During that date, a severe storm of rain and wind took place in large areas of Greater Buenos Aires and Province of Buenos Aires, causing se- rious material destruction, and even affecting human lives. As a result of that devastating storm, the antenna of CNN RADIO, 167 meters high, fell to the ground, located in the premises of General Pedro Diaz Street 3267 in the city of William C. Morris, Hurlingham Party, Buenos Aires Province, 34 35 25.36 S 58 39 53.09 W tall strong mast installation. 34.5903673 S 58.6643390 W and a reserve alternative MW mast nearby too. causing destruction of it,and significant damage to the surrounding build- ings that were on site. Since then, the transmitter stopped broadcasting at 950 kHz and could only be received through its digital platforms and website. It is currently un- known whether the signal is radiated from a new transmission tower mounted on the same site where LR3 has its Transmitter Plant, or temporarily from another site. Thanks to Maximiliano Falcon, who informed us of the reacti- vation of the station. (Argentina en AM y FM Face_Book page) Since the beginning of 2024, a new AM transmitter is being heard, identi- fying as Radio Chart "La Voz de los que tienen voz" {corr. by wb.}. It operates on the frequency of 1490 kHz, although the broadcaster announ- ces "1480 kHz". Apparently it is located in the Party of Ezeiza, in the southern zone of the Conurban Bonaerense. Currently only posting tango music, with brief commercial ads from the area. Reception is possible thanks to the fact that RADIO GAMA - usual on that frequency being inactive for some time. This new station should not be confused with CW154 Radio Charrua (AM 1540 kHz) from Paysandu, Uruguay. If anyone can provide more data about this station they will be welcome, since the location of their studios and transmitter antenna is unknown. Although we have detected a radiating mast of 48meters high of an AM radio located in the Coordinates: 34 51 24.5 S 58 32 20.4 W {sic, nothing found so far on map, wb.} { EMANUEL AM 1490 Ezeiza found in Google search. } located on the street Neuquen 920 from the town of La Union, Partido de Ezeiza, Buenos Aires Province, but we cannot confirm that this antenna be- longs to this new station. Andrey Novgorodsky from Kharkov writes: I am very upset by the information about the termination of the "Mailbox" quiz and about the underfunding for sending verification cards. In this regard, I would like to clarify whether the station completely stops sending paper QSL cards for all in- coming reports or will it send a certain number selectively? I also saw on the site that I won the last quiz for January, and would like to find out when the prizes will be sent. Unfortunately, this question has come to a head because in four years we have not been able to receive anything from you from Korea - neither QSL cards, nor prizes for various quizzes. Perhaps all the materials were simply lost by mail. I would also be glad if you have any information about previous shipments to my address. ANSWER: Andrey, today the situation is as follows. As we have said many times, funding for our radio for this year has been significantly reduced, and no money has been allocated for postage costs at all. Over the past year, a large number of verification cards and gifts remained unsent, since there was not enough money allocated to send them either. However, the employee responsible for sending correspondence continues to fill out cards, confirming incoming reports. We sort them by recipient and store them until better times. We hope that sooner or later funding will resume. Regarding shipments. You were the winner of the following quizzes: August 2020, February 2021, March and July 2023, January 2024. Last year the prizes were not sent because there was not enough money, and this year too. But for 2020-2022 everything was sent. (Alex M {? [selected SDR options, span 12.5 kHz RBW 15.3 Hertz] (wb df5sx, wwdxc BC-DX TopNews Saturday Febr 13) Re: Kyrgyztelekom target radio to AFG ? in WRTH 2024. Hi Wolfie, on page #563 there is a Multilingual entry for IBRA on 5130 kHz 1500-1800 UT. Multilingual because also other languages than Pashto has been reported by Tony Rogers at least: The transmitter on 5130 kHz was switched on at 1446 UT today with tones until the start of songs at 1456 UT, which continued until 1533 UT (no an- nouncements during this time); at 1533 UT a new programme started which appeared to be in Kazakh (despite me saying that I hadn't previously heard anything in a Central Asian language on a Monday!). I tried translating some of the audio with Google Translate to see if I could identify the language for sure and using Kazakh as the source it did manage to translate a few words into "I'm the only one who has been in contact with each other in his life and knows what he sees and knows", so maybe that was part of a Christian message in Kazakh. Otherwise only odd words here and there so not exactly a successful exercise. Stopped listening at 1555 UT so not sure if 'Radio Sadaye Zindagi' pro- grammes in Dari followed. With today, 1 May, being the first weekday of the month, the Kyrgyz trans- mitter on 5130 kHz should hopefully be back on air from around 1455 UT through to close at 1755v UT. And with it being a Monday and based on previous monitoring it should be in Dari until 1530 UT with Christian talks (or perhaps mostly music), fol- lowed by South Asian-style songs (at least that's what they sound like to me) between 1530-1600 UT, which may include canned ID's in English such as "You've chosen the right station, it's Hit Short Wave" etc, and at 1600 UT back into Dari with Christian programmes for Afghanistan from 'Radio Sadaye Zindagi' (Afghan Voice) through to sign-off. It has also been heard in a Central Asian language on some days, possibly Kazakh, but I've not noticed that on a Monday so far. The 15 kW transmitter is unlikely to make it to the UK at this time of year but it might be heard with decent reception using the online Kiwi- SDR's in Novosibirsk and Novokuzneck, both in Russia, and weaker on the KiwiSDR in New Delhi, India {or Perseus SDR in Doha Qatar ME target, wb.}. I don't think there is really any fixed schedule. 73, Mauno {Ritola-FIN, wrth Febr 13) Many thanks dear Mauno, yes, found on page #563 this small item. vy73 de wolfie df5sx (wb df5sx, wwdxc BC-DX TopNews Saturday Febr 13) MUSIC Music Programmes on Shortwave - Version 4 now available for B-23 broadcast season. (Ed Cichorek-NJ-USA, via NASWA Electronic Flashsheet #1138 Febr 11) NEW ZEALAND Radio New Zealand (RNZ) is looking for a buyer for a block of land it owns in West Auckland to plug a financial hole and keep broad- cast on the AM spectrum alive, at least for now. The 7.4ha block in Henderson, metres away from the Lincoln Rd off-ramp, is home to a long- standing red and white transmission tower. When RNZ's predecessor bought the land in 1934 it was a rural pasture, but it has long since been enve- loped by urban sprawl. It has grown to a rateable value of $6 million. But, while the value of the land has continued to increase, the cost of the ageing AM transmission network has become a burden on the broadcaster. Chief technology and operations officer Mark Bullen said RNZ was looking at having to spend up to $13 million across the whole network to keep it going. "Further remediation [at Henderson] is not cost effective and will lead to significant outages. We now need to consider other options, in- cluding removal and/or replacing the masts," he said. Old-fashioned AM radio is a potential lifesaver in emergency situations and the govern- ment is aware of its importance. In the latest round of funding, RNZ received an additional $1.7 million a year for AM infrastructure, but that money would also have to meet the cost of running Parliament Radio. "Land sales offer a potential avenue for funding the capital needs of the network without impacting on other RNZ priorities," Bullen said. Meanwhile, the Ministry of Housing and Urban Development has expressed an interest in acquiring the land from RNZ for potential development. The Ministry works with K?inga Ora on large scale developments, such as at Carrington Rd in Mount Albert, usually to deliver a mix of market price, KiwiBuild and social housing. The land at Henderson is zoned light industry so it would need a plan change before that could happen. If an application to the council saw it changed to mixed housing urban zoning, a developer could theoretically get around 200 houses on the block. RNZ has set itself a deadline of 2026 by which time a decision on the future of AM broadcast infrastructure must be made. A cashed up RNZ would then look to replace the Lincoln Rd tower on a new site. It has already instructed a telecommunications contractor to apply for resource consent for a new tower on a property at Awhitu on the southern shores of the Manukau Harbour. Bullen still firmly believes AM has a role to play. That's because AM waves travel far greater distances than FM. "For many people, especially those living away from the main city centres in remote areas or in rugged terrain, it is still their primary means of keeping in touch with news and information," he said. He also pointed out that during Cyclone Gabrielle [in early 2023], AM played an important role in getting up-to-date infor- mation to far-flung reaches as the cellular phone network went out. Yet, despite the broadcaster's best efforts, AM radio's days in New Zealand may inevitably come to a close. RNZ's licence for the spectrum expires in 2032, and it's only sought a consent term at ?whitu of 25 years. Civil Defence said radio was a "vital tool" in times of emergency, and AM had proven to be effective, but it stopped short of saying it was abso- lutely necessary. AM's reach could be supplanted by new satellite techno- logies like Starlink in the not too distant future, in the opinion of an unofficial source within the organisation. Minister for Media And Communications, Melissa Lee, likewise said AM was still a "lifeline", but said she was speaking with RNZ about "transitioning away from legacy transmission infrastructure to newer, more cost-effective solutions". It might be the future, but it's not progress, according to Radio Tarana [1386 kHz AM] broadcaster Jilesh Desai who says AM is of "prime impor- tance" for communities across the city. "The Indian community is depen- dent on AM, because they can listen to news in their own language. It's more comfortable, and it keeps them connected." RNZ's AM network capacity is fully utilised in Auckland by various local stations, and with no re- maining FM frequencies in the region, some could cease to exist. SWEDEN In 2016, Radio Sweden already reduced the section in Russian. This happened immediately after the cessation of broadcasting on short waves and due to the lack of audience interest in broadcasts via the Internet. That's an absolutely false statement. It should be noted that the section was closed, not reduced (improper machine translation). Radio Sweden ceas- ed their shortwave and mediumwave broadcasts in October 2010, while the Russian service was closed in March 2016 (which is very 'immediately' lol). By that time,Radio Sweden's focus had already been shifted to the domestic immigrant audience for many years, and they finally decided to close German and Russian services, which were remainders of the external ser- vice. I (and many others too, judging from the number of followers and feedback on their social media pages) listened to them until the closure. Here's statement from Ingemar Loefgren (Head of SR International) on that matter: "We are 'turning the boat' around and focusing our efforts on the 'new Swedes' (immigrants) and newcomers (refugees). The German and Russian edi- tions are remnants of the former external broadcasting/utlandsprogrammet, which is no longer compatible with our task of reflecting the diversity in Sweden". (Alex M {? Miatlikov} "deneb-radio-dx" via RUSdx #1276 via wwdxc BC-DX TopNews Febr 11) Re: Radio Sweden / RUS'-DX items, 11 Febr. The closures started in 2006 with the broadcasts in Estonian and Latvian, launched in the early 90s. The explanation they gave was that it is no longer necessary to present Swedish democracy as model to these countries. Next was in 2008 linear radio in German, leaving only a web presence for the time being. In this case they referred to a dramatic loss of listeners within a few years, without providing any evidence or source for that claim. In fact it was just curtains after the head of that language service had quit, leaving the sinking ship. In 2009 followed the closure of the special Belarus broadcasts they had started only in 2004. Statement in this case: They were just an experiment anyway. 2010 the end of AM transmissions, with a comment from editors of the Rus- sian service that they were "disappointed" and people internally remarking that SR leadership seems to believe that the rest of the world is like Sweden. In the same moment the language services Albanian and Serbo-Cro- atian ended as well. Russian, English and German remained at this point as web pages. In so far it is correct to call it a "reduction" of Russian (and English). I have not followed the further developments after this point. Has this short-lived revival of Russian been noticed by the "international broad- casting community" (whatever that may be) at all? I can't remember any previous mentions of it. That statement about focussing on immigrants was prominently served to German-speaking audiences as well. I would not say that it has aged well. A final note: I was told that until 1989 the German broadcasts had a condescending attitude towards listeners from the GDR. At least it has been perceived as such. September 2023 Elexon meeting: Background:The contract between Elexon and the Energy Networks Association (ENA) to pass operational costs for the Radio Teleswitch Service (RTS) through the BSC as 'BSC Costs' is due to expire on 31 March 2024 ... the transition away from the RTS is unlikely to conclude by 31 March 2024. Conclusions: The Issue Group recognised that all RTS devices need to be replaced by the end of 2025 as the BBC can no longer guarantee operational and maintenance service beyond this date. Therefore, the Issue 108 group acknowledged that December 2025 is the absolute deadline to replace RTS. There is the opinion that it rather looks as if Arqiva will still continue to modulate the 198 kHz carrier with Radio 4 programme audio (the vanilla feed as on FM, which, to add more nerdy speculation, could even be used as source after shutting down the separate Radio 4 LW distribution), because by now you would expect the "Retune!!!" stuff to creep in. But that's just "we do not want to speculate, but!!!" Meanwhile I would not be surprised if no definite answer will become available before 31 March, 2300 UTC. Unfortunately, Sunshine Radio on 855 kHz had its service switched off for the final time on Friday the 19 th of January 2024. There was some separate programming on 855 kHz prior to close down.
