I asked Manuel Mendez, Spain: "We are concerned that LRA36 may have been deleted. Can you find out any- thing from your contacts? Glenn" (Glenn Hauser-OK-USA, hcdx and wor Jan 19) His reply {with my translation}: Hello, Glenn, LRA 36 in the latest campaign, of 2023, got a great boost thanks to Juan Benavente, who really knows radio, is a ham, and really en- joyed the work he did. I wrote to Radio Nacional to tell them how convenient it would be for Juan to continue in charge of the station during this new year, or at least ad- vise the new personnel who turn over every year, with the objective of following guidelines similar to those of 2023; in addition, I know that Juan Benavente would continue to be very satisfied doing that job. Personnel at the base and of Radio Nacional thanked me for my email and as far as I know did everything possible for Juan to continue, but ultimately, nothing of this was taken into account, and Juan Benavente has already re- turned to Argentina; so that means that as far as I know, LRA 36 will re- turn to previous years, that is, we shall surely have to wait weeks for the new personnel to get organized, trained how to operate the station, and then be able to go on the air. But I don't know at all whether LRA 36 has ceased transmissions, nor do I know where to find out that information. From what they told me, they will return with the summer session when possible, but not at all, of course, like it was in 2023. Cordial greetings. We must be alert especi- ally on Saturdays. No vocal ID ToH, just theme mx. 11950 kHz AM CUBA Mesa Redonda TV audio, via Bauta site 2355 0100* UT 2024-Jan-11 SPA M babble, theme mx just after ToH into more talk, short mx. Weak and fluttery, good audio. 6000 kHz Quiv scheduled // barely modu- lated, seemed // but not synchro. 11760 kHz was on shortly before but a lot stronger. 9710 kHz RHC SPA on same time, not parallel. 6000 kHz pulled plug 0055 UT. 0101 UT 11760 kHz came back up right after 11950 kHz went off, so is same tx as 11950 kHz tonight, 9710 kHz synchro but buried under co-ch. * Notes for some context: On one occasion, two equal level RHC audio sources were heard (mis)patched into the same Bauta "good 25mb tx" on 11760 kHz, resulting in echo effect, and providing evidence of two audio circuit banks at one tx site with ~100 msec relative time delay. So, the relative RHC audio delay between 2 x // txs at Bauta is either usually zero or occasionally 100 ms. Bejucal was observed to be about 50 msec off of Quivican RHC audio timing for // programming when the former site was still active. Bejucal last used 9535 kHz and 9710 kHz for the morning and late afternoon RHC SPA broadcasts until it disappeared July 2023. After a silent period, those freqs returned using Bauta txs. 9535 kHz subsequently disappeared again, and now 9710 kHz Bauta is the only morning 31 m freq, and is also used 2200+ Z currently. Quivican relative RHC audio timing is consistently 1.4 sec ahead of Bauta, but on at least one occasion was ~2.4 sec. The same, overall, site-relative audio timing characteristics have also held for the occasional spurious SWBC band appearances of Radio Rebelde, when compared vs. Bauta 5025 kHz. The same, site-relative audio timing delays are not reliably observed for Mesa Redonda relays via parallel, multiple RHC tx sites (such as 6000 vs. 11950 kHz); it appears that sometimes the MR audio is picked up directly from Cubavision TV, or sometimes indirectly from Radio Rebelde. By the same methodology, there also appears to be a backup tx site, or at least a backup tx with an alternate audio source of some sort, for 5025kHz Radio Rebelde, heard only once here. Its relative audio timing vs. parallel, known Bauta txs was unique, and the audio quality was better than the primary tx. It is not known why that tx would not be used now that the primary Rebelde 5025 kHz Bauta tx has been off the air for several weeks. In general, Bauta audio has been "pretty good" lately with a few 11760 kHz exceptions on bad days, but if you hear "Cairo audio" it's probably coming from Quivican. (David E. Crawford, Indian River City-FL-USA, wor Jan 11) CUBA 11760 kHz, Jan 13 at 0745 UT, JBA Spanish S5 vs local noise bursts, therefore RHC way overtime and way weak. Something's always wrong at RHC. At 2322 UT, Spanish at S=9+20/30dB with plenty modulation. Is difference only due to propagation? (Glenn Hauser-OK-USA, hcdx Jan 14) The "bad patch cord" was in use on 11760 kHz again yesterday (17 Jan) for the afternoon broadcast up through the 2000 Z ENG segment, so there were continuous dropouts. 11760 kHz was on and all Bauta audio is clean this morning at 1330+ UT 18 Jan Z, so far. Then it disappeared abruptly at 1417 Z. I expect it will be back later this morning. 6000 kHz SPA is on from Quivican with intermittent "Cairo audio", with the usual audio ~1.4 sec ahead of Bauta 11760 kHz. 9710 kHz Bauta is on with good SPA audio a little ahead of 11760 kHz, by about 200 msec at 1330 UT, down to about 100 msec by 1415 Z. It remains on the air after the other two Bautas turned off, as of 1425 Z anyway. 15140 kHz was also on for the first time in a few weeks, with good SPA audio. It started full synchro with 11760 kHz at 1330 UT, but then about 100 msec off at 1410 Z. There was no evident audio squeal. It pulled the plug abruptly at 1415 Z. So, for the moment, there appear to be 3 working Bauta txs again. Perhaps RadioCuba finally got caught up on some of their spare parts payments to AliBaba {BBEF China D.P.R. ? wb.} . I suspect Bauta is using VOIP or similar internal audio distribution now, maybe, which doesn't guarantee a packet delivery time and could result in random, small, mutual audio synchronization differences across txs common to the one site. This appears to have been gradually phased in during re- cent months. 15230 kHz Quivican outlet on air is missing this morning. 6000 kHz evening ENG was probably via a Bauta tx for the past two nights (17and 18 Jan Z); audio was good, and the signal was weaker than the usual evening Quivican 6000 tx, which had degenerated to completely useless. The usual 11760 and 15230 kHz were both missing for the evening SPA broad- cast on 18 Jan, checked around 01 Z, so there were zero SPA freqs noted. Sometimes they'll show on 11670 kHz at night, but nothing audible there either. 4765 kHz was missing at one random check last night. 5025kHz remains miss- ing in action also. David E. Crawford Indian River City, Florida United States of America, North America. [later more] More RHC observation 11760 kHz came back up briefly 1445-1448 UT, no audio, just a bad squeal, which may have been an attempt to tune up this morning's 15140 kHz tx on 25 meters (the "squealer tx" has been used on 11670, 11760, and 13740 kHz in the past, but only 15140 kHz recently until it went silent). Then the "good" tx came back on 11760 kHz, much stronger than the squealer, and has been on since. Reception is good here in Florida just now at 1600Z, fading up and down a bit more than normal, so propagation seems a bit disturbed. 9710 kHz just pulled the plug at 1600 UT, leaving 11760 kHz as the only active tx. (David E. Crawford, Indian River City-FL-USA, wor Jan 18) I note that at 1530 UT Jan 18, 11760 kHz is there but very weak. I checked against a USA based SDR and noted a weak signal there as well. I regularly keep trying to hear Icelandic longwave across the Atlantic while I still can, since it is scheduled to be shut down some time in 2024 This recording in the link below is Iceland longwave on 189 kHz around 0200 UTC Sunday Jan 14, just a few hours before the volcanic eruption there. It was heard at my location in Damascus, MD state, on the US east coast, with a weak signal and some QRN. The audio was not good enough to copy and I don't speak the language, but as far as I know Iceland is the only broadcaster on that frequency. 189kHz has been more audible than usual here the last few nights, but pre- viously much of this winter LW propagation has been usually bad. RRI Nabire started at S2/3 but by 0830UT was S4/5 with very pleasant Indo- nesian pop music, occasional announcements and two short news bulletins by a woman ("Informasi"). Two days earlier on 11 Jan Nabire suddenly off at 0822 UT but today with extended bcst. OAW6C may have had a modulation issue during s/on as the recorded Peruvian Natl anthem and opening anmts in Quechua appeared weak under a strong carrier (SDR was in QAM mode). When live programming started, I switched to AM and LSB (the latter to avoid a weak carrier on 4820.7 kHz) which provided normal modulation at a good S4 level with Peruvian music and announcers speaking in Quechua and frequent time hacks. Switched to QAM and again modulation had improved to S4 but I set the bandwidth to 4819.2 kHz to 4820.6 kHz to avoid the carrier. Bottom line - both stations per- forming quite well with trans-pacific E-W paths. (Bruce W. "Galei Tzahal" ("IDF Waves"), the radio station of the country's armed forces - the Israel Defense Forces - the IDF, with the beginning of the new year 2024, again broadcasts on medium waves, and in this case on two frequencies at once - on the main one - 1287 kHz (with power 100 kW), on which the station ceased broadcasting in 2005, and 945 kHz - on which Galei Tzahal also broadcast in the earlier past. All of these unexpectedly resumed medium-wave broadcasts of Galei Tzahal are conducted from a transmission center in the city of Yavne, not far from the largest city in Israel, Tel Aviv (note that once upon a time, short-wave foreign broadcasting of Israel, Kol Israel, also operated from this transmission center "("Voice of Israel"), including overcoming jamm- ing, broadcast to the USSR; however, all shortwave broadcasts of Israeli foreign broadcasting were stopped in 2013, despite the fact that since 2008, only one Israeli foreign broadcasting service remained on short waves - Persian edition of "Kol Israel" for Iran); the shortwave antennas at Yavne were dismantled around 2017). At the moment, the Galei Tzahal radio station, which has now started broad- casting again on SV, is the only radio broadcaster in Israel using medium waves. Other broadcasters have abandoned them, so the country's state broadcasting left medium wave around 2012. (via Anatoly Klepov-RUS, RUSdx #1272 via wwdxc BC-DX TopNews Jan 14) KOREA D.P.R. North Korea halts radio station known for sending coded messages to spies in Seoul. Seoul, Jan. 13 (Yonhap) North Korea is pressing ahead with measures to disband its inter-Korean organizations, apparently stopping a radio station previously used to send encrypted messages to its spies in South Korea. As of Saturday, the North appears to have stopped broadcasting the state-run Pyongyang Radio and cut off access to its website. The latest move comes after North Korean leader Kim Jong-un ordered "readjusting and reforming" its organizations in charge of inter-Korean affairs during a key Workers' Party meeting last month amid growing cross-border tensions. Pyongyang Radio is known for broadcasting a series of mysterious num- bers, presumed to be coded messages, giving directions to its agents operating in South Korea. The North resumed such broadcasts in 2016 after suspending them in 2000, when the two Koreas held their first historic summit. On Saturday, North Korea said it also held a meeting the previous day to decide to dissolve organizations in charge of civilian exchanges with the South, according to the Korean Central News Agency (KCNA). All relevant organizations, including the North Side Committee for Im- plementing June 15 Joint Declaration, the North Headquarters of the Pan- national Alliance for Korea's Reunification, the Consultative Council for National Reconciliation and the Council for the Reunification of Tangun's Nation, will be readjusted, the KCNA said. The meeting also called for a new reunification policy based on the view that the "South Korean puppets" who have pursued only the collapse of the North's power and unification by absorption are the "main enemy of the DPRK to be completely wiped out." DPRK stands for the North's official name, the Democratic People's Republic of Korea. North Korea has stepped up provocations after Kim defined inter-Korean ties as relations "between two states hostile to each other" and called for stepped-up preparations to "suppress the whole territory of South Korea" at the year-end ruling party meeting. Kim also for a "fundamental change" in dealing with South Korea and in- structed the disbandment of organizations in charge of inter-Korean affairs. As a follow-up measure, North Korean Foreign Minister Choe Son-hui led discussions early this month to dismantle the United Front Department in charge of relations with the South, according to state media. Relations between South and North Korea remain strained, with tensions sharply escalating last week after Pyongyang fired around 350 rounds of artillery shells in waters off its west coast between Jan. 5 and 7, the first live-fire drills near the sea border since December 2022. Brought back some nice memories. Many years ago, I loved to listen to Myanmar Defense Forces Br. Station located at Taunggyi, the capital of the Shan State. Here is my audio clip from 2011 year, which contains a typical 5770 kHz. bottom-of-the-hour format (Myanmar's top-of-the-hour), with indigenous instrumental music and a very distintive military marching band Here are my Jan 12, 2024 (Friday) Myanmar observations today: 5919.0 kHz: Did a quick check at 1315 UT and again with positive Myanmar Radio reception. So three consecutive days on their new frequency. Thanks very much to Ralph Perry, who on Jan 11, noted varying frequencies (5919.01-08v kHz). 5985 kHz: Myanmar Radio Yegu-Yangon heard this Friday from 1535+ UT with anomaly(?); was not in English as usual, but with announcers in Burmese and playing music. I recall hearing the same on a Friday last year, so I don't know if this is some kind of regular (or semi-regular?) Friday feature or not? Possibly too busy siren jamming of RFA Khmer from 1230-1330 UT on 15155 11885 and 9390 kHz for the Cambodian government. Vietnamese jammers start- ed around the 21st of June 23. It was thought the jamming was intended to coincide with the July 23 Cambodian elections but the siren jamming has continued on a daily basis well into January 24. The 2230-2330 UT RFA Khmer is also heavily jammed but the 1430-1500 UT transmission in Khmer has remained untouched. So maybe not enough trans- mitters currently available in Vietnam to jam this transmission on 9670 kHz during this time period. Time will tell.
