Been trying to hear this one decently for a few years, ever since I started chasing individual 'remote studios' for large (usually religious) organizations. This one is coming through daily at 1510-1540 UT and seems to improve, being best toward end. Urdu xmsn start- ing and ending with TWR IS. Preaching, somber religious mx with subcon- tinental flavor. What is most interesting is that FEBA Pakistan is another one of those entities that is nearly a free-standing radio station in its own right, other than renting xmtr time. They have their own pgms, website, etc. (Ralph Perry, Wheaton-IL-USA, Naswa Electronic Flashsheet #1030 Jan 9) 12075 kHz TWR India via Yerevan Gavar, Jan 7; {13.15-14.15 UT} usual beautiful signal with Kurukh lang service at 1320 UT, entrancing subcon- tinental mx and YL ancr. 12075 kHz TWR India via Yerevan Gavar, Jan 9; nice strong signal but light echo at 1350 UT with OM preaching in Kurukh pgm. Somewhat better than only other sigs on band, BBC 17830 kHz Ascension, 17780 kHz Woofferton-UK. VOA site sometimes referred to as Selebi-Phikwe, othertimes as Moepeng Hill. WRTH uses both, but where is this, really? East central Botswana, near the Zimbabwe border; close to which city? 100 km SSE of Francistown, which used to be a radio site. It's the second-largest city, 100K after capital Gaborone. Apparently has not been de-Anglicized in nomenclature. Wikipedia: "The present town was founded in 1897 as a settlement near the Monarch mine and named after Daniel Francis, an English prospector from Liverpool who acquired prospecting licences in the region in 1869." Selebi-Phikwe is half the size of F-town, and known for nickel mining. Moepeng Hill is known as MW transmitter site, both for VOA 600 kW on 909 kHz along with the SW; and Radio Botswana, 100 kW on 621 kHz. M.H. appears to be a hill rather than a populated place, about 25 km west of Selebi-Phikwe, so closer to due south from Francistown. A medium-sized African country, Botswana is 85.79% the area of Texas, but sparsely populated. (Glenn Hauser-OK-USA, hcdx and wor Jan 12) The one and only village nearby, Selebi-Phikwe some 18 - 20 kilometers away of US AGM relay broadcast center area. Prague (dpa, Jan 1) - Radio reception on medium wave (MW) and long wave (LW) has been history in many parts of Europe for years. Now in the Czech Republic at least the public broadcaster will stop trans- mitting on MW and LW as the new year starts on Saturday. The powerful transmitters on the frequencies LW 270, MW 639 and 954 kilo- hertz could also be received in large parts of Germany. The reason given for the move was the widespread availability of terrestrial digital radio DAB+ and the high costs of broadcasting. Those still listening using medium waves were to be persuaded to switch with a campaign. The radio station Cesky Rozhlas set up a telephone hot- line to answer questions. It was not known at first whether the trans- mitters would be retained or used for other purposes. The antenna of the medium-wave transmitter Liblice B east of Prague is considered the highest structure in the Czech Republic, with a height of 355 metres. Impuls, the most-listened to private radio station, wants to remain faith- ful to medium wave for the time being. It broadcasts its second programme, with pop and country music, on analogue transmission. A special page of Cesky rozhlas about the closure of broadcasting on DV and SV in the Czech Republic and the transition to digital radio DAB+. That's a bit of a stretch IMHO. ;-) I recorded the broadcast using the University Enschede Twente SDR receiver as I have been doing every day lately (and most days lately they don't even bother to turn on the trans- mitter) and there was barely any modulation until about 21:25 UT and then the typical distorted audio. Bruce: Did you use any special adjustments to your receiver to improve intelligibility? Sideband selection, filtering, etc.? (Richard Langley-NB-CAN, wor Jan 12) Nothing special - but - "easy listenable" in this case meant that I could hear something besides the occasional fragment of a word, LOL! Actually after 2126.5 UT, the modulation was "fully present" until I tuned out at 22.21 UT which was the first time I had heard that for the 21.15 UT broad- cast - maybe that's a better description than "easily listenable". The speech was basically unintelligible (I could tell it was a woman and that was about it) and the music was just good enough for Shazam to ID songs. DX India Exclusive: Regret to inform that All India Radio - New Delhi B 666 kHz (100 kW) is already discontinued this week. It was called Rajadhani (ie Capital) Channel. AIR New Delhi continues to broadcast on two other MW channels in AM & DRM mode and three FM Channels on the Home Service. (Jose Jacob-IND VU2JOS, DXindia via wwdxc BC-DX TopNews Jan 5) INDIA Members, There was a prediction from Jose Jacob-IND at the end of last year that stations on MW will close. He has reported today on the DX-India part of Groups.io that two stations have closed. Thank you Jose. Hyderabad is no longer broadcasting on 1377 kHz. Chennai is no longer broadcasting on 1017 kHz. Some will be pleased that at last Madras is referred to in the Inactive or Closed spreadsheet. I will have plenty of scope to add more historical place-names to reflect big modernisation by India of the names of their cities. We will see how many more closure notifications follow. I wonder (and it has not yet happened) if closure of the "analog" part of a mast which also carries DRM will result in the digital feed being kept alive? Sunlite is broadcasting at this stage with only 75 watts carrier power using a borrowed transmitter manufactured in Greece. As you have noticed; the frequency is 5955 kHz. The signal is emanating from the Dutch village of Overslag near the Belgian town of Zelzate (southwest Netherlands). The tower is 100 metres high but the inverted V-antenna has been mounted on a height of 17 meters and consists of a Teflon 1:1 RF choke. It's situated right at the border between Belgium and the Netherlands but the transmitter site is completely within the Netherlands. Sunlite on 5955 kHz has been licensed by the Telecommunication Agency of the Netherlands. At this stage Sunlite's on the air with only a power of 75 watts. Currently a new modern transmitter is almost ready to be put in place. Our engineer Johnny Tax hopes to be able to install the new rig coming Friday. Right before Christmas Sunlite's transmitter power will then increase to a carrier signal of 500 watts (2 kilowatts peak envelope power or PEP). Sunlite is part of RadioCorp; a Dutch media company based in Naarden in the Netherlands. The radio station is on the air in the Netherlands on DAB+, online, IPTV and cable as well as shortwave and is aimed at a Dutch domestic audience. The format is soft adult contemporary music and at the top of the hour each hour there's the news from the Dutch national press agency ANP. Other radio stations that belong to RadioCorp are the Dutch domestic FM/DAB+ stations 100% NL and SLAM ! and Besides shortwave you can also listen to Sunlite online via or via the TuneIn Radio-app on your smartphone or other device. (Via Sunlite Radio as attachment to QSL response. Herbert Visser. Sunlite Radio. J Durham. NZ DX Times Jan magazine direct, Jan 5) Next up is my neighbour, Bryan Clark from Tern Point, Mangawhai. I had an early Christmas present with a logging and a QSL for new Dutch shortwave broadcaster Sunlite Radio 5955 with just 75 watts transmitter power! Sunlite was reported on 13 December and was noted with improved signals on subsequent nights, best between 0700 and 0800 UTC. They plan to increase power to 400 watts around Christmas so it should then be an easier catch "down under". The FM season is underway with openings to Otago and Australia. Pacific openings are disappointing so far, but a Fijian mystery on 88.1 awaits identification. Good DX to all in 2022 ! NETHERLANDS Neue Kurzwellenstation Sunlite. Wir wissen, was Sie brauchen. "Airmen" have created their own closed social network with thematic "rooms". TJ tells how it was - through the stories of the witnesses of the phenomenon. In the wake of the popularity of the new voice social network clubhouse on the Internet, they remembered its Soviet prototype - "telephone broadcast". In the early 1980s, residents of Leningrad acci- dentally discovered a vulnerability in automatic telephone exchanges that allowed them to use anonymous "voice conferences" for about 20 years. Just like in the clubhouse, you could participate in group discussions or just listen to other people's conversations. For many residents, "ether" has become a place of communication, finding friends and a partner for one night. "Airmen" invented nicknames for each other, gathered in large com- panies and even attracted the attention of television and the Komsomol. It reminded Nick that he "had an old newspaper picture showing the control desk of Ottringham, the caption reading: 'This was the control room of the BBC's wartime transmitting station in Ottringham. Four 200 kW transmitters remotely controlled from this desk could be used separately or as a single 800 kW unit'. The photograph was taken from a Hull Daily Mail nostalgia paper, Flashback, published every month or so. The caption gave no further details, but a trawl through the excellent document the 'Development of the BBC AM Transmitter Network' by Clive McCarthy gives more details of Ottringham's operation.
