I recorded the full four hours using my Belka-DX receiver here in NewBrunswick-CAN with a Tecsun AN-03L 7-metre wire antenna strung to a nearby tree. The re- ceiver was operated in pseudo-synchronous (AM2) mode with 50 Hz - 2.7 kHz bandwidth. I have listened now to the full four hours and did not notice significant interference or distortion considering, after all, that it was a SW broad- cast. And the signal had a good consistent strength throughout with a brief period of silence when the switch was made to higher power perhaps using a different transmitter. Yes, the audio was not perfect and perhaps a little bassy at times (not consistently and even so, one could always adjust the tone/filter/EQ con- trol to one's liking) and a hardly audible underlying drone but not bad for such old recordings or was it the transmitter? And there was some new material such as the new year's greetings in French, Spanish, and English. The music was quite eclectic and not all dance music. There were some classical or semi-classical pieces such as "The Blue Danube" and "Espana Cani" and songs by Elvis, Little Richard, Perry Como, the Moody Blues, and so on. Perhaps reception was better on the east coast of North America compared to Europe. I found the broadcast quite enjoyable despite what others have said about it. So there. ;-) (Richard Langley-NB-CAN, wor Jan 04) AUSTRALIA JSWC New Year Special on Reach Beyond Australia Kununurra Japanese Service of Reach Beyond Australia (HCJB-Japanese) will broad- cast special New Year program by Japan Shortwave Club(JSWC) on January 5 and 6. At Quivican: On 6 Jan local evening, RHC Quivican was noted 2300 Z on 6000 kHz, no useful modulation, and RHC Portuguese on 15230 kHz. 6000 kHz pulled the plug just before 0000Z and there was no ENG program aired after. On 7 Jan local evening, CRI Quivican 5990 and 13650 kHz were up simul- taneously, and RHC Spanish was on 15230 kHz during the 23 Z block, with very low modulation; 6000 kHz was completely missing. After 0000Z, 5990 kHz and 15230 kHz remained on, but still no 6000 kHz. So, 6000 kHz evening English has been missing at least couple of days now. I haven't checked morning 6000/15230 kHz in a few days, though they were both reliably active as of a few days ago. At Bauta: 15140 kHz disappeared about 3 weeks ago; it was the "squealer" tx and was used at times on 11760 or 11670 kHz also. Since then 11760 kHz has been the prime daytime freq with the "good 25 mband" tx that was previously shared with the HM01 spook. HM01 remains unheard since October. RHC was active on 11760 kHz most of the afternoon 7 Jan. I wasn't around to check for the Radio Havano Cubo Esperanto Sunday program at 1600 Z. It was active with Arabic at 1800 Z, HAT 1830 Z, 19-20 Z unmonitored, English 2000 Z, French 2100 Z, then it pulled the plug abruptly at 2123ish. 11760 kHz came back around 2235 UT with Spanish, with 9710 kHz also found already up at that time. 9710 kHz then dropped off around 2353Z, while 11760 kHz continued, and is still on at 0105 Z. Some days lately 11760 kHz has been pulling the plug, seemingly randomly, early afternoon, leaving no RHC anywhere until the 2200 Z Spanish block. Or, they may keep it active all afternoon instead. 9710 and 11760kHz had been showing up consistently for the morning Spanish block as of a few days ago. For the national stations, 5025 kHz Bauta remains off, 4765 kHz remains on as of 6 Jan. 4765 kHz was "professionally DFd" to Bauta, but doesn't seem to correlate with any major full site outages at Bauta when they occasio- nally happen; the tx sites are relatively close together for DF purposes, so it may indeed be at the usually-listed Bejucal. So, the general trend of deterioration continues. Will the CHICOMs or Putkin fly in some techs and fix everything, or will RadioCuba finally run RHC SW to complete and permanent failure? Maerz in Leipzig. Costa Konstantinidis from Cyprus was the first to report the news via a F_B group about Israel returning of Jan 1st to the MW frequency of 1287 kHz. 1287 kHz Medium wave Israel Galei Tzahal back on the air. (73. Costa Constantinides, Limassol-Cyprus. wor Jan 01) I've just confirmed here (Steve Whitt-UK, Medium Wave News Editor; York, England, UK Jan 01) I was possibly the second person to hear it on 2050z. Here is my report from my web page: 1287 kHz Galei Zahal ISR ~2050z in the clear with -75dbmin Canaries. In TWR Cyprus the signal is local -45dbm (link to the blog). The station was also heard on Jan 2 at around 05xx with a signal of -45dB on 1287 kHz. Mwlist.org listed 945 kHz with 100 kW while 1287 kHz was listed with 50kW. IN TWR CYP remoted KIWI SDR the signal was the same -45dbm on Jan 2 on 05z in both frequencies. 1287 kHz has sharper sound. Later, around 10z, the signal strength decreased to -60 dbm. As of today, Jan 3, the signal strength is -70 dbm on 1318z in both frequencies. Nearly same on levels at 1447 UT. (Zacharias Liangas, Thessaloniki-GRC, hcdx 03) What no one makes clear is that Galei Tzahal is the Israeli Defence Forces station. It gave up MW years ago for an FM-only? network. See WRTH 2005 year which still listed it on 1287 kHz et al. This will be news to KVOH / Voice of Hope which took over the frequency (and same transmitter?) and today is all about it on homepage: Unless someone misunderstood ID? "Galilee Tzahal"? But this is what mwlist now shows: ISR Galei Tzahal 24hrs ar She'ar Yashuv * 50 ex Voice of Hope Middle East, off since the beginning of 2020 year // 945 kHz live audiolive audio send email ... "ar" must mean Arabic, not Hebrew. (Glenn Hauser-OK-USA, wor Jan 02) Re: Galei Tzahal resumes MW 1287 kHz in Israel. Communications Ministry funds network reception for bomb shelters (danielzr123, wor Jan 09) The 1287 kHz frequency was selected for VOH because it allowed high power operation consistent with the ITU regulations. It is assigned to and was previously used by the IDF, and it seems likely that this present use is from the VOH facility, which is in northern Israel, triplexed with 882 and 1458 kHz at a site owned/operated by the Israeli communications facility company Bezeq. (Shalom, Benjamin Dawson-OR/WA-USA, Hatfield-Dawson Consulting Engineers) re: This will be news to KVOH/Voice of Hope which took over the frequency (and same transmitter? at She ar-Yeshuv (Northern); and today is all about it on homepage: (Glenn Hauser-OK-USA, wor Jan 05) ISRAEL Galei Zahal army radio on MW 945 and 1287 kHz. Tonight as reported both 945 and 1287 kHz broadcast Galei Zahal, the programme as streamed on their website. 1287 kHz is still distorted and very shrill. Enclosed a recording from Cyprus at 18:42 CET, ten seconds of 945 kHz followed by 1287 kHz, with no other change than the frequency switch in between. 945 kHz could be the Yavne station, its mediumwave infrastructure could be expected to be still intact after four years (end of use by Kan) as well. What's weird is the frequency. Former transmissions were on 531, 657 and 1080 kHz, never on 945 kHz. This was instead one of the fre- quencies used by Voice of Hope in South Lebanon until its operations there ceased in 2000. 1287 kHz is presumably the transmitter used by Voice of Hope from 2017 to 2019, I understand that the former Galei Zahal facility for this fre- quency no longer exists. 945 kHz is presumably Yavne where a transmitter operated on that frequency (until 2000 used by Voice of Hope from South Lebanon) for some time until Galei Zahal abandoned mediumwave in the last decade. Now it could be speculated if a transmitter, at Yavne or elsewhere, has been switched to 945 kHz to send a message to the north, but I would con- sider this as really far-fetched - who still remembers the South Lebanon incarnation of Voice of Hope and its exact mediumwave frequency after almost a quarter of a century? Enclosed what that 1287 kHz Isreal signal, as heard with strong signal on the TWR Cyprus monitoring rig, carried at midnight (CET). I don't dare any comment on what it is, especially with this bad distortion, beyond that it sounds like Arabic ... (Kai Ludwig-D, wor Jan 02) Re: Galei Tzahal resumes MW 1287 kHz in Israel The original 1287 kHz transmitter somewhere around Tel Aviv {ISR Ramlah site on 1287 kHz 60 kW; approx. veiled Google Earth poor re- solution location at 31 53 03.50 N 34 50 55.48 E wb.} has been closed around 2005. Keeping it was probably as impossible as in the case of the 1200kW on 738 kHz that used to carry Arabic programming of Kol Israel. But this is a question for those with more detailled archives. Replacement for the former facility was a transmission from the Yavne sta- tion (the one that was until 2013 active also on shortwave). Interestingly they did not use 1287 kHz again but now 945 kHz, the mediumwave frequency used by Voice of Hope from southern Lebanon (or Southern Lebanon or South Lebanon or Free Lebanon or whatever) until 2000 year. Would be interesting to hear how this worked in regard to ITU regulations - I would assume that this region was until 2000 considered as under Israelian sovereignty, although presumably those in Geneve would never confirm such an approach. The use of 1287 kHz by Voice of Hope, started in 2017, ceased at yearend 2019 or very early in 2020. I suspect they would, when being asked about it, tell that the continued reference to "1287 AM" is merely part of the branding (and yes, I have an opinion about such a practice). At least in their latest circular they acknowledge that streaming and social media are the only remaining distribution platforms: The transmitter installed for Voice of Hope has been revealed by a photo as a Nautel NX-50. For 945 kHz from Yavne, closed around 2015 year, 100 kW had been listed. So mentions of 50 and 100 kW as current transmission powers are presumably speculations, drawn from the assumption that the equipment in use until ca. 2015 and 2019, respectively, has been reacti- vated as it was. This stands in contrast to FM transmitters, which require widespread dispersion and may encounter limitations in reception within protected areas and shelters. "As part of our commitment to preparedness, particularly in communities near the border and areas under threat, we are introducing radio recep- tion through AM transmitters with broader coverage," Communications Minister Shlomo Karhi (Likud) said. "Recognizing the pivotal role of communication in emergencies, we have expanded the Idan Plus system and allocated funds for its integration into shelters. Additionally, we are providing communication services to residents in border communities, along with additional emergency broadcast channels. Preparedness and fortifying the home front are crucial steps toward ensuring victory." A hopefully short trial period The trial period will involve collecting user feedback, with subsequent improvements planned to optimize the effectiveness of the emergency communication infrastructure, the Communications Ministry said. The col- laborative efforts aim to establish a robust and reliable system that can play a vital role in saving lives during critical situations. "In anticipation of potential events, we have restored an additional capa- bility that will serve as an information channel for alerting, guidance, and explanation to the public," said Communications Ministry Director- General Mymon Shmila. According to Jiji Tsushin on Dec 29, 2023, KDDI decided to remove aged two shortwave transmitters from Yamata transmitter site in Koga, Ibaraki Prefecture. The removing works will be done in 2024 fiscalyear (April 2024-March 2025) for 10 months. During the period some services, such as "Shiokaze" to North Korea, will not be able to transmit on two waves at the same time. The original article is at At Yamata transmitter site, there are 7 x shortwave transmitters. Hitachi Kokusai Electric SP-1 300kW x 1 SP-1 100kW x 2 (reduced power from 300 kW in 2008-2009 year) installed in 1993 year. Ampegon TSW2300D 300kW x 4 installed in 2013 year. Probably each one of old Hitachi Kokusai Electric 300kW and 100kW trans- mitters will be removed. (Takahito Akabayashi, Tokyo-JPN, wor Jan 06) Re: Reduction of shortwave transmitters at KDDI Yamata transmitter site. That was already my conclusion as well. Keeping only a single of the Hitachi transmitters in (regular) operation makes little sense. Just think of spare parts. But what makes also little sense is the statement that transmissions will have to be reduced over a period of 10 months and then increase again. I don't see how the scrapping of the no longer used transmitters will affect operations over more than a few hours, while they disconnect every- thing. The characteristic of this planned 10 month period is, as I read the Jiji piece, that Shiokaze can be transmit on a single frequency only. Probably this statement inadvertently gave away NHK plannings for the next stages of phasing out shortwave. (Ron Howard-CA-USA, wor June 2, 2022) Re: Jiji: Shortwave Radio for Japanese Abductees Faces Crisis: North Korea jamming of Shiokaze during 1300 to 1400 UT. Contrary to this article, based upon my frequent monitoring of Shiokaze / Sea Breeze during the 13-14 UT time period, I found that after May 2022, all NorthKorea jamming ended against Shiokaze during the 13-14 time period. Have not regularly observed Shiokaze at any of their other times. The jamming has not been heard since then. But it should be noted that Shiokaze often makes poor frequency assignments, landing on frequencies that al- ready have a station on frequency or which frequency is already jammed against some other station, perhaps causing confusion that the jamming is against Shiokaze. Hiroshi (Japan), who monitors Shiokaze on a daily basis, has also observed this lack of jamming during 13-14 UT. Receivers "VEF 201" and "VEF 204". "VEF-201" has been produced by the Riga State Electrotechnical Plant "VEF" since 1969. Designed for reception in the DV, SV and 5 HF sub-bands. Since the beginning of 1970, the VEF-204 radio receiver has been produced by the Riga Electrotechnical Plant VEF. The "VEF-204" radio receiver is an export version of the "VEF-201" model. The receiver differs from the base one in other HF subbands, starting at 13 meters. To this day, this legen- dary "VEF-204" remains in my collection, which I really like for its shape. The scale on the receivers was digitized in meters, so for convenience, I made an overhead plastic scale indicating frequencies in kHz, which was more convenient, since station frequencies are announced in kHz. Power is supplied from six elements of type R-20 (A-373). Since it was ex- pensive to buy 6 batteries regularly, I purchased a separate mains power supply for the receiver, which I inserted into the battery compartment. The power supply was specially produced for the "VEF" receiver by the factory, and I accidentally saw it in a radio store. With batteries,I used the receiver when traveling, and with a power supply on my desk, where everything was dedicated to the radio. Later I switched to a lightweight device - the "DEGEN DE1103" receiver and the "DEGEN 31 MS Active loop antenna" antenna, which is still considered a good device to- day. There were other receivers, but these were for the soul, to listen to the radio in nature. I consider the radio a member of the family. Now is the time when you can buy any receiver for your soul, but it all comes down to financial issues and not everyone can afford to buy a so- phisticated unit for DX training. This is briefly about radio receivers, about which you can write a lot, apparently everyone has their own opinion on their receiver. But it all depends on many factors - your age, how much we can pay for the receiver and the relationship in the family to your hobby, which for me was positive, but not always cloudless, and there were years when I simply did not engage in radio broadcasting for years. But I remember everything that was laid down from childhood with love. I don't know whether I will have new receivers, everything around me is changing. But that will be a completely different story. The history of the Volgograd (united) ORTPC begins with radio broadcasting. From the State Archives (newspaper "Povolzhskaya Pravda" No. 205 dated September 5, 1933): "The regional radio committee informs all radio listeners that on September 5, broad- casting begins through the Stalingrad 10-kW radio station RV-34, at a wave of 541.5 m." Details in Russian - Communications for Victory: how the world's most powerful medium-wave station was built. Almost immediately after the declaration of war in the USSR, the construc- tion of the world's most powerful radio station began. On July 1, 1941, a decree of the Council of People's Commissars of the USSR was issued "On the construction of a radio station in the Kuibyshev area" - "Con- struction No. 15 of the NKVD Osobstroy". The planned power of the station was supposed to be 1200 kW, fantastic for those years. Theoretically, it was impossible to achieve such power under the conditions of that time due to the lack of proper radio tubes. This problem for the USSR was solved by Alexander Lvovich Mints, the creator of long-wave radio stations named after. Comintern" with a power of up to 500 kW, which began broadcasting in 1933. In the year we celebrate 90 years of transmissions from Droitwich, the BBC has announced its intention to shut this historic transmitter down. The campaign to keep longwave is still very young, and consists essentially of the 13 people on this mailing list, but it is encouraging to see nearly 2500 people already having signed our petition. Please continue to refer anyone who might be interested in signing to I'm getting in touch now to let you know our current plan of action: Plan A: Keep BBC Radio 4 Longwave. We have already contacted the BBC on this issue multiple times, and contri- buted to the Radio 4 Feedback programme. Some of those contacted have been sympathetic, but the general view of the BBC is that nobody listens to LW any more and maintaining the transmitter is a waste of money. They have not provided any evidence for this, and have not been able to produce any listening figures for longwave. Please contact the BBC if you haven't al- ready, to complain about the planned demise of longwave, and help to prove them wrong! You can contact them quickly and easily here. It has been heartening to receive messages from listeners in Europe, and as far away as Newfoundland, and it is becoming increasingly clear that the Droitwich transmitter is one of the most important in the world, with a large international audience. This is a point that has not been emphasised to the BBC, and will therefore guide our next stage of campaigning. I am going to contact my MP specifically on the issue of listeners abroad, and suggest to him that it might be worth approaching the Foreign Office to discuss the impact of losing the voice of the BBC in Europe. He is very sympathetic to our cause, and the Droitwich transmitter is inside his constituency. Plan B: Amateur Longwave. Our PlanB will come into play if it becomes impossible to persuade the BBC and government to retain longwave transmissions. The plan would be to ob- tain an Ofcom license to broadcast on longwave from an alternative site using an underground aerial, since the costs of maintaining the Droitwich transmitter would be too high. This would keep longwave broadcasting, but we would lose our iconic transmitter, and listeners abroad would no longer be served. Were we forced to choose this option, however, we would need to start a fundraising campaign to set up and maintain transmissions. If you have any other ideas or suggestions, please do let the group know. Thank you to everyone who has already contributed your comments and sug- gestions, and for sharing the petition. Let us enter 2024 with a degree of optimism, even in the midst such troubled times worldwide.
