Czech Radio trade unions declare strike alert over media bill. Trade unions at Czech Radio on Wednesday declared an open-ended strike alert in protest against a planned government bill on publicservice media. The time and form of the protest is still being considered. The protest action is to be coordinated with unions at Czech Television. The government-proposed legislation would shift the funding of public ser- vice media from license fees to the state budget. Czech Radio's management has criticized it as "incomplete, hastily prepared and, in some provisions, even hostile". It argues that the proposed level of funding from the state budget would significantly limit the broadcaster's activities and under- mine its independence. The civic group Million Moments for Democracy has launched a petition in support of the country's public broadcasters titled "Hands Off the Media". According to the group, the government of Prime Minister Andrej Babis in- tends to dismantle, without public debate, the longstanding funding system that has ensured the independence of public service media for decades. The initiative gathered more than 3,800 signatures within hours, with a protest march planned in Prague in early May. Author: Daniela Lazarova https://english.radio.cz/students-rally-prague-support-public- broadcasters-8884411> Students rally in Prague in support of public broadcasters. Several hundred students gathered for a protest march in Prague on Wednes- day to express support for public service media. The protest was organized by students associated with the "Media nedame!" initiative in response to a proposed law that would change the funding model of Czech Radio and Czech Television, a move they say could significantly affect the broad- casters' operations. Demonstrations are also taking place in other cities across the country. According to the organizers, the students are calling on the government to withdraw the draft legislation and preserve the current system of televi- sion and radio license fees, which they argue ensures stable and predic- table funding for public service media. Following the two attacks that destroyed part of the shortwave antennas in April 2022, the Republic of Transnistria had set its terrorist alert level to "red". It still applies to this day as it has been renewed once again. Almost all of the restrictions imposed during the red level transition remain in force. Specifically, critical infrastructure will continue to be closely monitored and guarded. Checkpoints to inspect vehicles are main- tained at entries and exits of the area. Security forces are on maximum alert. Drone flights are prohibited without the permission of the Trans- nistrian Ministry of State Security. Entrance to the center is controlled by the army. Peculiarity of the site is its fence that forms the border with Ukraine. The RADIO DARC technical team has decided to use a new shortwave broadcast frequency. From Sunday, May 3rd, the main broadcast will be heard again on Sunday 11 a.m. local time {CEST} on 6070 kHz in the 49 m band. The systems of the British broadcasting partner ENCOMPASS from Woofferton site are used for this, from where RADIO DARC could previously be heard on 9670 kHz. The background to this frequency change is the development of the maximum cutoff frequency in summer and the sharply decreasing sunspot activity. This has recently led to poor reception, especially for listeners in western Germany, for example in the Ruhr area. The switch back to 6070 kHz promises more stable signals without a dead zone, especially during the summer months, but also not as high field strengths as before. At the same time, RADIO DARC will be heard via 'Channel 292' from Ingolstadt Rohrbach Waal, from where 9670 kHz will be used from May. All listeners are asked to monitor the new RADIO DARC frequency 6070 kHz from May 3rd and to send reception reports by email. (Deutschland-Rundspruch 16/2026; Deutscher Amateur-Radio-Club; Redaktion CQ DL; DL - Broadcast April 24, 2026) U.K. Radio DARC announces that starting Sunday, May 3, the main broadcast at 0900 UTC will once again be available on 6070 kHz in the 49-meter band. The reason for this frequency change from 9670 kHz is the shift in the maximum cutoff frequency during the summer and the sharp decline in sun- spot activity. {It is assumed that ENC Woofferton-UK will be used again, ed. df5sx} At the same time, Radio DARC will be heard on 'Channel 292' from Ingolstadt Rohrbach Waal Germany; from there, 9670 kHz will be used start- ing in May ... (Bernd Seiser-D, RTI tips / wwdxc BC-DX TopNews April 24) U.K. Re: Closure of Radio 4 on Long Wave. It's lasted this long because for the past few years UK electricity compa- nies have been paying for most of the costs as it's used for radio tele- switch meters. A radio teleswitch is a device used in the UK primarily to allow electri- city suppliers to switch large numbers of electricity meters between dif- ferent tariff rates, by broadcasting an embedded signal in broadcast radio signals. Radio teleswitches are also used to switch on/off consumer appli- ances to make use of cheaper differential tariffs such as Economy 7. The electricity companies have been replacing these meters with smart meters since 2017, fallen behind, COVID then caused further delays but target now is to complete their replacement by this September. (Mike Barraclough-UK, wor April 16) U.K. Closure of Radio 4 on Long Wave. Droitwich - Burghead - Westerglen James Cridland's radio newsletter. 20 April 2026: The BBC made an announcement about the future of BBC Radio 4 Longwave. In the early 1990s it was due for closure; then in 2011, they confidently suggested that it would be off by the end of the decade; in 2022 they an- nounced that they would stop scheduling separate content on longwave; they announced an information campaign in 2023 pending the switchoff which was planned for March 2024. Then the BBC suddenly said it was staying until June 2025, then announced that it would be on until some time in 2026, and now they say it'll close "later this year". It's quite the long goodbye. (via Mike Terry-UK, wor April 20) Last year (August 2025) this forum had some posts reporting that September 26, 2026 would be the shutoff date for LW 198 kHz broadcast, at least for the Radio 4 programming. Yes, BBC London WS via CRRT RRTM Telecom Tashkent Uzbekistan Shortwave Transmitting bcast center UZB on 9590_even kHz heard here in western EUR also lately. Seemingly they have got erected a new TX unit at Tashkent bcast center, aligned exactly on x.000 kHz, despite their other old remaining Soviet era Leningrad made TXS, at present on mostly odd minus 60 Hertz frequencies alignement. [selected SDR options, span 12.5 kHz RBW 15.3 Hertz] (wb df5sx, wwdxc BC-DX TopNews April 16) Listening to WorldService on new 9590 kHz assumingely replacing 9750 kHz where there is nothing heard. I think they changed frequencies because of a Chinese domestic station on 9750 kHz which I have heard traces of here. BBCWS 9590 kHz will run 00-02 UT. (Andy Reid awradio22, wor April 16) HFCC shows site for both Tashkent 100 kW at 131 degrees; surprised so good over here. Glenn. (Glenn Hauser-OK-USA, hcdx & wor April 16) UZBEKISTAN 9590 kHz April 19 at 0010 UT, S7/S8 JBA signal, supposedly new BBCWS relay via CRRT RRTM Telecom Tashkent Uzbekistan Shortwave Transmitting bcast center UZB at 00-02 UT aimed SoEast, but being heard well in eastern NoAM. Not here, tonight. (Glenn Hauser-OK-USA, via NASWA Electronic Flashsheet #1252 April 19) Seemingly the CRRT Tashkent technicians start their daily shift work at this hour ? Heard - on air - two short 5-minute lasting 'antenna / txion tune signals' tests on very odd freqs, at 23.03 UT on 9870.891 kHz; and 9882.891 kHz at 23.09 UT, like the Dushanbe 'Voice of Tibet' frq distance on noon at 13 - 14 UT near 9874 kHz. Just sent an e-mail to Pryce and Warren at Radio Vanuatu, thanking them for fixing the audio. Radio Vanuatu 9960 kHz on April 16, from 0440+ UT, heard via New Zealand SDR remote receiver, with excellent audio quality with the "ABC Pacific Beat" program (very readable and sharp audio!) in English. My remote audio Program had an interesting item about a politician who was convicted of his involvement with bribing voters with "pieces of fish". Good memories of logs / QSL's from April 1972, from Rob Wagner VK3BVW, Mount Evelyn-Vic-Australia. Hi Glenn - Rob Wagner has posted an interesting article about his, and others, April 1972 SW_activities. It brought back a lot of memories for me, as I was also listening to many of the stations he mentions and also QSL'ed a few. Thanks, Rob !
