Something is really happening with 4TRP! Outstanding propagation or what? Now, from 1500+ UTC on March 24 (Tuesday), I am again having no problem hearing the low powered station on 2355 kHz, with pop songs and nice IDs. Amazing to hear this, as I often checked for this station in past months with no result at all via the Townsville, Queensland-AUS Kiwi SDR remote. I now have heard the station yesterday from 1702 to past 2000+ UT, with a fairly steady reception. Today it is also with very decent reception. Outstanding for such a low powered station ! My remote audio Also with fairly decent reception today via the Kiwi SDR remote in SoEaAustralia, at Strathbogie, Victoria. An signal string measured 2354.984 kHz at 21.10 UT on March 24. ed. The ERT from Greece is active again on Athens 729 kHz. However, I have the impression that the power is much lower than the 100 kW listed on MW List.orgdatabase. I remember that its absence on the channel had left room for Radio Kano from Nigeria WeAF (and also Cape Pulpit from South Africa). I also confirm on 945 and 1287 kHz the reactivation of 'Galei Zahal', the Israeli army radio station, whose closure had been scheduled by the go- vernment for March 1, 2026. Evidently, the war with Iran has caused a change of plans. Concurrently the Saratov SDR is back online with a very shaky interconnection; checking the 1305 kHz signal there has thusfar pro- ven impossible this evening (or perhaps I lack the patience to pursue). From BBC Monitoring: Internet shutdown enters day 24, radio transmitter hit in southern Iran. The state-imposed near-total internet shutdown en- tered its 24th day today. Only a few Iranian news agency websites remain accessible from abroad, while Telegram channels run by domestic outlets continue to serve as key information sources. Hello everyone, From the "Shortwave Broadcasting Gallery" board on the South Korean forum DCInside: According to a post by Lee Jun-hee (handle: Radioboy), Shiokaze 'Sea Breeze', a broadcast service directed toward North Korea and operated by the Japanese civic organization "Investigation Commission on Missing Japa- nese Probably Related to North Korea (COMJAN)," appears to have discon- tinued the issuance of QSL. The source of this information is said to be an email from the chairman of COMJAN. According to the COMJAN's official website, Shiokaze has not traditionally issued formal QSL. Instead, it has adopted a system in which a "thank-you document" is sent only to those who make a donation of 1000 JPY or more via a postal transfer form and include reception details (such as date, frequency, and reception conditions) in the message column. However, it should be noted that as of March 25, 2026, this description has not been removed from the COMJAN's website, indicating that further veri- fication is necessary. Source (DCInside): Shiokaze (COMJAN)'s official website: Here is the English translation of the post to DCInside: I've been exchanging emails with the representative of the Investigation Commission on Missing Persons, which operates Shiokaze. After a long time, I received a message from them, and when I read it, it said that they would be discontinuing the issuance of QSL cards. Moreover, the represen- tative, Mr. Kazuhiro Araki, kindly took the time to write to me in Korean. However, the contents of the reception report will be passed on to Mr. Tatsuru Murao, the secretary-general in Japan who is responsible for the operation and program production of Shiokaze. If you didn't know this, now you do ! It seems that they will no longer issue QSL cards anymore ... ?? (Akiyoshi Teraoka-JP, wor March 25) JAPAN NHK R2 program will end at 1505 UT on March 29. NHK announced R2 program will close its 95 years history at 1505 UT on March 29, 2026. At 1500-1505 UT last closing message will be on air. Most of the programs of R2 will be transferred to "NHK AM"(former R1) and "NHK FM" after March 30, except; Arabic Lesson, News in Thai / Chinese / Korean / Vietnamese (to online only), Stock Market Reports, "Easy Japa- nese"(to NHK World Radio Japan ) and other 4 programs. The transmission licenses of all R2 stations (including 4 x 500 kW sites - Shobu (Tokyo) 693 kHz, Ebetu (Sapporo) 747 kHz, Ogata (Akita) 774 kHz, Otsu (Kumamoto) 873 kHz) will be expired after April 1, 2026. NHK says they will save 37 billion yen for the next 20 years by ending R2. (Takahito Akabayashi, Tokyo-JP, direct and wor March 26) Re: NHK R2 program will end at 1505 UT on March 29. Thank you,Takihito-san for giving us the exact details of the cessation of the NHK 2 network. I'll most definitely be listening on that day/time for the final time. I calculated the savings to NHK. It's really very paltry ... about 23 million USD per year. What's that ? About the cost of 7 or 8 Patriot missiles (and hundreds and hundreds have been fired in the Middle East, most at 5 or 10 thousand dollar low tech shahed drones). Go figure! (Walt Salmaniw-BC-CAN, wor March 26) JAPAN {and non} OM Akiyoshi Teraoka-JP informs about the schedule of NHK's emergency shortwave transmission in Japanese to Iran: In these times of conflicts and wars everywhere, remember the key fact: shortwave HF is the only medium for inter-national and inter-continental communication that, unlike e.g. SATCOM, landline connections, and sub- marine cables, cannot be blocked, censored, or cut off. What's more, there are no call costs or monthly fees. (Akiyoshi Teraoka-JP, wor March 20) NHK World on SW in A-26 season. I see in Radio Japan's A26 schedule some omissions and some changes: For English, 0500 UT to Africa is dropped. Now there is only one trans- mission left: 14.00-14.30 UT to SoEaAsia, on new 11800 kHz. No longer using relays via TDF France. Only relay outside Japan is the Russian broadcast to Europe via MBR Nauen: 04.30-04.50 UT on 6165 kHz. {MBR Nauen Germany EU relay of NHK will end for ever June 28, 2028, ed.} Japanese to Oceania direct, on 175 degr: 20.00-21.00 UT on 9480 kHz. French is now direct from Yamata-JP site instead, not from TDF Issoudun France European relay anymore: 05.00-05.20 at 330 degr on 21500 kHz; 21.00-21.20 at 305 degr on 12060 kHz. (Joe Hanlon-NJ-USA, wor March 15) I missed the one NHK Nauen Germany transmission in my earlier post. In B-25 season there were 14 transmitter hours daily of NHK broadcasts via TDF Issoudun; 12 in Japanese and two in various languages. These made up virtually all of the non-RFI bookings at the site. If a new French government decides to kill Radio France Internationale (and we could be looking at that in 2027y) it would probably mean the end of the TDF Issoudun site, which could be renamed "It is done". Re: Radio Six International. Is the Roumoules transmitter on 1467 kHz French or Monaco ? The Principality of Monaco was too small to accommodate transmitters; they had to be located outside its borders. At the time, granting a French broadcasting licence was impossible, as it would have opened a breach of the monopoly, and the French government feared that private stations, banned since the end of the war, would claim the right to broadcast. Monaco could request extraterritoriality from France for a piece of land, but such an act is irreversible, even if the transmitting center were to disappear ! There was also diplomatic extraterritoriality, as with embassies. However, diplomatic status prohibits this type of activity. Ultimately, governments found a workaround: what is known in diplomacy as "exchanges of letters" or "diplomatic correspondence." This is a written document that formalizes bilateral agreements. These bilateral agreements between states take precedence over national law. "The Gouvertement of the Repubblikie francaise autorrise" The facilities are therefore 100% Monegasque, while the land remains sub- ject to French law. The call signs begin with "3A" and not "F". The Principality of Monaco owns the frequencies under international agree- ments. Gustave Auvray, RMC's technical director, and Cesar-Charles Solamito, the president and advisor to the Prince, negotiated this at the 1975 Geneva Conference. Broadcasts are supervised by the Principality's authority and are not subject to ARCOM, the French media regulatory body, nor is it mandatory to be recognized as a broadcaster by one of the Euro- pean Union's media authorities. However, if individuals enter the site or risk climbing the antennas, it is the French Gendarmerie, not the Monegasque police, who will apprehend them. For some time now, I have been thinking about a historical broadcasting event from 1981 that still leaves several questions unanswered. This ap- peared in the book "War of the Black Heavens" by Michael Nelson. Here is the original text: "A cross-border oddity came in 1981 when Radio Vatican agreed to a request from Romania to shield one of the Vatican's omnidirectional transmitters because the Romanians wanted to use the same frequency to broadcast in Ro- manian to Moldovan SSR in the Soviet Union. The Russians must have been very displeased." "Father Borgomeo, interviewed by the author, Rome, July 5, 1996". It is possible to clarify a few details from this text. In my opinion, the frequency in question is 1530 kHz, on which Vatican Radio broadcast pro- grams for international audiences in 1981, including programs in Romanian. The Romanian transmitters on frequency are the two stations in Radauti / Mihaileni in the far north of Romania on the Ukrainian border, about 50 km from the border of what was then the Moldavian SSR. Location at 47 58 05.78 N 26 09 06.05 E The other transmitter is located in the south, roughly where the Danube Delta begins,at the site of Mahmudia or Nufaru/Delta, also near the border with Ukraine; it is only about 60 km from the border of the Moldavian SSR. This immediately raises the first question: namely, what was broadcast from Romania on 1530 kHz during the initial phase in 1981-82, or at least what was intended. To make matters even more intriguing, a 15 kW transmitter have also gone in operation on 1332 kHz between 1980 and 1982 in Galati, a city also on the Danube near the border with the former Moldavian SSR,approximately 70 km west of Mahmudia. Here, too, the information in the WRTH was the same as for the other two stations. It is conceivable that these three stations were intended to extend the coverage of Radio Iasi (1053 kHz, then broadcasting at 1000 kW) in "Soviet" Moldova. Another possibility would have been to broadcast the foreign service in Romanian and/or Russian. Unfortunately, I am not aware of any corresponding reception data from that period. However,as mentioned above, the central domestic programs were ultimately broadcast from Bucharest starting around 1983. From my listening location at the time in western Romania—more than 500 km from the border of the former USSR — I cannot say how the shielding men- tioned in the quote actually worked. For me, Vatican Radio was dominant on 1530 kHz during the period 1981-1989; incidentally, it also broadcast a program in Romanian here at certain times.Interference from other stations on the same frequency was sometimes low to moderate and came from Romanian stations, but also occasionally from Mayak in the USSR. As for my search for the documented agreement that substantiates the facts described, I found nothing in the Romanian National Digital Archives, nor did my inquiries to Vatican Radio or Romanian Radio yield any results. The former did not respond to my inquiries from last November, while the latter promised to notify me as early as 2023 if anything were to be found in the archives of Romanian Radio. Romania's attempt, described above, to influence its eastern neighbor through radio broadcasts was not the last. A few years later, specifically in 1987-88, Romanian Radio jammed the medium-wave broadcasts of Radio Chisinau on 999 kHz and the Romanian programs of Radio Moscow on 1548 kHz for several months with its own domestic programming, which was broadcast on the same frequencies. This was observed by several DXers in Romania at that time. As we've written before, almost everyone has heard of the gigantic aban- doned over-the-horizon radar station "Duga" in Chernobyl, but few know that in the Far East there was an identical over-the-horizon radar sta- tion, disbanded in 1989. In the previous two parts of our story about this "Far Eastern Russian Woodpecker," we showed the remains of the Duga-2 over-the-horizon radar transmitting center, or "Object 1937," on the Lian-2 technical grounds, as well as the nearby personnel shelter. In this final article, we'll travel one and a half kilometers from the Duga-2 position to its military town, called Lian, which was a closed territorial entity (ZATO) where the PDRC personnel lived. You can read the story of the Duga-2 itself in Part 1, but now let's head straight to the garrison. The Russian Woodpecker was a notorious Soviet signal that could be heard on the shortwave radio bands worldwide between July 1976 and Dec 1989. It sounded like a sharp, repetitive tapping noise, at 10 Hz, giving rise to the "Woodpecker" name. The random frequency hops disrupted legitimate broadcast, amateur radio, utility transmissions, and resulted in thousands of complaints by many countries worldwide. The signal was long believed to be that of an over- the-horizon radar (OTH) system. This theory was publicly confirmed after the fall of the Soviet Union, and is now known to be the Duga-3[1] system, part of the Soviet ABM early-warning network. NATO military intelligence had photographed the system and given it the NATO reporting name Steel Yard. RUSSIA {USSR radio history} Kaliningrad Oblast. The Swiss have dismissed a proposal to reduce funding for the television and radio licence fee of the Swiss Broadcasting Corporation (SBC). On Sunday they also voted on a shift to individual taxation for married couples, the creation of a climate fund, and anchoring cash in the con- stitution. Details here: (Mike Terry-UK, wor March 8) Reuters: Swiss voters set to reject plan to cut funding for state broad- caster. Swiss voters looked set on Sunday to reject a referendum to slash pub- lic broadcaster SRG's funding, with early projections showing 62% opposing a plan to cut the annual licence fee, a move critics warned would weaken media and fuel disinformation. The campaign wanted to reduce the annual licence fee that all Swiss households must pay from 335 Swiss francs ($431.87) to 200 francs. Supporters, mainly from right-wing groups including the Swiss People's Party (SVP), had argued that the charge - the highest in the world - was too expensive, and that SRG, which runs 17 radio stations and seven TV channels in four languages had become too bloated. They also said the SRG was not politically independent, and had a left- wing bias in its coverage. Swiss voters reject cuts to licence fee; March 8, 2026. After polling stations closed at noon, second vote projections published at 3pm have confirmed early trends: 62% of voters rejected licence fee cuts, 71% rejected a climate fund, 55% accepted individual taxation for married couples, and 73% accepted a counterproposal to the cash initia- tive. Turnout was 56%. "The outcome is a victory for the Swiss government. Voters followed them on all national vote issues," commented Lukas Golder, a political scientist at the gfs.bern research institute. "It's a sign of trust." The clear 'no' trend to reducing the media licence fee and 'yes' to individual taxation is based on strong participation in cities, which tend to lean to the left, he said. The "SBC initiativeExternal link", backed by the right-wing Swiss People's Party, the Swiss Trade Association (SGV/USAM) and the youth wing of the centre-right Radical-Liberal Party, had sought to cut the annual media licence fee from CHF335 ($431) to CHF200 and exempt all businesses. Swissinfo is part of the SBC which funds half its budget via the licence fee. On Sunday the SBC said it was pleased about the broad support from "all parts of society". In a statement SBC director-general Susanne Wille said the result of the vote was an obligation to do everything possible to "continue to accompany the public with a diverse and high-quality programme in everyday life". Despite the clear no, Urs Furrer, director of the Swiss Trade Association, told Swiss public television SRF that another attempt would be made to at least abolish fees for businesses. He didn't want to elaborate on the form this would take. Supporters had argued Switzerland's licence fee - the highest in the world - must fall as living costs rise. They say the SBC should refocus on its core public service mission. This was the second people's initiative in the past decade aiming to cut SBC funding. The "No Billag" initiative to abolish the licence fee entirely was rejected by 71% of voters in 2018. Although the proposal was rejected on Sunday, the licence fee will still be reduced to CHF300 per household by 2029 after a government decision. Their English- language transmission for South Asia on 9405 kHz, at 16:00 UTC, usually comes in rather well in Europe, too. However, the opening bulletins are always old news. It was the Friday bulletin when I listened on Monday (yesterday), and the Monday bulletin when I listened again on Tuesday (today). On both days, the audio files they had chosen for transmission were actually correct - Monday's program was according to schedule with "Beyond the Reefs" and "Doomscroll News Report" on Monday, and "Hear in Taiwan" on Tuesday. But why the old news on an otherwise current reel ? I found the same pattern on July 11 last year, when that Friday program ran the Thursday news bulletin. This means that a news bulletin that the European audience gets to hear in French and German at 19:00 UT on one day, will be beamed to South Asian listeners only a day - 21 hours - later. The English transmissions are still worth to be listened to, but RTI gives away a classical ace that radio could and should have: speediness, if not realtime newsbreaking. Suggestion: let's send the occasional reception report to RTI's English service, and express our surprise that the only English-language transmis- sion available on shortwave (as far as I know, it is their only one) broadcasts old news. Chris Greenway on X yesterday: "Today is the 80th anniversary of the BBC Russian service. It only began in 1946 as Moscow had vetoed BBC plans to start a Russian service during WW2." Link is to a very detailed article, a 15 minute reading time is quoted. In Russian, on it's history and how it is currently reaching 7 to 12 mil- lion people a week, a third through it's website or app, two thirds on so- cial media or Telegram. It translated easily to English on Google Chrome. Goes on to report on how Russia is looking to increase it's censorship, how Iran has now cut off internet connectivity apart from state media out- lets and banking systems, and the BBC has thus started shortwave broad- casts. (Mike Barraclough-UK, BrDXC-UK bcdx-news March 25) USA WEWN / EWTN website has updated (after 2 years) its frequency sche- dule page at and is now showing the schedule for 28 March to 24 October 2026, as fol- lows: 12050 kHz from 1400-0600 UT and 15610 kHz from 1900-0600 UT. No languages listed, but 12050 kHz is Spanish, and 15610 kHz would be English but is still, I think, currently off-air. (Alan Roe, Teddington-UK, BrDXC-iogroup March 15) USA 5085 kHz WTWW update early UT March 17 from George McClintock: still can't get it to work, after installing a new tube. Will keep mess- ing with it, awaiting consultant, who is ex-Continental and made the transmitter, to return from Vietnam. There was a burned-up shroud around the tubes, blackening. Checked the tube sockets and they seem to match. Another $1200 tube did not work and surprisingly the seller refunded his money. Got two plungers costing $6000 each. Bob Biermann replies to me about the delay getting WTWW 5085 kHz SW back on air: "The truth is the number of us that can work on these transmit- ters shrinks everyday. It is beyond critical. Last week I needed to call Continental Electronics for a part for WRMI. Continental is the last re- maining US Shortwave transmitter manufacturer. Nobody would answer the phone. I tried for several days. I hear they may be exiting the SW sector. That means no more custom parts. That will leave only China, India, and a very expensive European company with a three year lag time".
