Here is a summary of the recent closure of the Kurdistan national target radio station 'Denge Gel'. { CLANDESTINE } 'Radyoya Denge Gel' has brought its 23-year broadcasting journey to an end. The radio station began its journey in 2002 under the name 'Radyoya Denge Mezopotamya', continued under the names 'Denge Kurdi- stan' and 'Denge Welat', and finally, as 'Denge Gel'. Adopting a broadcasting line based on a paradigm of women's liberation, ecology, and democracy, the radio was not just a music player but also a political and cultural school for people. Reaching its audience with programs blended with politics, literature, history, and songs, 'Radyoya Denge Gel' left behind a great legacy. Thank- ing the people of Kurdistan, it ended its 23-year journey with the Kurdish anthem "Ey Reqip". Denge Gel ended its broadcasting life after completing its mission,Mustafa Rezan said, "Despite its shortcomings and limitations, it reached an im- portant threshold. Unfortunately, with technological development, the mis- sion of radio is also diminishing. Digital media is developing, and pub- lishing and broadcasting are evolving accordingly." (ANF News via Pedro de Castro-Brazil and Paul Walker-AK) Many SWLs may have been surprised today (Dec 2). Between 11500 and 11550 kHz, there is radio silence. Neither 'Denge Gel' nor a Turkish jamming station could be heard. 'Radio Denge Gel' has ended its 23-year broadcast- ing history. This was reported by the Kurdish news agency Ajansa Nuceyan a Firate (ANF). The station began in 2001 as 'Denge Mezopotamya' (until 2012), then broadcast under the name 'Denge Kurdistane' until 2017, and finally as 'Denge Welat'. In 2023, it finally became 'Denge Gel'. The station, which played a cat-and mouse game with the Turkish authorities on shortwave, aimed its programmes on politics, literature, history and songs primarily at its Kurdish listeners. The programmes were produced in Denderleeuw near Brussels, Belgium. Now the station has ended its 23-year, eventful history on shortwave - closing with the Kurdish national anthem 'Ey Reqip'. (via Thomas Kamp-Germany DF5JL via groups.io via Walter Eibl- Germany) In recent years 'Denge Gel' had been broadcast on a variable frequency around 11500-11550 kHz probably via Yerevan Gavar site in Armenia. Broad- casts have been shadowed jamming from a TRT transmitter carrying Turkish military music and speeches of President Erdogan. The closure appears to be part of an ongoing peace agreement between Turkey and Kurdish oppo- nents. "After three decades, some special thanks are due for this column." The research was based on continuous input from, among others (this list is not exhaustive), Hansjoerg Biener, Wolfgang Bueschel and Wolfgang Lill in Germany, Kim Andrew Elliott and Glenn Hauser in the USA, as well as Ivo Ivanov in Bulgaria. We must remember those who are no longer alive: Noel Green, the English railway worker, whose childhood also in-cluded nights spent in the cellar during bombing raids; Bernt Erfjord from the Norwegian Broadcasting Corporation NRK (his com- ment after receiving a recording of the last broadcast on shortwave: "Sounds really terrible, well, I have it in 15 kHz quality...") Olle Alm, whom one might have expected to be in the control room of Sveriges Radio given his expertise, but who was simply a translator and returned from central Sweden to his parents' home in the far south of the country after retiring. Mikhail Timofeyev, a broadcasting technician from Saint Petersburg, who knew the times of the Soviet Union from per-sonal experience and walked several kilometers to work until one morning he suffered a heart attack. Inevitably unmentioned are the cases of broken contacts; be it typical "ghosting" (which reinforced the impression of actual attempts from the international broadcasting landscape to be harnessed to certain agendas) or simply retirement. The latter leads to September 23, 2000, when this information was first published online (in 1996, as unimaginable as that may seem today, it ac- tually started solely on the radio - and was recorded by telephone). One of the very first news items on the internet was precisely this one: "After almost 20 years, Radio Nederland Wereldomroep is discontinuing its media program "Media Network", which has been a fixture in the internatio- nal broadcasting landscape, and will only maintain the internet service that has been produced alongside the program since 1995." The original link was to this page Of course, back then nobody suspected what would happen in Hilversum twelve years later, namely the clo-sure of the entire international radio station. Also in the envelope was a letter of greeting along with two stickers and an updated frequency schedule. The letter wished me a Merry Christmas - a bit late to receive that but the postmark on the envelope was 22-Dec- 2025 from Springfield MO so fair enough. I also note that the address at the bottom of the letter was in Merizo (Guam) but the sender address on the envelope was in Cary, NC (USA) so I presume that the mail went from Guam to the USA before being mailed out to me. I am glad to say that the radio, as well as the listening location, came up trumps (as did the weather) and I got a very good signal from which I made a 6 minute audio recording (in lieu of programme details - I don't speak a word of Korean) that I have sent by email attached to a reception report. I did include some details about what I heard during the last 10 minutes of the transmission as well as the words of the closing ID which confirmed that what I heard was indeed KTWR Guam. Although the trip to get from my home to the listening spot in question is fairly long (about 75 minutes drive, followed by 25 minutes hillwalking when I have parked) the location is worth the trip: 211m / 592ft above sea level and very scenic with nothing likely to obstruct the signal - or the view - for a minimum of 15 to 20 miles in most directions. Radio Room. Pages from the history of Powerful Radio - Transmission of Radio Rossii on 999 kHz frequency {... acc WRTH 2026 1000 kW via Grigoriopol Maiac on Ukrainian border, 19-01 UT ? ... ed.} The public is actively discussing the new broadcast schedule from PRTC on various resources. Radio Russia's broadcast on 999 kHz is particularly unpopular. They say there are not enough hours. And only during the day. In connection with the negative feedback, here is some information to ponder: 1. Let me remind you. From the point of view of Vesti and Radio Russia, their programmes are not broadcast on medium wave. They have not ordered and do not order this service, and therefore do not pay for broadcasting. 2. However, broadcasting does exist and is financially supported by FGUP RTRS. Accordingly, the transmitters operate for as many hours as the or- ganisation's budget allows. Appeals such as ‘But how can this be, it's the country's main radio station’ are inappropriate in this case. I would like to remind you that, from the point of view of officials, long-distance radio broadcasting is not needed by anyone. Please read the materials on the group's wall. 3. It is winter outside right now. The time for medium-wave retransmission of programmes from the PRTC since 1 January has been set so as to make the most effective use of the transmitter cooling system. If both transmitters only operate in the evening and at night, the pumps will have to run idle and heat water during the day. If this is not done, the cooling system may freeze. And then there will be no broadcasts at all. 4. Let me remind you: the broadcasts from the PRTC are not primarily in- tended for Russia. According to the Ministry of Information Technology and Communications, there is no need for medium wave broadcasting within the country. The main task of the Pridnestrovian Radio and Television Centre is to broadcast to foreign countries. Remember the geographical location of the PRTC. Even if the transmitter operates during the day, it is still abroad, no matter how you look at it. The very fact that our programmes are broadcast on medium wave is, in a sense, a feat on the part of RTRS. From 2014 to the present day. Appre- ciate this and be content with what you have. 5. And if that's not enough for you, no problem. We'll collect 117,000 roubles and organise one hour of broadcasting every evening on the short- wave band. Maybe someone has some spare cash lying around ... Radiocomunicatii SA, Romania's state-owned broadcast organization. Modernization of Romania's aging broadcast communications system marks a critical step forward for Romania and its population, bringing the country up to date with the solid-state analogue technology favoured in Western Europe. Harris' end-to-end radio and television solution also provides S.N. Radiocomunicatii SA with a clear path to the digital future. Phase 1 of the three-phase project, which is providing 100 per cent radio coverage throughout Romania, was completed in just 20 months instead of the anticipated four-and-one-half years. Harris accelerated the project by dedicating the additional engineering and technical resources needed to establish nationwide radio coverage before Romania's election in November 2004. Harris supplied 28 low-power (10-kW to 50-kW) mediumwave txs, eight high- power (200-kW and 400-kW) mediumwave txs and 106 FM radio txs for local coverage as well as longer distances of difficult terrain at sites throughout Romania. The range and diversity of txs was essential to ensure 100 per cent nationwide radio broadcast coverage for Romania's regional network and two national networks across urban areas and vast stretches of rural communities often divided by the Carpathian mountains. The end-to-end txion solution also included antenna systems, microware links for resource sharing, engineering, installation, training and commissioning sces. In addition, the first of many high- and low-power television txs and transposers were installed. The television installations begin upgrades to Romania's television txion infrastructure, which will be expanded and completed during the remainder of the modernization programme. Furthermore, three control and monitoring networks will reduce operational costs at each station facility by enabling the remote monitoring of all radio and television txion equipment from four regional headquarters. Until now, it has been conservatively estimated that the country's aging broadcast technology did not reach up to 40 per cent of Romania's 22.3 million. With the completion of the radio phase of the modernization project, the country now enjoys 100 per cent radio coverage at a higher fidelity and lower cost. With the inclusion of new RDS capabilities, public radio stations can be received and retained on the move throughout the country. Romania also has the ability to reach Romanians living in other European countries with the use of a Harris longwave AM tx. [Brasov Brod LW 153 kHz, wb.]. After a brief hiatus in late November and early December 2025, there was a change of announcers at Radio Exterior de Espana's English language ser- vice, which currently broadcasts Wednesdays at 1100 UT (on line only) and 2300 UT (best for the Midwest so far is 12030kHz at that hour, but if you are feeling lucky, you might give 9690 kHz, which carries Spanish at other hours, a try.) The new announcer team is Daniel Rioboo and Alba Cuellar, who are very per- sonable if somewhat heavily accented at times (a thing sometimes noted about yours truly when he is speaking on air in German or Spanish.) Their maiden episode was December 10. If you listen to the morning live- stream, the first four minutes are Noticias en espanol before English starts. Both hours provide a national/international news segment in Eng- lish. This being a weekly now, I do not yet discern titled segments beyond the news, but the December 10 program had an interesting extended discus- sion of swine flu and another about Spanish cinema, especially animation. The December 17th broadcast had an emphasis on international tensions (especially the US vs. Venezuela) and Australia’s new social media re- strictions for youngsters. I am typing this after listening to the Decem- ber 24 stream, which covered a Spanish non-profit organization, Envera, that works with people with disabilities (especially intellectual ones) and Christmas decorations in Spanish cities. It would be nice if this appeared more often than weekly, since the con- tent is curated well thus far. But better weekly than never. From F_Book, Alex Miatlikov-Dnipro-UKR got this schedule, all via UAE site {of Abu Dhabi Media owned but ENC operated A'Dhabbaya unit ed.}, which correlates with typical off frequenciness: "Radio Farda is restarting on Saturday as follows: 0530-0800 15430 0800-1200 15110 1200-1500 15310 1500-1700 13755" All via Dhabbaya, the UAE relay site, 250 kW, 35 degrees No jamming audible, and IIRC, strangely enough, Iran did not bother to jam the original R. Farda. Richard Langley noted two carriers until 1414 UT, jamming now ? Nothing else scheduled. "There are two carriers. One at 15310 kHz -0.8 Hz and a stronger one at +150 Hz or so." (Glenn Hauser-OK-USA, wor Jan 10) The familiar sound of the Iranian bubble jammers was observed at my loca- tion today on 15430 kHz at 09:10 UT, long after Farda had signed off this frequency. Was gone when I checked again at 09:30 UT. 15110 kHz is noted at 10:22 with heterodyne (carrier on 15109.85 kHz which is subject to frequent breaks of a few seconds at a time). They seem to be having trouble in keeping the jammer on the air. The bubbling sound was noted starting just before 10:30 UT. The signal was ENC Dhabayya relay center is weak here in the U.K. so the 35 degree antenna must be highly directional. Back in the late 1990s a number of low power transmitters (10/20/50 kW) were installed at the Kamalabad site, presumably for jamming purposes. The last time I heard the Iranian bubble jammers on HF was in 2013 aimed at blocking Israel's Persian service. I expect that the jamming equipment is kept in standby, but probably needs some maintenance. Farda on HF was never jammed in recent years as the programming consisted almost entirely of popular music. The Iranian authorities were probably of the opinion that the audience on short wave was minimal anyway. With the current unrest in the country I would guess that people are resorting to all possible ways of hearing the latest news and many would be turning to short wave radio now. {later} So according to info on this Webpage, translating from Persian and converting from local times listed to UTC, the schedule reads: 12005 04:00-05:00 15430 05:00-08:00 15110 08:00-12:00 15310 12:00-14:00 13755 14:00-16:00 12005 16:00-17:00 (Alan Holder, G4ZBH Isle of Wight, U.K., wor Jan 11) UAE {Czech Republic non} 9820 kHz Radio Prague Int'l, Russian Sce, via WRN of Abu Dhabi Media owned ENC A'Dhabbaya txion relay site. e-QSL: 19:00-19:30 UT, Nov 21, 2025. "... 'Echos in the Ether' 2026-Jan-04 - 9455 kHz.
