Today Saturday February 14, 2026, HCJB Japan will broadcast a special pro- gram for shortwave listeners, produced by the Japan Shortwave Club (JSWC). Program: JSWC Shonan Meeting. This broadcast features interviews with JSWC members recorded during the "JSWC Shonan Meeting" held in Kamakura, south of Tokyo, on January 18, 2026. The program offers insights into current shortwave listening acti- vities in Japan and perspectives from active DXers. Broadcast on Frequency 17650 kHz; February 14, 2026; time at 2230-2300 UT. Transmitter site Kununurra, Western Australia. Power 75 kW, at beam target azimuth 5 degrees. Transmission provider 'Reach Beyond Australia'. A repeat broadcast will follow on February 15, 2026, from 1100-1130 UT on 15460 kHz. GROK: Here is a detailed English summary of the entire shortwave broad- cast transcript Overview of the Broadcast. The program is a Japanese- language broadcast of HCJB via Reach Beyond Australia, transmitted on shortwave. It begins with standard station identification announcements from 'Reach Beyond Australia', followed by details of the Japanese ser- vice schedule: Morning broadcast: 7:30 AM Japan time on 17650 kHz. Evening repeat: 8:00 PM Japan time on 15460 kHz. The presenter explains that longtime producer Kazuo Ozaki passed away in September {2025}, and the program is now being continued in cooperation with his family and the Yodobashi Association. The main content of this episode consists of recorded interviews from a Japan Shortwave Club (JSWC) meeting held on January 18 near Ofuna station in Kamakura. Interviews with Japan Shortwave Club Members. A series of members intro- duce themselves, describe their equipment, and discuss listening habits. The interviews reveal several key themes: 1. Equipment and Antennas. Many members use high-quality receivers and antennas, including: Wellbrook ALA1530 series loop antennas; Icom IC-R8600, IC-R75, IC-705 receivers. JRC NRD series receivers (NRD-545, NRD-515, NRD-535D, etc.) AOR AR-5000. Sony portable shortwave radios (ICF-SW7600GR, ICF-SW1000T, etc.) KiwiSDR remote receivers. Some listeners operate sophisticated rooftop installations, while others rely on balcony loops, longwire antennas, or portable radios used outdoors. 2. Direct Listening vs. Remote SDR. Several members compare: Direct over-the-air reception. Remote SDR listening via the internet. One member listens about two-thirds directly and one-third remotely, pre- ferring traditional reception "as long as it remains enjoyable." Others increasingly rely on remote SDR due to local noise. 3. Increasing Urban Radio Noise. A recurring theme is rising man-made noise (QRM); Inverter noise from air conditioners. Elevator interference. Power lines. General urban electromagnetic pollution. City dwellers report severe reception difficulties. One listener frequent- ly takes pocket radios to parks (such as near Ueno Park) to escape interference. Another reports dramatically better reception at the beach resort, where noise is nearly zero. Conversely, one rural listener notes that automobile ignition noise has decreased compared to earlier decades. 4. Changing DX Activity. Several members admit they are no longer as active in DXing as before. Some now mainly listen to Japanese domestic broadcasts rather than chas- ing distant international stations. Others still scan bands in the early morning or late evening, though propagation conditions have declined on higher bands (e.g., 19 meters). One member mentions receiving Voice of Turkey in Tatar for the first time. Solar activity is discussed briefly. One member notes that very early morning reception (around 5 AM) is often poor, improving after 6 AM. 5. Amateur Radio Overlap. Some members are also licensed amateur radio operators and use transceivers (e.g. IC-705, IC-9100M) for shortwave broad cast listening as well. 6. Living Conditions and Practical Constraints. Apartment living limits antenna options. Balcony direction determines reception patterns. Rooftop installations are often impossible. One member living in a century-old wooden house has reduced antenna height due to lightning risk and mentions rural wildlife problems (raccoons, tanuki, rodents), illustrating the practical realities of maintaining outdoor antennas. Broader Discussion Topics. After the interviews, the program summarizes additional discussion topics from the meeting. 1. Decline of Radio Ownership in Japan. A major topic is the sharp decline in radio ownership. According to a May 2025 survey by Japan's Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications: Overall household radio ownership: 37.7 % Over age 65: over 50 % 20s: only 6.3 % 30s: 13.6 % 40s: 26.7 % The 6.3 % figure for people in their 20s is described as "shocking." The presenter notes that a similar trend has been reported in the United States. Young people may still listen to FM in cars, but many no longer know how to tune a radio or search frequencies. 2. Teaching Radio to Students. One club member, a high school geography teacher, uses Radio Garden in class to demonstrate global radio stations. He explains the difference between internet radio and real shortwave re- ception using antennas. However, modern students show little interest. Ten years ago, some students would ask questions after class; now almost none do. This reflects a broader generational shift away from radio culture. QSL Information. The Japan Shortwave Club offers a QSL card for correct reception reports. Reports can be sent via: E-mail: Postal mail to the JSWC QSL Department Kamakura. Specific return postage requirements are explained in detail. The 2026 QSL design will feature the Tanabata Festival in Sendai JP. Closing - The broadcast concludes with: Repetition of broadcast frequen- cies and times. Invitation for reception reports and listener feedback. A blessing and farewell message. Final station identification from 'Reach Beyond Australia'. Overall Themes of the Program. This broadcast serves as: A tribute to a deceased program producer. A snapshot of contemporary Japanese shortwave enthusiasts. A technical discussion of equipment and reception challenges. A reflection on the aging demographic of radio listeners. A commentary on the cultural decline of traditional radio. It captures a community maintaining a traditional hobby in the face of technological change, urban interference, and generational disengagement. Checking my ancient log books, I see that my 7th recorded log of a SW sta- tion after I got my Knight Kit Span Master working was VLX9 in February 1964. I think I still have a QSL card for that logging. Back in the day, I also logged VLI6 from Sydney on 6090 kHz, VLH9 from Melbourne on 9680 kHz, and VLT4 from Port Moresby on 4890 kHz. All these from my house in a suburb of Toronto. Also logged Radio Wewak on 3335 kHz and Radio Rabaul on 3385 kHz. (Richard Langley-NB-CAN, wor Febr 16) Re: ABC Radio move to FM signals the end of an era for Perth listeners. VLW9 and VLX9 both used 9610 kHz. Was the most distant SWBC for me in Texas. Decent signal around our local sunrise. IIRC VLW was a 10 kW transmitter and VLX was 50 kW. The latter was desig- nated as VLX15 on (I think) 15425 kHz during local days, moving to 31 me- ters at night. VLW used a 49 meter frequency at night as VLW6. 6140 kHz or thereabouts ? I'd have to dig up some old copies of the WRTH. (Stephen Luce-Houston-TX-USA, wor Febr 16) BELARUS Amateur radio operators face the death penalty: found and forwarded by Ingo, OE2IKN. In Belarus, the government is currently cracking down on amateur radio operators with exceptional severity. There have been a number of arrests recently. The Belarus regime is even threatening some of those affected with the death penalty. Christian Kahle, January 22, 2026. Alleged spies. According to state media, independent exile media, and the Belarusian human rights organization Viasna, at least seven people have been arrested, three of whom are said to be facing the death penalty. This is reported by the US magazine ‘404media’. The accused are charged with “intercepting state secrets” via amateur radio equipment. Observers speak of an unprecedented attack on a hobby that is normally apolitical but has always been viewed with suspicion by authoritarian re- gimes. The arrests were announced on state television last week. It was reported that the men were part of a network of more than 50 amateur radio operators. They are charged with espionage and high treason. Security forces are also said to have seized more than 500 devices. TV reports claimed that the accused had used radio technology to spy on the movements of state aircraft. However, no evidence was presented to support these allegations. According to state television, there are links to the Belarusian Federa- tion of Radio Amateurs and Radio Sportsmen (BFRR), an association that has been active for years and organizes competitions, training courses, and meetings. Journalists' inquiries to the organization have so far gone unanswered. The case is causing a stir internationally. On the Reddit platform, Belarusian radio amateur Siarhei Besarab appealed to the global community for help. He spoke of a targeted crackdown on his community and said that more than 50 licensed radio operators had been arrested. They were publicly paraded on state television and forced to make confessions. The BFRR is being portrayed by propagandists as a front organization for an alleged espionage network. Technically untenable Besarab also emphasized that the accusations were technically absurd. Modern state encryption cannot be cracked with com- mercially available handheld radios and simple receiver modules. Never- theless, the defendants face life imprisonment or even the death penalty, which is still prescribed for high treason in Belarus. Viasna also con- firmed the arrests. A fellow prisoner of the detained Andrei Repetsi reported that Repetsi was not allowed to talk about his case due to secrecy and only made bitterly ironic remarks about the classification of his case. A fellow inmate of Andrei Repetsi reported that Repetsi was not allowed to talk about his case due to secrecy and only made bitterly ironic comments about his file being classified as “top secret.” Amateur radio operators around the world use their technology primarily out of interest in techno- logy, for competitions, or for international communication. At the same time, amateur radio is considered difficult to control and often continues to function even when the internet or mobile communica- tions fail. It is precisely this resistance to censorship that has re- peatedly brought it into the crosshairs of authoritarian governments, most recently in Cuba, where frequencies were deliberately jammed during protests. Checking the pirate F_B chats and posts, I found the reason from an of- ficial: Within February we expect to have completed the SFN DAB+ digital audio mode of Attica, with Hymettus and Parnitha in a phase agreement and their upgrade to 0.8 kW and 1.2 kW, respectively. By the end of the summer the goal is to have several other DAB+ broadcasting centers in the region operating. Mary Simon is Canada's governor general and the representative of King Charles as King of Canada. Today, she helped officiate at the opening of Canada's new consulate in Nuuk, Greenland. In the BBC's report on the opening, they mentioned: "Simon, who grew up in Nunavik in northern Quebec, is the first Canadian governor general to visit Greenland since 1982. But her exposure to the Arctic territory began decades ago, she said, when she would hear Green- landic Inuit songs as a child through her grandmother's shortwave radio." Could this have been Gronlands Radio? According to the book "Broadcasting on the Short Waves, 1945 to Today" in the section for 1970: "Gronlands Radio, Godthab, Greenland was another rare station. Under good conditions it could sometimes be heard on three different frequencies — 5960, 5980 and 9575 kHz. — at its morning sign on at 1010 GMT." Greenland was on shortwave as early as 1948 according to the book but left shortwave in 1958 and then returned in 1965. Anyone remember hearing them? Or perhaps it was just CBC's Northern Service playing the Greenlandic Inuit songs. By the way, Mary Simon worked as a producer and announcer for the CBC Northern Service in the 1970s. (Dr. Hansjoerg Biener-D, Bieners DX Digest Januar #67 column via wwdxc BC-DX TopNews Febr 3) Listening in to Radio Mali, Bamako. Radio (Nationale du) Mali is one of the stations you could still listen to on shortwave to ring in the New Year. But the original reason for this listening project was the second summit of the leaders of Burkina Faso, Mali, and Niger, scheduled for 22 and 23 December 2025, in Bamako MLI. Speeches in African French, or with simultaneous translation, could indeed be heard during those days, but the reception quality and the reporter's French skills were insufficient for a detailed comprehension. The Alliance of Sahel States (Alliance des Etats du Sahel) was founded in 2023. It emerged after military coups in the three states mentioned and relies on Russia as its international partner. Among the most important outcomes of the summit were the establishment of a 5,000-strong military unit for counter-terrorism, the founding of a joint bank, various infrastructure projects to connect the capital cities, and the introduction of a common passport and identity card. Overall, the press release-style reporting on https://www.ortm.ml was meager. The traditional broadcast schedule remains in effect: 06:00-08:00 UTC 5995 kHz Morning program "Au Chant du Coq". Shortwave broadcasts sometimes begin well before 6:00 a.m., sometimes considerably later. 08:00-18:00 UT 9635 kHz. 18:00-24:00 UT 5995 kHz. In December 2025, reception on 5995 kHz was already so good in the early evening that one could enjoy the long, sometimes very complex, African music. The morning program "Au Chant du Coq" could also be followed with medium reception. The frequent crowing of a rooster was very unusual for urban European ears. Apparently, one of the presenters once imitated it so well that a recording was also played several times. Reception was possible on the daytime frequency of 9635kHz up to two hours before the end of the broadcast, although it was affected by Chinese National Radio #17 on 9630 kHz. There is also a weekly English-language segment, broadcast on Saturdays from approximately 18:50-19:05 UT on 5995 kHz (on 13 December, but not on 20 December). Looking at the website many outdated news items were noted. This was noteworthy not only with regard to the AES summit, but also with regard to the African Football (Soccer) Championships (21 December 2025 - 18 January 2026). For a long time, nothing in the broadcasts sounded like football or football results. This would be plausible if ORTM only had broadcasting rights for Mali's matches. In fact, on 3 January 2026, after the group stage, the round of 16 match between Mali and Tunisia (19:00 UTC) was heard live on 5995 kHz. At least for a while, because reception was poor that evening. The game ended 3-2 for the underdog Mali, after extra time and a penalty shootout. Mali wasn't the favourite team in the quarter-final on 9 January 2026 either. They were then eliminated 0-1 by Senegal team. Reception was possible on 9635 kHz. However, the reporter team (a man and a woman) could barely be heard over the shouting and occasional vuvuzela sounds. The signal-to-noise ratio was poor for reasons other than those typically associated with shortwave radio, as the music during breaks in the broadcast was fine. As extra time approached the switchover time of 18:00 UT, Radio Mali re- mained on the air on 9635kHz, but not a moment longer than until the final whistle and the sealed defeat. On 5995 kHz, however, the first thing heard was classic rock (Go Your Own Way / Fleetwood Mac, Sunday Bloody Sunday / U2), before snatches of West African balafon music became audible around 18:12 UT. Live streams, which would allow verifying shortwave reception or research the broadcast content in more detail, have been unavailable for some years. Dear Rene, As my hobby is listening to remote radio stations, I was very pleased to hear your station MCB Radio. I have been interested in remote radio stations since 1969. I live here in Germany; until 1991 year I lived in Romania. Your station can be quite often heard here at my home. Today I send you a report for a recent reception. I hope that this report will also be of interest to you. I can give the following details about my listening to your station: Date: 18th of January 2026. Time: 18:50-19:15 UT. Frequency: 846 kHz. SINPO rating as received here in Fuerth Germany (location G.C. coordinates 49 31 11 N 10 59 26 E) was: 35433. To verify that I have been listening to your station, here are some details to identify the program I heard. The program was in the Dutch language. The hours are given in UTC. Your program broadcasted oldie music like: 18:50 English song "Mary Lou". 19:11 English song "Lady Jane" by Rolling Stones. At 19:00 news (one oft the main item: Iran with internet access block), after that station identification, and announcement of playing music from the 70ies and 80ies I enclose also a short videoclip of part of my recep- tion. My receiver is a SONY ICF 2010, a world band portable with synchronous detection mode. As antenna I am using a wire connected to the windows cur- tain rod. As I told you, I was very pleased of having been able to hear your program. Could you please confirm that it really was your station I was listening to. A QSL card stating date, time, frequency and transmit- ter site of my report would be most appreciated. I hope to hear from you soon. Kind regards Erich - 5 Febr 2026. NEW ZEALAND 11725 kHz R New Zealand National w/end of music show w/"It's All Over Now Baby Blue" (Marianne Faithfull) and into "RNZ News at 1 o'Clock" w/the lead item about water pollution because of release of un- treated waste water somewhere in NZ (I missed where!) and other items about Savanna Guthrie's Mother's kidnapping, and Super Bowl LX, and other silly sport news. Programme preview at :04 and then weather at :05, and into about 10 minutes of music leading up to Country Life [including "Too Blue" (7 Worlds Collide)] and a 'good news' feature about recreating hi- storical perfumes scientifically from residue in containers. Today's 'Country Life' included stories about an 'unusual river crossing' (a river boat ferry) with Tom Jones, the operator of the Tuapeka Mouth ferry across the Clutha River the last such ferry in the Southern hemis- phere. Huh. I've been on a couple in Michigan, which are all still running, but only a few are 'river' ferries so that may be a distinction as may be the 'water power' aspect of the thing rather than a engine powered vessel. Its operation is weather dependent and if the water is too high or the winds too great, they don't run. Also at :27 an item about Mark Leishman's visit with Dave Taylor and his partner Kirsty Burrows, about Three Creeks at Burkes Pass a little slice of Americana on the South Island which they rebuilt after a fire in the 1990s to resemble a bit of 'Route 66' in its heyday. He called Dave 'a bit of a hoarder' based on the stuff he's collected to make the 'attraction' and Kirsty has competed in the 'world pin-up queen' com- petition with that 1950s era as her back- drop. Mark also toured the rest of the small town including a coffee shoppe, the oldest purpose built Union Church in NZ which is still in use as a church and the cemetery. At :49 back to general 'All Night' programming w/music like "He Tangi Apakura / It's Alright" (Ria Hall) and "If You Can Fake it, Make It" (Cosa nostra) and of course the OM EE chatter. On February 10th, the 40meter band, similar to several instances in recent weeks, was severely affected by Russian OTHR radar. A 40 Hertz hum was au- dible across the entire band. The field strength fluctuated significantly with QSB. This was not due to a new radar or other intruders, or even in- terference from solar activity, as some on the band had speculated. Rather, it was a mix of intermodulation products due to extremely good pro- pagation. This led to OTH radars transmitting below the band likely inter- fering with the equally strong radio stations above the band. The attached screenshots show three instances of the Russian container OTH radar as well as strong radio signals above it. Within the band, this all blended into a broadband hum. At around 7040 kHz and below, the bursts of the Chinese mainland radar are clearly visible. Simultaneously, very good conditions were observed on 80 meters with pro- nounced multipath reflections from strong European stations – Arctic Flutter. Conditions were excellent towards Canada and the USA. This was reported by the Head of the Intruder Monitoring Department at the DARC (German Amateur Radio Club) Harald Geier, DL9NDW. There were days when WRNO continued broadcasting well after 0500 h or even well after 0800 h and was still audible at that time for me in Europe. The reception was very inconsistent, regardless of the broadcast time. Some- times it was just a whisper, sometimes the signal was usable. The station broadcasts a mix of sermons in English and Hindi, occasionally other languages, and some very secular-sounding Christian contemporary music. The station has verified reception reports by physical QSL cards in the past. My most recent QSL was received in 2021 after 39 days (16 days for mail delivery) for a report to It was indeed preceded by an email responding to my comments. (Dr. Hansjoerg Biener-D, direct and wor Febr 3) Re: USA - WRNO New Orleans in January 2026. I received a printed QSL from WRNO about a month ago for a reception in November. The signal at that time was one of the strongest in the 41-meter band (in Western Wisconsin). My report was mailed to them with a SASE and $5 bill. Here are links to the FRONT and BACK of the QSL.
