A BBC spokesperson says: "The Afghan authorities have suspended the trans- mission of the BBC from FM radio sites across Afghanistan. We are continu- ing to report fairly and independently in Pashto, Dari and English to our audiences in Afghanistan, on shortwave and medium wave radio, online and via satellite. Millions of people across Afghanistan rely on the BBC for accurate news and information and we are working with the authorities to address the situation". Background - The BBC reaches 5.4m people in Afghanistan, more than 20% of the adult population. BBC Media Centre, October 13th. Statement on BBC services in Afghanistan. (Mike-UK, BrDXC-UK io.group Oct 14) AFGHANISTAN BBC FM radio transmissions suspended in Afghanistan. Afghanistan's Taliban government has suspended the transmission of BBC broadcasts from FM radio sites across the country. A Taliban government spokesman said the BBC had been suspended because of "repeated violations" but did not elaborate. The BBC has been the only international news organisation to broadcast in- side Afghanistan since two US outlets were banned from operating in the country in 2022. "Millions of people across Afghanistan rely on the BBC for accurate news and information and we are working with the authorities to address the si- tuation," the broadcaster said in a statement. The BBC said it was "continuing to report fairly and independently in Pashto, Dari and English to our audiences in Afghanistan, on shortwave and medium wave radio, online and via satellite". It reaches more than 20% of the adult population in Afghanistan each week with news and other output, including educational programming aimed at girls who have been banned from secondary schools. Taliban Ministry of Information and Culture spokesman Khubaib Ghufran told local media: "Due to some repeated violations by the BBC media outlet, it is decided that for time being its activity is suspended across the coun- try". The Taliban government has a tight grip on media operating in the country. Music is not broadcast and women are less visible on screen than before the Taliban retook power in 2021. Women no longer appear on air together with men. People can still use some social media platforms, but a lack of electricity in large parts of the country, high costs and low literacy rates remain major barriers. The BBC's Afghan service has been operating since 1981. The Czech Republic is losing its tallest struc- tures. The two 355-meter-high transmission masts at Liblice, east of ca- pital Prague, are scheduled to be demolished using explosives between Monday and Friday. The exact time is being kept secret for safety reasons. (Roger Thauer-D, wor Oct 13) Today, Thursday, October 15, 2026, the two Liblice B masts were indeed de- molished by explosives ! According to recent Czech media reports, the two masts—each 355 meters tall—collapsed shortly after 11:15 a.m. CEST / 09.15 UTC on Oct 15. With this, what were previously the tallest structures in the Czech Republic have disappeared from the landscape. Method: controlled severing of the guy wires using specialized explosive charges Explosives: 4.5 kg in total Dismantling: The steel structures lying on the ground are expected to be disassembled and removed by November. The Semtex Razor explosive charge features a distinctive inverted "V" pro- file and consists of Semtex explosive material layered over a copper li- ner. Upon detonation, the molten copper is focused into a cutting jet that severs a steel cable in a few thousandths of a second. Developed by the company Explosia, based in Pardubice, following years of research, these charges have been available on the Czech market for a decade. Explosive cutting is among the most technically demanding methods of demo- lition, yet it is also the fastest and safest. It eliminates the need for high-risk work at heights—such as the manual, step-by-step dismantling of a structure—which, in the past, was the most frequent cause of accidents. Following the removal of the Liblice masts, the Krasov television and radio transmitter in the Plzen region — standing 347.5 meters tall — be- came the tallest structure in the Czech Republic. At approximately 11:15 L.T. CEST, following the detonation of explosive charges, the Liblice masts collapsed into a field in the direction of Kolin. Both structures were demolished simultaneously because their guy wires crossed one another. According to Vaclav Pazout, a property manage- ment specialist at CRA, this approach was intended to prevent the fall of one mast from affecting the other. The charges severed four guy wires on the side of each mast facing Prague, while the highest cables were left intact to ensure the structures would break apart during the fall. Due to the demolition, the police temporarily halted traffic on the I/12 road between Prague and Kolin. The timestamp selected (?t=2666, i.e., minute 44:26) jumps directly to the footage of the event: Demolition of the pair of Liblice transmitter masts at Liblice, 49min10s (Roger Thauer-D, via wwdxc BC-DX TopNews Oct 13 - 15) CZECH REPUBLIC On 15 October 2026, the two 355-m-high radio towers in Liblice, Central Bohemia, were taken down by cutting the wires of the masts. Built in 1976, the towers, which were 120 metres apart, had been the tallest structures in the CSSR/CR country. In 2021, Czech Radio stopped using the facility. Operator Ceske Radiokomunikace has since been unable to find another permanent user for them. There was a shortlived use by 'Country Radio' from 2023 to 2025, but after that the site was dormant again. For safety reasons, Ceske Radiokomunikace did not publicly announce the date of the demolition in advance, but hundreds of people watched the event. Now a 347-m-mast in Krasov near Plzen is the tallest structure of the Czech Republic. (Uwe Volk-D/THA, via wwdxc BC-DX TopNews Oct 13 - 14) INDONESIA During my stay in Tha Mai Thailand in June/July 2026 - I checked 3325 & 4755 kHz frequencies almost daily around 14.00 UTC. 3325 kHz: no signal audible or visible, seems inactive now. I remember to see an open carrier over hours/days in 2025 year. Maybe feeding problems Jakarta - Cimanggis >> Makassar were the reason for the re-location of the tx men- tioned by Kai Ludwig-D. 4755 kHz: In June/July 26 moderate signal noted in Tha Mai Thailand, but bad audio. It seems to me that two VoINS tx are in // on 4755 kHz, both with 50+Hertz frequency offsets. My expectation is that the bad audio is caused by interfering from both tx interfering each other. 9690 kHz: If two tx are still in operation on 4755 kHz, the tx on 9690 kHz must be no. #3. (Uwe Volk-D, partly log from Tha Mai-THA, wor Oct 14) A while ago 4755 kHz had been described as a transmitter moved from Makas- sar to Cimanggis, without mentioning further details. 3325 kHz is the original installation, just with 'Voice of Indonesia' as programme audio now. So it should be such a transmitter I understand that not only the curtain antennas of the Cimanggis station have been removed, also the transmitter buildings with everything they contained (including two VEB Funkwerk Koepenick-former_Made in GDR trans- mitters, a model of which, as far as I know, only one further piece exist- ed, installed at Leipzig Wiederau as "LPZ 5", shut down in 1993 year). So of course no "full power"anymore. I think it's rather misleading to use such language for, as described, the 1000 watts toy they now run on 9690 kHz. By the way, I would not be surprised if that 21610 kHz signal from Brazil turns out to be such a toy as well, provided it's really not some spurious emission of the 980 kHz transmitter. Btw_2, I recently read that they had originally a pair of two 300 kW transmitters that could be run as a 600 kW block. The F_Book group 'Pendengar Setia AM/MW & SW di Indonesia' says it has the answers. This is a translated compilation of their investigations. ... 9690 kHz. Umum No. 2 RT.1/RW.1, Cisalak, Kec. Sukmajaya, Depok. The Return of "Old Friends" from Guam and Israel. September marked the unwelcome return of two notorious utility stations operating directly inside our exclusive allocations. A naval STANAG 4481 (FSK) transmission traced to the island of Guam was active for several days, transmitting right at the lower segment of the 20-meter band. On the other hand, the naval station 4ZX, from Haifa - Israel, also trans- mitted CW messages for several days. The UKR/RUS "War of Words" & North African Fisheries {MRC / MM}. Russian/Ukrainian Conflict: The daily "war of words" between unidentified operators from Russia and Ukraine showed no signs of slowing down. Sta- tions on both 40m and 20m engaged in persistent mutual interference, uti- lizing long SSB transmissions to broadcast insults, political speeches and loops of prerecorded audio of political and religious programs from else- where in the spectrum. Maritime Traffic: At various points throughout the month, our monitoring stations intercepted several active SSB voice networks operated by fisheries located primarily around the coast of North Africa, according to language analysis and the nature of exchanges, often including coordinates at sea. Regional Propagation Highlights: Brazil on 10 Meters. A short window of improved propagation conditions on the higher bands allowed monitors to assess the unfortunate state of the 10-meter band in various points of the world. On peak days, the band was heavily congested with illicit, non-amateur commercial traffic, namely long haul cargo transport and trucking activities in Brazil, operating in AM mode. Monitoring this band also revealed the presence of OTHR radar and taxi dispatching activities in FM from Eastern Europe. The 28 MHz band is also home to unwelcome sea based GPS Buoys, namely Enagal and Wavecom models. Also present are international fisheries operating somewhere in the South Atlantic, with FM mode transmissions. Mystery BPSK Signal spotlight. The Public Electronic Media Council of Latvia (SEPLP) has drafted amend- ments that would preserve the historic names "Latvijas Radio" and "Latvijas Televizija" within the brand structure of the unified public media entity, LSM. The document has been added to the agenda for the Oc- tober 14 meeting of the Saeima (Parliament) Commission on Human Rights and Public Affairs. The amendments aim to establish the names "Latvijas Radio" and "Latvijas Televizija" at the legislative level. This concerns the names themselves, rather than the retention of previous logos, typefaces, or other visual design elements. These historic names are intended to remain part of the LSM identity, including in the branding of linear broadcast services. The changes will apply to the designations of television channels LTV1 and LTV7, as well as the radio stations Latvijas Radio 1, Latvijas Radio 2, Latvijas Radio 3 Klasika, and Latvijas Radio 5. Hundreds of letters sent to Radio Luxembourg by listeners in the former East Germany confiscated by the Stasi have been recovered, with a major commemorative project planned for April 2027. Radio has long transcended borders and offered people a measure of freedom of expression. In a unique rediscovery, historical research has brought to light around 600 letters, postcards, and envelopes sent more than 40 years ago by residents of the former German Democratic Republic (GDR) to Radio Luxembourg that never reached their destination. These items were systematically intercepted and confiscated by officials from the GDR's infamous State Security Service, known as the Stasi. For many people living in the GDR, especially in the so-called 'Valley of the Clueless' near Dresden in today's Saxony, where West German television reception was virtually impossible, Radio Luxembourg provided a rare win- dow to the outside world. Popular presenters like Camillo Felgen and Frank Elstner brought a sense of freedom, lightness, and individuality to the often oppressive everyday life in East Germany through their broadcasts. The documents, uncovered thanks to the research of eyewitness Michael Teupel, provide a glimpse, through the voices of ordinary people, of how much this contact with the West meant to GDR citizens. The confiscated letters are entirely apolitical: listeners requested their favourite songs, voted in music charts, asked for autographs from their idols, or just thanked the station for its programming. Curator Michael Teupel, who is analysing the collection for an upcoming public event, ex- plains that these letters make a piece of everyday GDR history tangible again, as behind every letter there is a person who lived in a society where media was tightly controlled. He adds that these postcards symbolise a very human wish: to take part in another world and to have one's own voice heard. The historical importance of the collection is underscored by the real dangers of contact with Western radio in the GDR. One documented case from Lutherstadt Eisleben in modern Saxony-Anhalt shows that even a mere music request could lead to interrogation by the Stasi, exclusion from school exams, or even imprisonment. When Radio Luxembourg became aware of such arrests at the time, presenter Frank Elstner advised not to broad- cast the names of East German listeners on air to protect them. Now, more than four decades later, these intercepted voices are finally making their way to their intended destination at RTL Luxembourg. A com- memorative event titled "Forbidden Waves - Radio Luxembourg in the GDR" is planned for 13 April 2027 at the Luxembourg City Library. In collaboration with Dr. Dominique Santana, curator of the exhibition 'Ghosts of the Villa', Michael Teupel will present a selection of the re- cently recovered letters to the public. 15 photos of the letters or addressed envelopes in the article, one says they were listening on 6090 kHz shortwave. From Radio World: (via Richard Langley-NB-USA, wor Oct 15) RUSSIA Have you ever wondered how radio frequencies in the FM band are allocated? For instance, in the Moscow region, the frequency spacing is 4 MHz, while in Volgograd, it ranges from 4-5 MHz or even more. The reason for these differences lies in the nature of how radio waves propagate. Various factors can cause a radio station's broadcast range to expand. This creates a risk of signals from two—or even three—stations overlapping on the same frequency; as a result, one broadcast drowns out the other, making it impossible to listen to either. To prevent such overlaps, frequencies are assigned to broadcasters accord- ing to strict rules. A clear pattern has been established: when broadcast- ing hubs are located 125-135 km apart, frequencies are allocated with a 3 MHz spacing—sufficient to avoid interference. Ukrainian {origin} drones attacked the data centers. As a result of these attacks, many Yandex services—including email — became temporarily unavailable or experienced operational disruptions. This has complicated work on the bulletin, as the bulletin is closely integrated with Yandex services. As of October 10, 2026, Yandex has updated the user agreement for its ser- vices to include a clause regarding exemption from liability in the event of *force majeure*—specifically including drone attacks. The agreement de- fines such events as "extraordinary and unavoidable circumstances that arise independently of the parties' will, are beyond their reasonable con- trol, and render the proper fulfillment of contractual obligations impos- sible." (via Anatoly Klepov-RUS, RUSdx #1416 via wwdxc BC-DX TopNews Oct 18) Yandex has issued an important statement to the Russian public. Due to the current disruptions in Yandex services, there is an increased risk that users could be targeted by phishing campaigns or other fraudu- lent activities, Yandex Cloud has warned. "Common pretexts used by scammers include: 'data corrupted—log in to re- store', 'account blocked due to a system failure', 'compensation for down- time — provide your account details', or 'urgent migration—open the at- tachment'", the company stated. Yandex reiterated that it never requests passwords, bank account details, or remote access to user accounts via email. To protect themselves from scammers, users should carefully check the sender's email domain, avoid clicking on suspicious links or opening attachments, and exercise caution regarding messages that demand immediate action. If a user has already en- tered their information on a dubious website, they should take the fol- lowing steps: change their password, terminate all active sessions, check email forwarding settings, and contact customer support. Over the course of four days, three Yandex data centers—located in Sasovo, Kaluga, and Vladimir—experienced disruptions. The issues were caused by attacks from Ukrainian unmanned aerial vehicles (drones). The outages affected a number of Yandex services, including its search engine, the voice assistant Alice, Yandex Go, Yandex Pay, Yandex Mail, Yandex Telemost, and others. Furthermore, third-party companies — such as Dodo Pizza and Lamoda — as well as Yandex Cloud clients, also encountered problems. The competition between Android and iOS no longer defines the smartphone market. Today, Russian users choose a phone not based on its operating system, but rather on the availability of apps, local payment options, de- vice ecosystem integration, and built-in AI. This was explained to by the press office of the app store RuStore. Following the removal of certain banking apps from the App Store and re- strictions on specific payment services, the choice of a smartphone is increasingly determined not by the brand, but by how reliably the user's essential local services function on the device. Android offers more fle- xible software distribution options, with RuStore — which provides access to apps including those from Russian banks — serving as an additional com- ponent of this model. This shifts the very logic of the market, explained Marson Li, head of mo- bile business development (for Eastern Europe, the Middle East, North Africa, and Russia) at the Chinese firm Chizicheng Technology. Previously, an ecosystem would retain users through convenience and habit. Now,in some countries, a highly closed model can become a limitation if certain in-de- mand services are rendered inaccessible. All new cars would have to be fitted with a radio under a draft law ap- proved by the French Senate amid concern that drivers would be lost if the internet crashed during a catastrophe. The bill, which has government backing, comes after an 18 per cent fall in radio audiences over the past decade. Radio stations are concerned about a tendency among car manufacturers to offer radios as an optional fitting or sometimes omit them altogether. The Citroen e-C3 has a smartphone station but no radio, for example, and a radio is optional in the Dacia Spring. Tesla has removed FM, AM and DAB radios from entry-level versions of its Model3. Catherine Pegard, the cul- ture minister, who supports the bill, said it was important for people to be able to listen to radios "in times of crisis". In their statement, radio stations said:"Broadcast radio is the only free, resilient and anonymous media in situations of major crisis." It said that during an electricity shutdown in Spain last year and the wildfires in southwest France this summer, the internet went down and radios were neces- sary to provide information to the public. A total of 38.4 million people listen to the radio every day on average in France, according to Mediametrie, an audience measurement firm. They listen for 17.25 hours a week on average. Three quarters of those who listen to a radio do so in their vehicles. Over the past decade, traditional terrestrial AM and FM radio has undergone a steady erosion in both audience share and physical infrastructure, as streaming services, podcasts, and on-demand digital platforms have reshaped how Americans consume audio. Industry tracking shows the shift is neither sudden nor complete, yet the long-term trajectory points to a medium that is gradually ceding ground in daily listening time, core listener behavior, and station counts. Edison Research's Share of Ear studies, which measure time spent across all audio sources, indicate that AM/FM radio's portion of total daily audio time has settled in the low-to-mid 30 percent range in recent peri- ods, including figures around 33 to 34% in 2025 data covering adults 18 and older. This marks a substantial retreat from earlier eras when over-the-air radio held a clear majority of audio consumption. Digital alternatives now col- lectively account for the larger share of listening, with streaming music, YouTube, podcasts, and satellite options filling the gap. Even so, radio retains a dominant position within the narrower category of ad-supported audio, where it continues to capture roughly 63 to 64% of time spent, far outpacing individual streaming platforms. In-car listening remains a rela- tive stronghold, with AM/FM accounting for more than half of total in- vehicle audio time and well over 80 percent of ad-supported listening in vehicles among adults, though connected dashboards and smartphone integra- tion continue to introduce alternatives. The decline is especially evident among radio's most loyal listeners. Jacobs Media's long-running Techsurvey, which draws responses from highly engaged fans of commercial stations, documents a clear migration away from traditional receivers. In the mid-2010s, roughly three-quarters of these core listeners reported consuming their favorite stations primarily via terrestrial AM/FM. By the mid-2020s that figure had fallen by about 18% points. More recent survey results show the gap between broadcast and digital con- sumption of the same stations narrowing further, with traditional over- the-air methods accounting for just over half of listening time among these dedicated fans and digital platforms approaching parity. The audien- ce itself is aging, with average respondents well into their late 50s and a rising share over age 65, while younger cohorts already split their time more evenly or favor digital options. Even among those who still tune into AM/FM content, a portion of the ex- perience has moved off traditional hardware. Streamed versions of broad- cast stations now represent roughly 12 to 14% of all time spent with radio sources in recent measurements, leaving traditional over-the-air receivers with approximately 86 to 88% of radio listening. The migration is more pro- nounced outside the car, particularly at home and in other locations where smartphones, smart speakers, and computers make digital access convenient. These audience trends have translated into measurable pressure on station infrastructure. Federal Communications Commission licensing data show that the number of licensed AM stations declined by about 7 percent over a ten- year span ending in late 2025, dropping to roughly 4,340 stations, with further modest losses continuing into 2026. Commercial FM stations experienced a smaller but steady contraction of about 2% over the same decade, falling to just under 6,600. Stations have gone dark, surrendered licenses, or been consolidated under larger owner- ship groups facing reduced advertising revenue and higher operating costs. In contrast, noncommercial educational FM stations expanded significantly during the same period, driven in part by application windows and growth in religious and community broadcasting, while low-power FM outlets also saw gains. The cumulative effect is a local radio landscape that remains widely avai- lable yet faces structural challenges. Communities that once relied on nearby stations for hyper-local news, weather, traffic, sports, and emer- gency alerts now encounter fewer full-power commercial outlets in some markets, even as digital alternatives offer greater choice and personali- zation. Advertising dollars have followed listeners toward platforms that allow more precise targeting, further squeezing the economics of traditio- nal broadcasting. While radio continues to reach large daily audiences — particularly in ve- hicles — and retains advantages in free access and local relevance, the decade-long pattern of declining share among core listeners, gradual sta- tion losses, and the shift toward digital consumption indicates an industry in the midst of a slow, ongoing contraction rather than a sudden collapse. WBCQ is a commercial shortwave radio station in Maine, USA. The station is selling its 500 kiloWatt Continental transmitter, its 360-degree rota- table antenna, a 2-megawatt generator, 3000 square foot transmitter and studio building, and 100 acres of land near Monticello, Maine state, all for US$2 million. The price includes these assets, but if the buyer would like to operate the station in this location, he/she would have to obtain a new license from the U.S. Federal Communications Commission. Or the buyer could take the equipment and move it to another location. WBCQ will continue to ope- rate an adjacent lower-power shortwave facility under its license, and that portion of the station is not for sale. Inquiries may be made to Mr. Allan Weiner at (via BrDXC-UK iogr bcnews 12 Oct) USA 9330 kHz on Oct 14 circa 15.00 UT, still no signal from WBCQ bcast center. Received from Allan Weiner at 13.52 UT on Oct 14: "Hi Glenn, Hope you are well. Just to clarify: WBCQ is selling our Superstation 500 kW facility as it is surplus to our needs due to the ending of Worlds Last Chance Ministry's contract. We are NOT, I repeat, NOT selling WBCQ radio. Just the Superstation transmitting station which is a separate facility to the main WBCQ complex. Any potential buyer must secure their own license. We are hoping the VOA or other shortwave broadcaster will purchase the facility as it is a true world asset and needs to be preserved for future generations. WBCQ continues to operate its main transmitters on 7490, 6160, 5130, 3265 kHz, and will move 9330 kHz to one of our other transmitters. So the free speech radio WBCQ will continue forever !!
