I forgot to mention in the reply I posted in Radio Magazine F_B group. (Horacio Nigro, Uruguay; also via wor March 20) ANTARCTICA New shortwave transmitter of Radio LRA 36 Arcangel San Gabriel. As we learned in January, the equipment for the modernization of LRA-36 had not found room during the first rotation of the ice breaker which supplies the Esperanza Base in Antarctica. We now learn that an accident, which fortunately did not cause any casual- ties, occurred on March 6 and risks delaying operations. The Sikorky S-61T Triton 2-S-244 helicopter was damaged upon landing at the Esperanza base, the tail rotor struck the ground. It is this helicopter which ensures, among other things, the transfer of equipment between the icebreaker and the bases. On March 13, the General Staff reported that technical staff were collect- ing parts from another device in order to send them to the site, via the Marambio base airport. This will allow minimal repairs to be carried out, to allow the damaged aircraft to make a quick jump to the icebreaker Admiral Irizar. The Triton will then be transported to the continent for repairs. The missions are not compromised, but further delays could be expected. While waiting for the new transmitter, LRA36 continues its broadcasts with the old transmitter on 15476 kHz. (Michel Fremy { BEL? } F_B Page - Radio Magazine) Horacio Nigro Geolkiewsky {apparently forwarding a message from someone else} Just in case, I would like to point out that this is inaccurate informa- tion, dear friends. The optimization and maintenance work of LRA 36 by technicians Alejandro Petrecca and Claudio Garcia from Radio Nacional was successfully carried out. An accident that occurred on March 6 has nothing to do with the tasks of the technical commission which was successfully completed on February 29 and of which I participate in the management from the management of RAE. On the other hand, the new transmitter is being built on the continent and, as planned with the people in charge of the donation, it should be built during this year, and after a testing period at the Pacheco factory, he will be deployed next summer to the Esperanza base. Author Radio Magazine. Horacio Nigro Geolkiewsky, I received photos of the delivery of the equip- ment by the donor to the army, before the departure of the first rotation and that it would be shipped "soon ...". I then had confirmation that he was not on board the ship. (Adrian Korol - RAE Director - Horacio Nigro, Uruguay; via wor March 19) ASCENSION ISL 12050 kHz R Ndarason Intl. at 0730 UT. I realised something about this that might actually be obvious. Nonetheless, it's a few additional facts to add to the mix. According to the "Worldwide Marine Radiofacsimile Broadcast Schedules", HLL2 is on the following frequencies with WEFAX maps: 3585 kHz 1200-0000 UTC 5857.5 kHz ALL BROADCAST TIMES 7433.5 kHz ALL BROADCAST TIMES 9165 kHz ALL BROADCAST TIMES 13570 kHz 0000-1200 UTC J3C 3 kW In general, one usually tunes to the nominal frequency minus 1.9 kHz in USB mode: 3583.1 / 5855.6 / 7431.6 / 9163.1 / 13568.1 kHz for example if one uses FLDigi. Therefore 5855.6kHz is not a new frequency as such, but rather the minus 1.9 kHz 'version' of 5857.5 kHz. According to the WEFAX schedule no charts are transmitted at around 1300UT This makes me wonder if the voice forecasts are a new addition to the schedule. It may be worth checking 3583.1 / 7431.6 / 9163.1 kHz USB mode at around 1300 UT to see if voice forecasts are there as well. BTW - I have logged maps on both 7431.6 and 9163.1 kHz, as late as October 2023. (Tony Pavick, Hope BC-CAN, wor March 27) KOREA REP OF HLL2 Seoul Meteorological Radio, on 5855.5 kHz. As I mentioned in an earlier posting, I was trying to record VOIRI (a.k.a IRIB and Pars Today) English broadcasts on Nowruz (20 March) using the Uni. Twente SDR receiver with no luck but continued to try every day for the past week. English is scheduled at 15:20-16:20 UT on 9650 kHz and 19:20-20:20 UT on 6040 and 11880 kHz. For the 15:20 UT broadcast on 9650 kHz, there is a carrier but the modu- lation is next to non-existent; i.e. the audio is very weak or not there. Definitely not useable. At 19:20UT, 6040 kHz is vacant as has been report- ed before but VOA in Hausa comes on the air on the frequency later with a good signal. And, 11880 kHz has a good carrier, up to S=9+20dB but very weak if any audio. And the signal is easily swamped by the Voice of Viet- nam on 11885 kHz, with a very good signal and even LSB on 11880kHz doesn't help VOIRI. So, has Iran given up with its SW broadcasts? Do any of its other language broadcasts have a decent signal? Although we in the West (sorry if I sound like Radio Portugal in the good old days) might disagree with what Iran might have to say, it's important that we hear them. Text: Speaker 1 The statement stated that the occupation forces said that four people, including medical teams and journalists, had been arrested and forced to expose them and tortured them during the field investigation. They had used the Rasliyyat Al-Alam site in Lebanon, and deployed soldiers around the site of Jalal Al-Alam Muqaddaf Al-Mutafiya, and had isolated one dead Hungarian man. They had also targeted the site of the Ruwaisat Al-Alam in Al-Kalak, Al-Farjouba, and investigated direct casualties. Al-Maqamar received a deployment of occupation soldiers in the technical surroundings of Al-Zallaid. In Al-Mutiya, while a tank bombed a number of occupation forces' positions on the Lebanese-Palestinian borders in a con- strictive march in Al-Mutala' site. Al-Maqamar Al-Islamiyya confirms in its statements that it carried out attacks in support of the steadfast Palestinian young man in the GazaStrip, and based on his valiant and hono- rable position. Project is required to adopt an American resolution re- garding the Gaza disengagement, after Russia and China used their veto. The Russian delegate to the Security Council, Vassilien Penzia, said that Project is based on open political manipulation by Russia, adding that Russia does not accept that the Council becomes its tool of destruction in West Asia. Details are available to reduce. Speaker 2 A Russian-Chinese double dropped a draft American resolution on a ceasefire in Gaza. The Russian delegate in the Security Council, Vassilien Penzia, confirmed that the draft resolution is Hatto's open po- litical manipulation, and in addition, Russia does not accept that the Council turns into its perpetual tool in the conflict. It is clear that if it adopts the American draft resolution, how it will close the discussion on Chanet Pribse and will release the occupation there. Speaker 3 It can be said that there is a solution in the SecurityCouncil, but the draft resolution does not show that. The negotiations in which the Americans participated incompletely regarding Gaza were focused and di- rected only to procrastinate. Gaza has been destroyed and the American de- legate feels the need for a ceasefire. The American draft resolution is an attempt to make Israel evade the situation. Speaker 2 The American delegate to the Security Council, Linda Tom Screenfeld, said the resolution approved by the Kansar and Hamas on the graves of the exchange deal and expressed her regret at the use of Russia and China for Beto. Speaker 4 I believe that we are close to reaching a ceasefire agreement, but we have only succeeded in some way. I am working with Egypt and the ability of the Secretary-General to reach an immediate and sustainable ceasefire. Speaker 2 The American draft resolution calls for an immediate and su- stainable ceasefire for a period of only six weeks. This is in response to the ongoing international efforts to secure a truce linked to the release of all the remaining families in the raid. The United States ignored the raid's demands to completely stop the war, lift the siege, and bring aid into the Gaza Strip. And what was destroyed by the occupying army will be reconstructed. During his aggression. And making a satisfactory exchange deal for the raid. During the field investigation, the soldiers of the occupation forces were deployed in the vicinity of the Jalal Al-Alam Qaddaf Al-Muttafa'iya site, and a Hungarian man was killed. He also used the Rawisat Al-Alam site in Al-Kafr Hills. (via Zacharias Liangas-GRC, wor March 22) PALESTINE Voice of Palestine, Voice of the Islamic Palestinian Revolution missing. This is a sad thing (again) for the many people in Africa who are far away from local FM relays in the major African cities, and who cannot afford to pay for data usage on their phones in order to connect to BBCWS pro- gramming. An update: Listened to all of my 10-minute clips. There seemed to be a VOA editorial near the top of the hour each hour (except the first hour). At about 21:04 UT, there was a version of the Ukrainian patriotic song "??...", romanized: 'Oi u luzi chervona kalyna' (something like: "Oh, there is a red viburnum in the meadow") in SPANISH ! Most of us have heard various versions of this song since the start of the war but perhaps not in Spanish. When checking on the spelling of the song, I came across this version: Very nice, particularly the portions with brass instruments. The hour con- tinued past 21:06 UT when my recording ended. So not signing off at 21:00 UT according to the supposed schedule. Will extend my recordings to see if there is a consistent s/off time. Slava Ukraini! (Richard Langley-NB-CAN, wor March 15) Comments from the WOR iog: Kai Ludwig, Germany: "Nothing in HFCC so far, and no publicity at the usual places either. "Abriendo Espacios" as programme name is too generic for a web search without further digging. Is this Marti or rather VOA? Perhaps some kind of cooperation, but still one could ask if this is a playout from Miami or Washington. And why not from either Biblis or Lampertheim, which would provide significantly better reception? They keep churning out 5.7 million dollar each year for these meanwhile badly underused facilities. I think I asked already some kind ago what kind of strategy this is, or if they have any beyond "we always did it this way" at all. So no one in Russia and Ukraine will listen to shortwave anymore, but mercenaries from Cuba will? To a sub-standard signal, delivered over almost 9,000 kilometres? Made my day. Kai Ludwig" Bill Tilford, IN: "It wasn't all that far back that Marti was broadcasting DRM to Cuba. They are never given an Oinker Award but have been a worthy candidate for years - an operation in search of a mission. Personally, I think the most plausible explanation for their existence is a place to hide part of the black budget. Just a theory, but a good one methinks" Tony Pavick, BC: "I have a slightly noisy but fairly understandable signal. Discussion with a university professor talking about writing a diary about Ukraine to tell the world about what is happening. This is a really fascinating undertaking. While some may question its effectiveness, the thought of targeting deployed Cuban troops with R Marti in some form where it won't be jammed as at home is intriguing. In a sense this is a bit like Radio Atlantico del Sur and Argentina's Liberty. Tony" USA Re: VOA / R Marti on 17680 kHz Mon-Fri today. They are really struggling today to keep it together. The video was produced by Rick Williford, who was also present. The IBB transmitter facility is located about 20 miles southeast of Green- ville on a plot of approximately 2700 acres. It has 41 antenna arrays. Greenville is the last remaining domestic transmitting facility in the IBB network. It provides transmissions to Cuba, Latin America and Africa for the Voice of America and the Office of Cuba Broadcasting (RadioMarti), and to the eastern seaboard of the United States for Radio Thailand. It was dedicated in 1963 by President John F. Kennedy. In 1941, President Franklin Delano Roosevelt created the Office of War Information. In 1942 - 17 days after the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor - the first broadcast of the Voice of America went on the air in German. Throughout World War II, the VOA 's broadcasts were carried on leased fa- cilities of private shortwave stations in the U.S. Eventually the VOA was placed under the control of the State Department. As the Cold War escalat- ed, Russia began jamming the VOA in 1948. VOA's transmitting facilities were beefed up to cover a worldwide audience and to combat the Russian jamming. This expansion program was called "the RingPlan"and it gave birth to the VOA relay stations in Morocco, Greece, Sri Lanka, the Philippines, Okinawa and North Carolina (which was also known as "Baker East.") Construction of Baker East began in the early 1950's, but the McCarthy in- vestigations caused the abandonment of the facilities in 1953. In 1959, Congress appropriated funds to continue the construction. The plan was for the Greenville facility to be composed of three separate sites - two transmitting and one receiving station. In 1953, President Eisenhower created the U.S.Information Agency, which was tied administratively to the State Department but operated independently with direct presidential over- sight. The U.S. International Broadcasting Act signed by President Clinton brought all of the government's international broadcasting services under the Broadcasting Board of Governors (BBG). In 1998 the USIA was abolished and the International Broadcasting Bureau (IBB) was established. The IBB oversees all civilian international broadcasting, including Radio Free Asia, Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty, the Office of Cuba Broadcasting (Radio and TV Marti), and the Voice of America radio and TV. VOA currently broadcasts in 45 languages to an estimated worldwide audience of 115 million per week. The Greenville transmitter site has nine transmitters - eight 250-kilowatt and one 50-kilowatt that is currently being retrofitted for DRM testing. The station broadcasts over 90 hours per day of programming, 60% of which is for Radio Marti. Twenty-nine employees staff the site 24/7 hrs/d. Greenville was designed as two identical and independent transmitter sites - Site A and Site B. These two sites, near Bear Grass and Black Jack, NC, were fed by the receiving station - Site C - near Farville, NC. Technical advances forced the closure of the receiving site in 1995. In 2005, Site A began to be phased out. It is now mothballed, and only Site B remains on the air. Site B includes antennas designed to reach far-off locations like Prague and Moscow, but the majority of the current transmissions are beamed to Cuba, Latin America and Africa. It airs VOA broadcasts in Creole, English, Hausa and Portuguese to Latin America and West Africa. The BBC uses Green- ville for relay transmissions in English and Spanish to Latin America, and Radio Thailand uses the site to reach the eastern U.S. There are three re- ceive-only TVRO satellite dishes to receive programming. BBC feeds are downlinked from PanAmSat.Eighteen Scientific Atlanta receivers pick up the programs from the three satellite dishes. Orban Optimod audio processors are used. The transmitters at Site B are one Brown Boveri (BBC) 500 kilowatt unit, three Continental 420A 500-kilowatt transmitters, three GE 250 kilowatt units, one AEG Telefunken 500 kilowatt, and one Continental 617 50 kilo- watt unit. All of the 500-kilowatt transmitters are currently being ope- rated at 250 kilowatts. The transmitters are routed to an antenna switch bay. There are 50 miles of transmission lines connecting the transmitters to the antennas. The master control room is the heart of the center. It provides all audio patching, antenna switching and monitoring of the transmission facilities. The transmitters can be divided into two groups - those installed under the 1963 project, and those installed as part of the modernization plan in the 1980's. The GE 250-kilowatt transmitters were part of the original equipment, manufactured in 1961. They have been the "workhorses" of the station, and they still play an important pat in the Greenville operation. The can cover 6-21 MHz and they have been modified various times over the years, including the installation of solid state amplifiers. The Continen- tal 420's were made in the late 1940's and are run at half-power - 250 kW. The Continental 617A was used to relay programs overseas in single side- band. In the mid-1980's, Greenville was selected as a location for testing of different models of modern shortwave transmitters. Four transmitters were purchased from leading manufacturers - an AEG Telefunken and a Brown Boveri, which were full production models; and a Marconi and a Continental model 420B, which were prototypes. The AEG and the BBC are currently in use at Site B. The other two were installed at SiteA, which is mothballed. The BBC and AEG transmitters use pulse step modulation techniques. The 41 antennas are located in an arch around the transmitter building. They cover from 3 to 305 degrees azimuth, although the most used azimuths are 90 to 236 degrees, from Africa to CentralAmerica. There are 16 curtain antennas which operate from 9.6-11.7 MHz, 20 rhombics which operate from 6.1-26 MHz and from 3 to 286 degrees, two log periodics which operate from 4-10 MHz for communications and program relays that are inactive, one TCI curtain antenna that was originally installed for testing for the global IBB network, and two simple dipoles which operate on 6 MHz at 10 and 174 degree azimuths. Three-phase commercial power is supplied by the local electrical company, and there's a diesel generator which can be used in case of a commercial power failure. The site has a complete machine shop for the fabrication of small parts. Greenville maintains a large parts inventory, including many high-power tubes and capacitors that are becoming obsolete. There is a major water conditioning system for transmitter cooling requirements. After the video, Adil Mina of Continental Electronics pointed out that the director of the Office of War Information in 1942 later went on to found Continental in Dallas. Walt Konetsco mentioned that "there's some interest in the B Site for WWV, because they're looking for a facility on the East Coast." The A and B sites are identical in terms of transmitters and antennas. Konetsco said that tours of the A Site are tightly controlled since 9/11, but exceptions may be made for international broadcasters who make advance arrangements. The Delano (California), Kavala (Greece) and Tangier IBB transmitter sites were recently closed. IBB still has relay stations in Sao Tome (a small island off the west coast of Africa), Botswana, Kuwait (which is in a buildup operation with emphasis on the Middle East), Sri Lanka, Thailand, the Philippines, the Mariana Islands and Germany, although the German site has been decreased. For more information on the Fest, visit: wrote: We have TWO SLOTS STILL OPEN and we have yet to hear from anyone willing to take on the annual PIRATE RADIO session that has been a part of every Fest up until this year. The 37th "Winter" SWL Fest will be held two months later this year on May 10 to 11, 2024. By moving the dates to a warmer time of year, we're hoping that we now can reintroduce the in-person Fest while maintaining Zoom access for those who can't or don't want to travel or be in a meeting / convention environment. So consider this edition something of an experiment. The Fest forums are still the centerpiece of the event where knowledgeable presenters conduct sessions on radio-related (SW, MW, amateur, LW, etc.) matters during which they share their expertise with and enthusiasm over a favorite topic or activity. Doing this over the ZOOM platform as well as in-person will likely attract a worldwide audience — and keep open this opportunity to potential presenters worldwide. If you wish to be a part of the 37th Winter SWL Fest by presenting a forum — whether by Zoom or in-person — please contact me at the e-mail address below and pitch your topic. We'd like to have these in hand by March 21, 2024 and will return an answer to your proposal almost immediately. RESPOND ONLY TO ME PERSONALLY VIA DIRECT E-MAIL , NOT BY JUST HITTING THE RETURN BUTTON. (Sorry for shouting but I needed to be sure to get your attention to this.)
