and 1287 kHz. At the same time Algeria on 1422 kHz and 891 kHz were coming in well. Shortly after (1920 BST) all the above stations had increased in strength and more appeared. Spain now appeared on 1269 kHz, 1341 kHz, 1485 kHz, and 1584 kHz. With having to monitor so many channels in a limited time, I didn't wait for individual station IDs. By now (1928 BST) SER Bilbao-ESP (pres) had nearly wiped out BBC R5L (Tywyn) on 990 kHz. By 1945-2000 BST, most of the above were still audib- le, but slightly weaker with more stations from the east dominating. Spain on 873 kHz never really dominated BBC Norfolk, they always remained well down in strength, but still present. A couple of stations were present on 630 kHz and 666 kHz at 1925 BST but were weak. I couldn't ID the language, but both had different programmes, so I can't say I heard Portugal, although one of them may have been ? Pop oldies on 576 kHz at 1847 BST may have been a relay of Caroline Flash- back? Another station on 3200 kHz with similar oldies at 1941 BST remained an UNID as well. At 2002 BST, the news in English was heard from Algeria on 891 kHz. I used the Qodosen DX-286 with its built-in whip aerial (no fence aerials involved ...) from a local high spot with good views of the sun, although most of the time was spent watching the radio's dial whilst writing notes. Center route of the eclipse shadow was just 800 metres north of my house location. Locally temperature degree degenerated by 4.5 centigrade from about 18 to 13.5 within a duration of 10 minutes between 1023 and 1035 UTC, in 500 metres above sea level. Primarily no exciting to report from the 49 mb conditions during solar eclipse. Teracom tests of R Sweden 6065 came in very strong - as usual - S=9+60 dB. BBCWS on special solar eclipse test to NoAM via Rampisham 7325 kHz heard here with 55555 S=5+40 dB. I happen to live in the area where we had a total eclipse (SW Germany, 40 km SW of Karlsruhe), so I decided to do some experiment myself. Report below. I myself was away to watch the event, but I had my receiver and tape re- corder set up to run for a few periods. I was lucky enough to see at least something through the clouds. Only the few mins where the eclipse was total (10.31-10.33 UT), the sky was so thickly covered with clouds that we could not see anything. It still got pretty dark. Back to MW reception. I monitored MW 891 kHZ. At my QTH (40 km SW of Karlsruhe), I can normally receive Hulsberg, Netherlands, 20 kW, very weakly during the day on this freq. Distance about 300 km, direction NW. These are the results of my four reception periods: 0930-0935 Reception weak as usual (Only partly readable). 1000-1010 Reception still weak, eclipse already about 50-70%. 1025-1040 Reception very clear. (O= 3/4). Reports of eclipse visibility in NoFrance and SoGermany (apparently the French had more luck). Detoriation in reception already noticeable direclty after peak of event. During latter part of period (10.35-10.40UT) a French speaking stn in the background. I can only think this to be ALG. However, normally this channnel carries Ar. Anyone has an explanation or alternative ? 10.50-11.05UT Reception still fair at start. Fr background stn gone. Yesterday I did the due trip, no matter that it needed to start the journey already the day before,directly from the work- place. At Erfurt a shunting accident resulted in a two hrs delay of the Warszawa - Frankfurt train, nevertheless I did my planned visit at Hessi- scher Rundfunk Frankfurt, where they currently also install new digital studios, it is currently under discussion, whether or not the cultural progr HR 2 maintains to bc from the current analogue studios instead. And they have of course also a canteen ... From Frankfurt I continued to Karlsruhe, the ICE train was not too heavily occupied, while we passengers received word that the traffic on the high- ways was virtually collapsed; who knows, how many drivers didn't manage to reach the annularity zone in time. I could also take a quick look at both the Biblis and Lampertheim SW facilities of IBB, which are not as impres- sive than other SW tx sites but anyway a couple of masts are significant. The decision to favour Karlsruhe proved as first price, properly in time the clouds opened, while I could on 576 kHz (not due to conviction, it was just a known SWR freq for me,contrary to the local FM scale) listen to the reports from Stuttgart and elsewhere, where it simply becamed dark and that was it. Following are my observations alongside with the ones from Michael Fuhr, who drove to a meadow out of Wiesbaden, while I was inside the city of Karlsruhe, resulting in less favourable MW reception situation: 10.05 UT The first skywave signals appeared, especially Wavre-BEL 1512kHz, which sounded like running full 300 kW instead of usual daytime power of just 25 kW. Seldom heard stns during daytime monitored at Wiesbaden: Virgin on 1215 kHz, TDF Lille-F 1377 kHz, Wavre-BEL 1512 kHz suggests using full power of 300 instead of nominal 25 kW. 10.23UT British local stns appeared like Fame 1512kHz, County Gold 1476kHz or Breeze AM 1359 and 1431kHz, all strong UK stns like BBC 909 kHz, Virgin 1215kHz, Talk Radio 1053 and 1089 kHz, and also BEL & HOL stns Business Nieuws 1395 kHz, had tremendous signals like a strong local tx. 10.25UT Further signals from the UK, BEL and HOL faded in, I noted at Karlsruhe especially the Talk-R.network on 1089kHz, Dutch Flevo on 1008kHz and Lopik on 1395kHz, while Michael had actually all high power outlets alongside with some local stations (1359, 1431, 1476, 1521kHz). At Wies- baden also Power 612 kHz from Kiel and DLF Neumuenster 1269 kHz from nor- thern Germany becamed audible. 10.29UT No big changes noted by yours truly, who his attention from now fully concentrated to the real event, as the light was meanwhile of a striking dim kind and the blue of the sky changed into a weird violet. At Wiesbaden the Spains appeared (especially on 1080 and 1602kHz), while the UK, BEL and HOL txs becamed weaker. The ERF/TWR Mainflingen tx on 1539 kHz, just 30 km away, started to suffer from fading, Spanish sig- nals appeared underneath. 10.34UT Fade-in at Wiesbaden for signals from Italia (1035, 1332, 1575kHz) France (1206 kHz) and the CZE (1233 and 1287 kHz). 10.39UT At Karlsruhe both the above mentioned signals as well as the CZE txs on 954, 1233 and 1287 kHz are audible. 10.42UT The stns from the west are widely disappeared, instead ones from the east comes in; I had no time to figure it out further as I was con- cerned to get my train, at Wiesbaden namely Thessaloniki-GRC on 1044 kHz and Domzale-SVN on 918 kHz was identified. 10.48UT At Wiesbaden the last signals from the east flashed through,slowly the usual daytime conditions come back.
