In this broadcast, Herbie the Fish announced that he was retired after 45 years of professional life. He now has plenty of time - and his only current project is SuperClan Radio. SuperClan Radio, which has been broadcast on 'Channel 292' for years, is a hobby project separate from Visser's other professional activities.Follow- ing the SuperClan broadcast of Jan 4, 2026, Herbert Vissers spoke about the death of David Bowie exactly ten years ago. Back then, he organised a digital memorial station. Likewise on this 10 January from 09:00 h until 15:00 h UTC, only music by David Bowie would be played to commemorate the 10th anniversary of his death. And the other two SRV-750 that Tesla Hloubetin delivered to Romania were of course the 1500 kW on 855 kHz that after dark already 120 km south of Berlin-Britz drowned out the transmitter there completely. The nominal powers in Romania that did not look like Czech equipment were the 1200 kW on 153 kHz and especially the even 1000 kW on 1053 kHz. Pro- bably Soviet equipment there instead, like Buran or the more recent Tayfun. Anyone remembering 1053 kHz relaying Radio Moldova, with a characteristic sound that suggested the use of defective Ballempfang, whatever it may be called in English? (i.e. VHF as source) By the way, there has been this weird article about "Soviet Union launch- ing colour TV late" (where did they get the idea from?): Then check out how late it was introduced in Romania and be surprised, unless you are al- ready aware of the horrendous circumstances there. I still remember the sports magazine of GDR TV apologizing for RomanianTV feeding the following handball match in B&W only, because after 1980 it was outright impossible to avoid such a remark. Outgoing BBC director-general Tim Davie has said the UK should be "spend- ing double" the amount of money on the corporation's World Service. The 58-year-old said further spending is required to keep up with China and Russia, who he said are spending billions on their equivalent ser- vices, while being quizzed by MPs on the Public Accounts Committee on Thursday. Asked what percentage of BBC cuts had impacted the World Service, he re- plied: "In cash terms, in line with the rest of BBC and its cuts and pres- sures, (it is) not particularly worse than the rest of the BBC, so not (discriminating) against the World Service... "You know my view, which is I think the UK should be spending double the amount it spends on this service, without question. "I mean, if you look at what China and Russia are doing, six to eight billion, I think it is absolutely paramount that we invest in what I think is a unique and precious UK strategic asset. "I care about that enormously, and I think it needs investment, but in terms of the licence fee construct and how much you ask from (households), I mean, I'm going around the country all the time, household budgets are under enormous pressure." In January 2025, it was revealed BBC World Service was to axe 130 jobs as it looked to save around £6 million for the next financial year. Davie continued: "For us to ask for more for the World Service from the licence fee, I think, is untenable, and for me to announce, 'I'm sorry, you won't be getting Radio 4 or all the other things we do, but we'll be playing money to the World Service', was not something we could do. "So the short answer to your question, keep the cash where it was, don't diminish the World Service, even though you could argue, in terms of this pure investment with regards to the UK licence fee payer, you might want to do that, I didn't want to do that. "And don't cut the World Service more than the rest of news and all the other things, because we were facing a 30% over the last decade, 30% de- cline in real terms, in terms of our income, that's what we've tried to do." Cost-saving measures at the World Service saw it close posts in the UK and internationally as well as cutting roles in BBC Monitoring, a divi- sion which reports and analyses news from media around the world. The cuts came after financial pressure amid rising inflation and the pre- vious two-year freeze in the licence fee, and projected its total deficit would increase to £492 million for the 2024/25 financial year. It also followed the BBC World Service being given a funding boost as part of the autumn budget to protect the corporation's existing foreign language services. The BBC also revealed in its annual plan for 2025/26 that its annual in- come had fallen by £1 billion in real terms compared with 2010, in March last year. Casey Cooper-Fiske, PA Senior Entertainment Reporter, Thu, 8 Jan 2026. via Mike Cooper-GA-USA, wor Jan 14) U.K. 100th anniversary of Rugby Radio Station. Messages have been sent across the globe to mark the 100th anniversary of a radio site where the world's first transatlantic phone call was made. The New Year's Day broadcasts were made by Rugby Amateur Transmitting So- ciety (RATS ) from the former Rugby Radio Station. The site first opened in 1926 inside what is now a Grade II- listed build- ing, just east of the Warwickshire town. A total of 57 radio transmitters covered an area of 1,600 acres but the site closed in 2002 and it now forms part of Houlton Secondary School. The voice and morse code broadcasts reached America, Canada, Brazil and all of Europe, said Steve Jones from the society, but failed to reach other parts of the world due to atmospheric conditions. "But we certainly spread our wings, it was absolutely fantastic to be transmitting from Rugby Radio Station again," he said. A huge hall houses radio telephony equipment on tables and fixed to the walls as well as on a balcony. The station became the UK's base for radio telephony. The society had erected an antenna at the school site, allowing the broad- casts to take place. "When the radio station first opened it had an initial message that it sent out and we compiled a message which was part of what was first trans- mitted on the first day 100 years ago," said Mr Jones. "After the broadcast we then took calls from radio amateurs from all over the place back into us," he added. Rugby's role in the first telephone call across the Atlantic. Rugby Radio Station became the UK's base for radio telephony and made the first transatlantic voice transition in January 1927 which was sent to Houlton, in Maine, in the United States. It also sent the time signal, maritime and submarine communications and played key roles in World War Two. It could broadcast a message so powerful that it would be picked up by almost every ship at sea. After closing, part of the building that was used to house the transmit- ter was saved and developed into the school. There are parts of the school that have remnants of the historic building. Other events to mark the anniversary include an exhibition at the town's art gallery and museum later in the year. "It's exciting times for the amateur radio community and the local Warwickshire community at large," added Mr Jones. BBC by Vanessa Pearce. (Chris Greenway-UK, BrDXC-UK iogr Jan 13) Hi Dave - re your request for pics with both Ottringham and Droitwich on the dial - in Part 3 of Chris Greenway's article "BBC on Longwave" we in- cluded a pic of a (Spanish?) dial with Droitwich on Longwave and Ottring- ham on medium wave (but date of receiver unknown). It was published in the April 2024 edition of 'Communication' printed magazine. I think the photo originated here: (pic 4 of 13) Chris's "BBC on Longwave" was serialised in eight parts in 'Communication' between Febr and Sept 2024 (based on his original X/Twitter thread from 2023 and 2024) and Ottringham was mentioned in a number of parts. Back in November 1992's 'Communication' Nick Rank wrote a 2-page article "BBC Ottringham" but this didn't include any pics. 73 Alan (Alan Pennington-UK, BrDXC-UK iogr Jan 14) Re: LF info request. Also in Pt 6 I will be covering the case of the TH537V final RF o/p tube in the B6042 present LF transmitters at Droitwich. I wonder of any of you have any press cuttings of the furore re these tubes concerning their perceived rareness and what horrible things can happen when they fail on site? I have seen a report that there will be a power surge when they fail and it will bring the 700' masts down! I'd like to get in as much press daftness as possible... The previous 4 are on bbceng as per the link, scroll down to the bottom. To conclude the series it would be fitting to have a pic of a vintage RX glass dial that shows both Ottringham and Droitwich, has anybody seen one in print? Deserving of scrutiny is the boasting this week by the self-proclaimed acting chief executive officer of the US Agency for Global Media (USAGM), Kari Lake, that audiences in Iran and Venezuela are being effectively served amid the current geo-political crises. Lake and DOGE, ten months ago, effectively destroyed US international broadcasting. Everyone at the Voice of America was sent home (where nearly all remain), all contracts were canceled for wire services and satellite transponders, USAGM transmitter sites were mothballed and Congressionally-approved funds for Radio Free Europe / Radio Liberty and Radio Free Asia throttled. What has been hastily brought back, as a claimed "statutory minimum" by Lake, resembles a Potemkin village. She has ignored a federal judge's order to restore VOA. There's a few daily minutes of VOA Korean program on shortwave from the Philippines. VOA and RFA used to broadcast in Korean from dusk to dawn using mediumwave transmitters in South Korea that cover most of the penin- sula. [RFA has just announced it is reviving Korea coverage without her cooperation.] A snippet of Dari and Pashto also is beamed to Afghanistan via shortwave from the Middle East. Previously VOA's broadcast 24/7 hrs/d via satellite TV into Afghanistan and garnered a significant audience. A few stories are posted online in Mandarin Chinese, but the hours of satellite TV programming have not resumed. Lake contends that the audiences in Venezuela are being reached by the Radio Marti transmissions, a service which targets Cuba. La Voz de Ameri- ca (VOA in Spanish), which had a significant audience in Latin America before Lake shut it down, has not been restored. Its website is frozen in time at March 14, 2025. Radio Farda (RFE / RL's service for Iran) is back on shortwave on leased transmitters and on medium wave from Kuwait, although the signals are be- ing heavily jammed, presumably by the Iranian security apparatus. Lake, meantime, is feuding with RFE's president, Steve Capus, because she's de- manding the grantee (which is not a government agency) align its messaging with Trump's foreign policy. USAGM's cumulative efforts in Farsi, including VOA's Persian News Network, appear to be under the direction of someone who has been compared to a Trump PR machine. Ali Javanmardi even went on air and made explicit that what is broadcast under his and Kari Lake's supervision will follow the current U.S. administration's policy on Iran. Some recent VOA content in Mandarin was MAGA propaganda praising Trump, not balanced journalism. VOA's standards & practices editor was among those placed on paid administrative leave early last year and has since accepted a similar post at a domestic news network. Lake, who twice failed to win statewide office as a Republican in Ari- zona, reportedly has her eye on a political future in Iowa. Meanwhile, she has repeatedly expressed her contempt for the US InternationalBroadcasting Act of 1994 intended to prevent U.S. government officials from interfering in the editorial decisions of either VOA or RFE / RL. {more US international broadcasting items ...} The U.S. Congress has reached a bipartisan agreement to allocate approxi- ately $653 million to fund the U.S. Agency for Global Media (USAGM), the federal agency that oversees international broadcasters including the Voice of America (VOA), Radio Free Asia (RFA), Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty (RFE/RL), and others. Lawmakers from both the House of Representatives and the Senate reached an agreement as part of a broader bipartisan spending bill released on Sunday. According to the spending plan text, the bulk of the allocation, roughly $643 million, will go toward USAGM's international broadcasting opera- ions, with nearly $10 million earmarked for capital improvements such as broadcast infrastructure and distribution platforms. The congressional decision marks a clear rejection of the previous admini- tration's push to defund and ultimately dismantle USAGM, which had been championed by former President Donald Trump and his advisors. Trump issued an executive order in early 2025, directing the agency to slash operations and eliminate staff. As a result, thousands of VOA employees were placed on administrative leave, and federal grants to RFE/RL and RFA were abrupt- ly cancelled. Supporters of the funding deal have described the congressional action as a necessary defense of press freedom and democratic values. Senator Brian Schatz (D-Hawaii) highlighted that funding cuts could undermine key news services in critical regions, warning that "authoritarian regimes will fill the vacuum if U.S. international media is weakened." On the other side, some critics, including voices aligned with the former administration, have framed USAGM as a costly government enterprise. In a statement responding to the bill, Kari Lake, senior advisor to USAGM ap- pointed by the Trump team, expressed "disappointment" at Congress allocat- ing significantly more money than what the administration had requested, asserting that the agency can still "advance the president's message" without the higher funding levels. The funding agreement arrives amidst ongoing legal battles over USAGM's operations. Following the 2025 executive order that triggered layoffs and funding freezes, multiple lawsuits were filed by journalists, contractors, and media advocates. At various points, federal judges ordered the resump- tion of funding and rehiring of employees; other court rulings placed stays on these reinstatements, leaving VOA and related outlets in a state of uncertainty throughout much of the past year. The bipartisan spending bill, including the USAGM funding language, still requires final passage in both houses of Congress and must be signed into law. While the Republican-controlled House and Democratic Senate have previously cooperated on avoiding government shutdowns, political tensions over unrelated policy areas could influence the timing and content of the final package. Once enacted, the measure will provide breathing room for VOA, RFE / RL, RFA, and related services to continue international programming and re- build operational capacities trimmed during 2025. Radio Farda's audio stopped some seconds after 07:59 UT but the jammer continued to the end of the recording at 08:05 UT so its uncertain when it shut off. Interestingly, the frequency of the single hetrodyne drifted gradually from about 312 Hz down to 248 Hz at the end of the recording. 2026-01-13 05:30:00 capture: AM 15430 (DHA) FRD FARS 2026-01-15 07:59:59 capture: AM 15430 (DHA) FRD FARS (Richard Langley-NB-CAN, wor Jan 14) Re: More on Radio Farda. 7500 and 15615 kHz These frequencies remind of the former Iran Internatio- nal transmissions. So it appears that now the cheaper 100 kW option from Dushanbé Tajikistan and/or Yerevan Gavar Armenia is being tried, with which RFE/RL would use up their remaining money less quickly. And see: (Kai Ludwig-D, wor Jan 14) "The familiar sound of the Iranian bubble jammers was observed at my lo- cation today on 15430 kHz at 09:10 UT, long after Farda had signed off this frequency. Was gone when I checked again at 09:30 UT. 15110 kHz is noted at 10:22 UT with heterodyne (carrier on 15109.85 kHz which is subject to frequent breaks of a few seconds at a time). They seem to be having trouble in keeping the jammer on the air. The bubbling sound was noted starting just before 10:30 UT. The signal was ENC Dhabayya UAE, is weak here in the U.K. so the 35 degree antenna must be highly directio- nal. Back in the late 1990s a number of low power transmitters (10/20/50 kW) were installed at the Kamalabad site, presumably for jamming purposes. The last time I heard the Iranian bubble jammers on HF was in 2013 aimed at blocking Israel's Persian service. I expect that the jamming equipment is kept in standby, but probably needs some maintenance. US Radio Farda on HF was never jammed in recent years as the programming consisted almost entirely of popular music. The Iranian authorities were probably of the opinion that the audience on short wave was minimal any- way. With the current unrest in the country I would guess that people are resorting to all possible ways of hearing the latest news and many would be turning to short wave radio now. The arrangement is basically the same again, Abu Dhabi during daytime and ENC Woofferton-UK evening / night, just with other frequencies, as shown at Probably this time they choose to not go on air around the clock (perhaps because not much money is left) but only between 0400 and 1700 UT or some- thing like that. At least right now there is no carrier on 9515 kHz.
