I just looked at a number of remote SDRs and note that 3250 kHz is being heard / seen widely, including Hawaii, Grayland WA, across northern US, near Boston, and even into Ireland, but absent from Iceland and Norway where I thought I might see it being received. All at around 06:20 UT. Still going strong at 06:28 UT [...] [...] An interesting pattern emerged on 3250 kHz after going off for a few seconds at 06:30 UT. Carriers were noted strongly also on 3100 and 3400 kHz, and weakly below on 2950 kHz ! Very interesting, for sure! Wish they'd announce the experiments a bit more to understand them! (Walter Salmaniw-BC-CAN, wor March 1) ALASKA HAARP. I've been getting carriers on 9600 kHz, on and off at same time accompanying 9594 9606 9612 kHz, 0240-0255+ UT. Direct, then via W coast remote. (Glenn Hauser-OK-USA, hcdx and wor March 2) You mean 0230 UT ? But apparently posted at 0225 UT. Check your clock? I wonder if it was on 5800 kHz earlier despite WRMI ? MHz frequencies publicized for the final night of the current series, UT Sunday March 3 at 0200-0800 UT: 2.8, 3.25, 3.3, 4.1, 5.4, 6.8, 9.6 MHz HAARP tests on final night UT March 3, via KFS omni, from 0448 UT nothing found on higher frequencies until 0451 UT reaching 3250 kHz with sweeps upward every 20 seconds with pauses. Makes nice symmetrical pattern on waterfall of diagonal lines each side of 3250 kHz out to about 3190 / 3310 kHz. By 0536 UT longer sweeps with no pauses, still restarting every icosa- second. There's a weak line on 3215 kHz which must be WWCR: I tune there briefly and can hear the sweeps going thru it. Finally off at 0603* UT. Strictly-SWBC editors may be inclined to throw this and my 9600 kHz, 5800 kHz logs out, but I point out they concern ute intruders into broadcast bands. Their mission is to perform maintenance and optimization work on the audio chain, install a new console, and place the FM antenna and the tower that will be used for the new LRA 36 shortwave transmitter. Upon arrival, they discovered that the output stage of the Collins HF 80 transmitter, which is used to transmit LRA 36 programs on 15476 kHz, was burned out. They also found that the tower sections for the shortwave antenna and the audio console had not yet arrived at the base. LRA 36 broadcast regularly until January 13. Then, Juan Benavente, the architect of many LRA 36's achievements in re- cent years, was recalled. With Benavente's departure, the radio was left in the hands of unqualified people, which is evident by the fact that the transmitter burned out the day after he left. The cause of the fire is being investigated. Juan and Nicole Valdebenito (operator) know the sequences necessary to start up the transmitter by heart, but this was not the case with those who came after them. Currently, Petrecca and Garcia are installing the FM antenna for local coverage. It is estimated that the new Studio Console and audio distribu- tor donated by Trialcom will arrive at Joint Antarctic Base Esperanza by the end of next week. The output board of the transmitter is also being sent to replace the burned one and keep it in operation during February. If Juan Benavente had been coordinating, none of these situations would have occurred. Unfortunately, political favors promoted by the previous administration left LRA 36 abandoned in its most important mission, which is shortwave transmission. I estimate that if they agree and the planets align, we could resume LRA36 shortwave broadcasts before the end of February. (Adrian Korol Director of RAE via Horacio Nigro-Uruguay CX3BZ / DXplorer) Juan Benevente confirms that a new 10 kW transmitter is due to be deliver- ed this year. LRA36 often takes breaks around this time of year - midsummer. (Manual Mendez-Spain / British DX Club) There were special tests conducted on February 2nd (Fri) and 3rd (Sat) that were widely reported. (R_A_D) ('Listener's Notebook' by Richard A. SW & MW Project Phase II included 50 / 150 kW SW transmitter, 200 kW MW transmitter, towers, antennas, etc. With our fighting spirits, the staffs got through the procedures of manufacturing, shipping, installation and debugging in time. The project wascompleted during a period of nearly one year. II. Ethiopia TV & FM Projects Phase I and II. After SW & MW Projects Phase I and II were accomplished, BBEF started Ethiopia TV & FM Project Phase I, which meant the establishment of overlay network in the country. It was required to construct 29 new stations, and supply 66 sets of TV and FM transmitters. The equipments to be supplied cover the satellite receiving system, program input devices, the trans- mitter system, the antenna-feeder system, remote microwave links, the ma- chine room monitoring system and generating apparatus. With meticulous arrangement and organization, BBEF finished the equipment production, pro- curement and delivery on time. By for now, the procedures of construction, debugging and acceptance check has come to an end. Ethiopia is quite satisfied with the cooperation and highly appraises the project speed and quality. Ethiopia Broadcast TV Training Phase II was Rounded off trainees in English. (BBEF Beijing-CHN, 2007 - 2011) revised and enriched FRANCE Re: TDF on 9565 kHz Yesterday Evening [and on 28 February] Will be interesting to see if there's a similar transmission tonight. Yes, there was. And again a VERY strong fully decodable signal here in NB-CAN with indoor equipment (KiwiSDR + W6LVP loop). According to my re- cording, the transmitter came on the air (or at least DRM started decod- ing) at just before 02:30 UT. Again, this is on 9565 kHz and on 28 Febr (UTC) this time. The transmission started with a song by Malagasy composer and singer Eusebe Jaojoby (thanks, SoundHound) in progress. More uninter- rupted music followed. Turned out this was not the previously heard RFI Monde (or RFI Afrique feed) but rather RFI Musique, another of the four RFI streams: RFI Monde: tout en francais; RFI Afrique: tout en francais, destine a l'Afrique francophone; RFI Multilingue: pour les langues etrangeres; RFI Musique: diffuse de la musique. I don't know if RFI Musique has ever been on shortwave before or whether they have dedicated FM or DAB(+) outlets in France or elsewhere (WRTH not at hand). The transmission ended at about 02:57, unfortunately, in the middle of a song by Peter Tosh, the deceased Jamaican reggae musician who was also a member of the Wailers. Again, after the RFI DRM transmission ended, there seemed to be a weak re- sidual DRM signal on the frequency. But it wasn't seen on the waterfall of the University Enschede Twente SDR receiver. TDF notes success in expanding reach across mainland France in 2023. By T._Carter_Ross. Published: February 13, 2024. Throughout 2023, network operator TDF worked to deploy 100 new DAB+ trans- mitters at 70 sties across mainland France. Through this effort, more than 55% of French citizens have access to DAB+ digital radio signals and more than 550 radio stations broadcast using the technology in the country. "2023 marks an essential milestone for DAB+, with more than one in two French people now able to listen to the radio thanks to this technology," stated Karim El Naggar, General Director of Audiovisual and Networks at TDF. "I congratulate ... the TDF teams, who, through their expertise and professionalism, enabled the deployment of a very large number of trans- mitters in a very short time." TDF is currently focused on the second phase of deploying the M1 and M2 national multiplexes, which carry 13 services. Since October, TDF has brought online 44 DAB+ transmitters in alignment with the ARCOM deployment plan. This second phase, which brings DAB+ reception to new motorways across the county, is scheduled for completion in the first quarter of 2024. Speaking at the Paris Radio Show in early February 2024, ARCOM President Roch-Olivier Maistre noted that 110 DAB+ multiplexes are not authorized in mainland France. In overseas France, experimental service are on air in Martinique and 20 stations in Reunion have requested the start of a DAB+ experimental service. "No less than 555 services are authorized and more than 60% of the metropolitan population should be covered by this broad- cast standard at the end of March," he said. To celebrate its century of broadcasting, in Nov 2023, Radio Educacion in Mexico began a new feature, Radio Centenaria, to present programs emble- matic of its history. Right now it is only on its AM channel, 1060 kHz, and on-line Monday-Friday at 15-19 hours local time. Each month covers a different decade (February was the 1940s). All of this is of course en Espanol and fascinating. Their Radio Centenaria special site is here and includes the program schedule for the month: In June there will be an Encuentro Diexista of more direct interest to shortwave listeners, and between now and then this column will carry more details about that event and the history of the station. Radio Educacion's shortwave frequency is 6185 kHz. That service began in 1977, which is why the mediumwave centenary carries more heft on AM radio. Compared to its AM cousins the program schedule is more limited (with a lot of good music filler) and can be found online at Classical music fans should take special note of Sunday's Concierto O.S.N. which takes place Sundays from 1815 to 2015 local time (currently 0015- 0215 UTC). March 2024, 12:00 Radio Poland is celebrating its 88th anniversary on the air. The station, launched on March 1, 1936, is part of Poland's public radio network. It broadcasts programmes on developments at home and abroad,Polish foreign policy, the economy, business and foreign investment. Radio Poland, also known as Polish Radio's External Service (Polskie Radio dla Zagranicy), aims to provide objective and impartial information about Poland and the country's stance on international affairs. It reports on developments in Polish society, its daily life as well as scientific and cultural achievements. The thenews.pl website, part of Radio Poland, is a leading English- anguage resource for Polish news. Updated regularly all day, every day, the website covers domestic and foreign affairs, economy and business, culture, sports and human interest stories. Polish Radio launched shortwave broadcasts in English and Polish in 1936. They were discontinued with the outbreak of World War II in 1939. After the end of the war in 1945, the shortwave channel Warszawa III re- sumed external broadcasts. In 1990 Polish Radio started broadcasting in Ukrainian, Belarusian, Lithu- anian, Czech and Slovak. Then in 1994 the External Service began daily broadcasts in several languages via the World Radio Network. In 2007, Polish Radio's External Service launched its news website, now available at Today, Radio Poland broadcasts in Polish and five foreign languages: English, German, Russian, Ukrainian and Belarusian. I bet this be their new chosen frequency, maybe running 18hours a day, and indeed off after 2400 UT like 11820 kHz had been, so what will it victi- mise here, per EiBi listings? On 11915 kHz itself, nothing but CNR2 and RTI. 11920 kHz nothing but one hour a week of VORW via France! 11910 kHz, VOK and NHK, all of those on limited skeds. At 2332 UT I check it into UTwente. In Sync mode if I punch in 11915 kHz it displays 11914.842.03 kHz at S8. Rock steady while normal signals wobble at least a little down to the hundredth of a Hz. If I step up to 11920 kHz and back to 11915 kHz, it then displays 11914.840.44 kHz, again rock steady. Down to 11910 kHz and back up to 11915 kHz: 11915.201.72 kHz - apparently the 'lock' hits an exact spot within the noise bandwidth at the first instant and stix to it! Since the mid-1930s, many radio stations have produced "mailbag" programs in which responses to letters from listeners were heard. Beginning in the mid-1940s, a new type of program emerged - "DX programs." The purpose of these programs was to provide listeners with up-to-date information about stations and their broadcast frequencies in the fastest way possible at that time - live. Another equally important goal was to create an audience that would, at the request of the transmitting station, report on the quality of its reception, receiving in response confirmation from the sta- tion in the form of a QSL receipt card. Some of these programs were of little value, while others were sources of exclusive DX information. The first DXprogram was probably the Australian "DXers Calling", broadcast under the auspices of the Australian Radio DX Club from July 1946. The DX program of Radio Sweden, a Swedish English- language foreign broadcaster called Sweden Calling DXers(SCDX), was not the first in the world, but the weekly 10- minute program on Tuesdays has become one of the most popular. The first episode of the SCDXprogram aired on Saturday, February 28, 1948, with the station's modest HF transmitter power of 12kW. Its regular author and DX editor was one of the leading Swedish specialists in shortwave broadcast reception, Arne Skoog(life 1913-1999). He prepared the text, and the program was voiced by a professional announcer and consisted of DX messages sent by listeners. Beginning in 1948, the SCDX program began sending out a two-page stencil bulletin of the same name to radio clubs and DX correspondents, summariz- ing the material presented in the program. Although the wide range of international contributors, coupled with sometimes lax editing, has left the program vulnerable to errors and occasional hoaxes, SCDX has become a valuable and very popular source of information about DXing. The program was canceled due to budgetary reasons in 1954, but was soon brought back due to popular demand. The newsletter's initial circulation of 50-100 copies grew to 1,200 by 1969, and by 1973 the mailing list reached 1,400 recipients. About 40 percent of all mail received by Radio Sweden was destined for the SCDX program. For a time the program contained tape recordings of radio stations provided by DXers, but this was canceled in 1964 when the program was cut by several minutes. In 1978, celebrating the 30th anniversary of the SCDX program, its creator Arne Skoog retired and was replaced by an American journalist who had worked in the English edition of Radio Sweden since 1975, George Wood (b. 08/10/1949), who in 1990 replaced SCDX created a new program called MediaScan, which was released until 2003. Wood then worked for Swedish radio in a different capacity and left in August 2014. The Russian-language version of the Sweden Calling DXers DX program on the waves of Swedish Radio was "Transmission for long-distance lovers" - the first and only 10-minute DX program in Russian for almost 20 years, published weekly on Tuesdays since 1971. The first year the episodes of this program did not have a permanent presenter and were read alternately by the announcers of the Russian edition (Daniel Pasternak, Alexander Hildebrandt, Ulf Cedenius). Then, at the end of 1971 and the beginning of 1972, Lydia Lundahl became their permanent presenter, who hosted the pro- gram until the end of 1983. In this regard, I remember that once in a conversation with the famous radio presenter Pavel Mikhailov, we discovered a discrepancy in our me- mories about who was the first presenter of Russian DX programs on Radio Sweden. He believed that they were led by Lydia Lundahl from the first issue. Russian DX programs were a shortened version of Sweden Calling DXers and were released under the same number, but contained more information from Soviet DXers and more attention was paid to Russian-language broadcasting (all this according to Lydia Lundahl). Thanks to these broadcasts in the USSR in the 70s, many fans of long-distance reception of radio broadcast- ing stations appeared and DXing, although it was never officially recog- nized, began to be perceived by radio amateurs themselves as one of the types of radio sports even after the complete removal of jamming of "voi- ces" in November 1988 they stopped putting postal obstacles in his way. These programs also contributed to the creation of DX communities (circles and clubs) and their publication of periodic DX publications. The Russian DX program on Radio Sweden was broadcast continuously until October 30, 1990. Although the farewell SCDX newsletter sent to me in English indica- tes its release date of November 20, 1990, it also contains a final greet- ing and gratitude to readers and listeners from Arne Skoog, the founder of the program and the newsletter of the same name. On January 10, 1995, the Russian DX program was resumed and it was already a version of the English-language MediaScan program, which existed until approximately the end of 2002. Radio Sweden's DX program in all languages began with a melody whose origins were unknown to anyone, not even George Wood, nor when it appeared as a theme song,it is believed that it was from 1948. This melody is interesting because if you listen closely, you can clearly distinguish the instrumental sound of two Latin letters of Morse code - C and Q, repeated by the refrain. According to the amateur radio code, the combination CQ (CQ) means a general call, that is, an invitation to com- municate "everyone, everyone!" which seems to echo the name of the DX program "Sweden Calls Diexers". Illustrations for my article: - Arne Skoog - photo: The earliest photo, approximately 1948. Since the departure of long time hosts Shirley Lin and John Van Trieste, this programme, (and others on RTI English), have seen a succession of presenters on what appear to be short-term contracts. New man Fil Leskovsky hails from Slovakia and I believe they also have a Ukrainian on staff as well. As for co-host Sharon Lin - far too much laughter for my liking! Major changes to their programming have taken place over the last year or so, but to me, RTI broadcasts are still far superior to the output from CRI. A shame they have lost so many short wave listeners, especially in the Americas, after the cancellation of the Florida relays. RTS customers urged to arrange switch ahead of shutdown. Over 900,000 energy customers who currently use the Radio Teleswitching Service (RTS) are being urged to take action to upgrade their meters after it was confirmed that the service will end on 30th June 2025. Full press release: (via Mike Barraclough-UK, BrDXC-UK iogr March 5) U.K. Longwave switchoff to impact electricity meters. Almost 1m households will be forced to fit a smart meter or face higher heating bills after the BBC announced it was switching off a 40-year-old radio service. Around 900,000 customers on an Economy 7 or Economy 10 tariff where power is cheaper at night will no longer be able to use systems that rely on the Radio Teleswitch Service (RTS) - a longwave radio signal which tells meters when to change their fees from high to low. It means the only way to continue getting power on these billing plans will be using a smart meter, an internet-connected alternative. The RTS system is common in homes and businesses that are off the gas net- work and use electricity for heating and hot water. They typically use tariffs such as Economy 7 or Economy 10 which offer cheaper power at night - with the RTS signal telling meters when to switch those tariffs on and off. Installed in the 1980s, the RTS system is reaching the end of its opera- tional life. The BBC has decided to turn it off in June 2025. Energy UK, a trade body for energy suppliers, has issued a warning to all customers be- cause of a backlog in suppliers replacing RTS meters. Dhara Vyas, the deputy chief executive of Energy UK, said consumers and suppliers should act now or risk their meter going offline so that customers lost the cheaper tariffs. She said:"This will mean that customers continue to enjoy the benefits they currently get from RTS." The switch-off will affect customers across the UK - including 248,000 homes in Scotland, 232,000 in the Midlands and East Anglia, and 304,000 in London and southern England. The BBC move is part of a wider plan to end all longwave broadcasts be- cause they are energy intensive and longwave radio programmes lack the quality of FM. Its advantage was that longwaves can travel thousands of miles, meaning a single transmitter signal could reach every UK home. The RTS signal was broadcast daily from the BBC's transmitter at Droitwich in Worcestershire. Ofgem, the energy regulator, said: "We have written to suppliers to raise our concerns about the slower progress of installations for smart prepay- ment meters, and the potential impact of that on vulnerable households." { Daily Telegraph (UK), March 2, 2024 }. Februar bzw. 1. Maerz 2024 enthaelt fol- gende Stuecke: "Starts with part of the Concerto for Flute, Harp, and Or- chestra by Mozart, some Tango inspired music from Argentina, and an example of music for high Baroque trumpet by J S Endler. After that an arrangement for piano quartet of The Sea and the Seagulls from Rachmaninoff, and some film score by Caroline Shaw. The last piece is the first movement of Borodin's Quartet No. 2." (Dr. Hansjoerg Biener-D, Bieners DX Digest #44 column March 6) USA From the Isle of Music (kubanische Musik) und Uncle Bill's Melting Pot (Mischprogramm mit Musik aus aller Welt) haben im Maerz ihre letzten Sendungen bei WBCQ Monticello (Maine state US) und werden ab April von Channel_292 in Europa ausgestrahlt. Das gab der Produzent Bill Tilford am 23. Februar 2024 bekannt.
