I, as so many others are puzzled/intrigued about the low modulation index on the Radio Rebelde transmission on the 60m band (5025 kHz), it's a crazy thing the technicians don't have a modulation index monitor, a way to just calculate that or a remote quality control station, or any other mean to find that issue. This night I was listening to WRMI Legends (5050 kHz from Okeechobee-FL- state-USA) and set the FFT scanning to 10 minutes to see the birdies of my neighbors AC inverters over time (I have a lot of them ??) and found some- thing interesting; a theory that makes sense to me and maybe is the sim- plest explanation (Occam razor's: the simplest solution maybe is the cor- rect one). Maybe the modulation index on the TXsite for Radio Rebelde is showing near 100% modulation index and for the technicians working there "all is ok", because the TX is broadcasting a 20 kHz wide signal vs the normal 10 kHz signal! All resumes to math: Power is the area below the curve, the wider the sig- nal the more power gets distributed over more "area" and then you have a lower useful audio power in the usual 10 kHz window; because there is wasted power distributed on the "unused" 5-10 Khz part away from the carrier. See the below pictures of my SDR screen on a 10 minute span, in normal "real time" the 20 kHz width of the signal is really not noticeable, but when you over sample it and integrate over time is clearly visible. Again this is just a theory, maybe they have no modulation index monitor and are doing the math from the carrier level power vs the audio power level into the modulator, and the 20 kHz wide signal spoils the metric. I hope you understand the idea and maybe makes sense to, you are free to consult, debate, elaborate or simplify it to tell the audience if you seems apropiarte and valid. A daily 15-minute broad- cast in Russian was aired. A 1953 reference guide lists the following station identification for the Russian-language broadcast: "This is Athens calling. Listen to the 'Voice of Greece'." Russian-language broadcasting ceased in early 1961 and resumed eleven years later, on November 28, 1972, following the commissioning of two new 100 kW shortwave transmitters. This coincided with the rule of the mili- tary junta in Greece-a government the USSR labeled a fascist regime-and Russian broadcasts from Greece were heavily jammed until the end of 1975. The 10-15 minute Russian segment, which included news and - occasionally - a review of the Greek press, aired as part of a broader Greek-language program aimed at the Greek diaspora in the European part of the USSR. Starting in 1980, a similar Russian-language segment was introduced within a 50-minute broadcast for the Greek diaspora in Soviet Central Asia (spe- cifically targeting Tashkent). Occasionally, instead of the standard Russian programming, the station aired bulletins seeking to locate Greek relatives within the USSR. Certain details stand out in memory. Judging by the voice, the Russian broadcasts between 1972 and 1976 were hosted by an elderly announcer - possibly someone who had worked for the Russian service prior to 1961. In May 1984, an event titled "Days of Athens in Moscow," organized by the Greek side, took place at one of the pavilions of the VDNKh exhibition center. Groups of visitors were first shown a documentary about Athens and the Greek capital's landmarks.It turned out that the film's narration was pro- vided by the very same "Voice of Greece" Russian-service announcer whose voice listeners heard on the air every day. As of 2001, the "Voice of Greece" ceased producing Russian-language pro- grams (as well as those in other languages); they were replaced by ... rebroadcasting programs from the domestic Greek multilingual radio station "Radio Filia" (1999 - June 11, 2013). The Russian-language broadcasts lasted 30 minutes and featured Greek music, while the Saturday programs were dedicated entirely to such music. The famous Yiorgos Dalaras was frequently among the artists played. One of his 1975 songs is very well known in Russia; its original title is "Ola Kala Ki Ola Orea" ("Everything is Good and Everything is Beautiful"). A Russian version with different lyrics - "Mne Mama Tikho Govorila" ("Mom Quietly Told Me") - was performed by Philipp Kirkorov, while the original is still performed today by Oleg Pogudin: 1) Kirkorov and Dalaras 2) Pogudin Russian-language and all other multilingual broadcasting on "Voice of Greece" ceased in mid-November 2021. In its final years, the service was available primarily online. Another multilingual municipal radio station in Athens, AIR - 104.4 FM (launched in 2004), was available via the "Athina984" station's website until the end of 2016 (or 2015, according to Wikipedia). Russian-language programs on the station were hosted by Russian announcers; in 2016, 15-minute news bulletins aired Monday through Friday, and a program titled "Half an Hour on Culture and Tourism" aired on Tuesdays. Despite repeated promises every year that the facilities will be renewed, funding has yet to materialize. The international service of Radio Mongolia has suffered a complete shut- down of its shortwave transmitter following a major breakdown. The situa- tion is no better on the domestic network. A live television debate program has just examined the state of radio broadcasting. For an hour,those responsible for the transmitters presented the condition of the facilities, their inability to obtain spare parts, and above all, power tubes. Some transmitters are now broadcasting more noise than sound. All the listeners present in the studio expressed their indignation and called for the preservation of the longwave service, which no other system can replace given the vast size of the country. The program was organized just as negotiations were beginning regarding future assistance from Japan's KDDI Fund for Information and Communica- tions. SHORTWAVE BROADCASTS. The international service began in 1964 and was transmitted using former Soviet transmitters from the Khonkhor transmitt- ing station, located about 25 km east of Ulaanbaatar, the capital of Mon- golia. In 2003, the transmitting center was re-equipped by NEC Made in Japan with funding from the Japanese government. A 500 kW transmitter, consisting of two 250 kW units, was intended for the Voice of Mongolia, while a 50 kW transmitter was allocated to the second program of Mongolian Radio on 7260 kHz. Due to the aging of the equipment, only one of the two 250 kW units was kept in service, while the other was used as a source of spare parts. The shortwave transmitters have now reached the end of their service lives. Nevertheless, let us hope to hear the Voice of Mongolia on 12015 and 12085 kHz, depending on the time of day. LONGWAVE BROADCASTS. The situation is no better here. Assistance has been requested from several countries, but without results. The transmitter at Ulgii (Oelgii) 209 kHz (48 57 25 N 89 58 13 E), dates from 1965 and now operates at only 30 kW. Those at Altai 227 kHz (46 19 11 N 96 15 07 E), and Dalanzadgad 209 kHz (43 r31 55 N 104 24 42 E), date from 1978 and operate at only 75 kW. The Khonkhor transmitter serving Ulaanbaatar, 164 kHz (47 48 01 N 107 11 04 E), dates from 1984. It is the only one that, when everything is working properly, operates at 500 kW. Only the Choibalsan transmitter on 209 kHz (48 00 21 N 114 26 08 E) is relatively recent. It is a TRAM 150 installed in 2012, currently operating at the reduced power of 75 kW. FM NETWORK. In recent years,Mongolia has installed FM transmitters as part of the Emergency Warning Broadcast System, funded by Japan's KDDI Fund. Reception was poor here at 06:00z and after 09:00z, with only about S-5 on my meter with moderate fading. Here is his reply: "The WLC Radio broadcast is still not up and running 100%. Allan Weiner is currently broadcasting with a backup transmitter, reduced power, and an Ampegon antenna pointed at 245 degrees. It's wonderful to hear that you were still able to pick up the signal, even if it was less than optimal. Thank you for letting me know about the e-QSL service bug. We'll resolve this as quickly as we are able." The 50 kW txs at WBCQ are probably permanently routed to existing anten- nas (rhombic ? ) so maybe they have hooked up another small tx to the Ampegon instead. Sorry for being late to the party but I wanted to report an update on the good reception (and recording) of 9330 kHz using the Uni Enschede-Twente Kiwi SDR receiver on 13 September from about 23:13UT for about an hour and five minutes when I ended my recording. A WLC program was in progress with a full and long ID starting at about 23:48z explicitly mentioning SW transmission and plugging its website. Another ID by WLC specifically mentioned WBCQ just before 24:00z. At 24:00 another full WBCQ ID: "from the land of freedom, this is WBCQ ... " Then the gardening program "White Mountain Garden Talk" started. Never heard that program before. The show was about building a home from scratch! In Weinheim kamen alljaehrlich am zweiten Septemberwochenende viele Funk- amateure zur UKW-Tagung zusammen, um sich ueber Neuigkeiten und Trends zu informieren. Neben dem geselligen Part am Clubhaus DL0WH mit Camping war vor allem das Vortragsprogramm mit der Haendlerausstellung und dem Floh- markt in der Dietrich-Bonhoeffer-Schule Weinheim Anziehungspunkt. In drei Vortragssaelen erfuhren die Tagungsbesucher viel Neues. "Wenn man von der 71. Tagung hoert, das ist nicht nur eine Veranstaltung, sondern eine Institution", stellte der Weinheimer Oberbuergermeister Michael Moeslang in seiner Begruessungsrede zur Tagung fest. "Die Geschichte der Tagung reicht bis in die 50er Jahre zurueck. Heute kommen noch immer Funkamateure nach Weinheim", so Moeslang. Dies sei be- merkenswert, da "in den 50er Jahren die Technikwelt noch ganz anders aussah." Sein Fazit: "Technik veraendert sich - die Neugierde bleibt". Beispiels- weise ging Pieter Tjerk de Boer, PA3FWM, der Frage nach, ob man einen per 3D-Druck gefertigten Traeger fuer gekoppelte Spulen entwerfen koenne. Hier fand neue Technik ebenso Eingang wie bei Andreas Spiess, HB9BLA, der sich mit Kuenstlicher Intelligenz und ihrem Nutzen besonders fuer die Entwicklung von Software befasste. Sein Fazit: Die Geschwindigkeit zum Ergebnis motiviere enorm. So ermoegliche die Anwendung von KI unerreichbare Projekte, der Mensch habe aber Wuensche und bleibe der Auftraggeber und Pruefer. Eyecatcher war indes der grosse EME-Portabelspiegel von Emil Bergmann, DL8JJ. Ueber seine EME-Erfahrungen berichtete er in einem eigenen Vortrag. Neben diesen gab es noch viele weitere Vortraege ueber den gesamten Tag. Eine Europapremiere konnten die Besucher am Icom-Stand erleben. Der Her- steller zeigte dem europaeischen Publikum erstmals seinen neuen IC-7110 Transceiver, der kuerzlich erst auf der 'Tokyo Hamfair' vorgestellt wurde. Kenwood stellte mit seinem TM-D750 ebenfalls neueste Technik vor und zeigte passend ein neues Bluetooth-Headset mit PTT-Funktion. Zum Ende des Samstags konnte man die Exponate des Selbstbauwettbewerbs be- staunen. Es lagen acht Exponate von sieben Einreichern vor, welche die Jury zu bewerten hatte, darunter eine latenzarme Inhouse-Remote-Bedienung fuer den IC-7300, eine LDMOS-Endstufe und eine selbstgebaute Squeeze- orsetaste.
