Monitoring RBA today on 11900 kHz at 1325 UT I've noticed a variation in the schedule as shown across HFCC, Aoki, and EiBi. Most schedules have Kannada at 1315 UT, Hindi listed at 1330 UT and English at 1345 UT. This is not exactly true, even according to RBA's website. RBA does list Hindi at 1330 UT and English at 1345 UT, but the 1330 UT block actually lists BOTH - Hindi and English as "- Fresh Hindi (hin)" and "-Fresh (eng)" and a regular English block at 1345 UT. The English bit of 1330 UT kicked in at about 1335 UT. So, if you want to catch RBA, don't think you've not logged them if the language doesn't match. As of June 22, 2026, the shortwave radio broadcast of the NRC's official time signal will no longer be available. (Tony Pavick-Hope-BC-CAN, wor May 22) According to a notice posted by Canada's National Research Council, CHU's shortwave broadcasts are scheduled to end on June 22, 26. For many liste- ners outside of the shortwave community, this may seem like an insignifi- cant footnote in a world dominated by smartphones, GPS timing, and inter- net-connected everything. But for those of us who have spent decades tuning the HF spectrum, stations like CHU and WWV are far more than the typical gov't/utility broadcasts. Read the full story here: ('SWLing Post' via SWB #2106 May 24) Re: BREAKING NEWS: CHU to be shutdown on 22 June 2026. The approximate cost for CHU per year is $360,00 Canadian dollars ! Very simple to cut something that so few Canadians know nothing about. Please the masses who don't know any better, but eliminate an important service for those who use it and understand why it is there. Sound familiar ??? RCI, VOA, etc. I have a suggestion. Get rid of the archaic and completely useless posi- tion of Governor-General ! Her annual salary, plus expense accounts, etc. is well over that amount each year, plus they pay for two official resi- dences for her; one in Ottawa and one in Quebec. She even has a wardrobe allowance ! (Sheldon Harvey-QC-CAN ve2shw, wor May 23) For my work with modern SDRs —and specifically for their precise alignment for comparative purposes — the discontinuation of the calibrated frequency transmissions from Ottawa on 3330, 7850, and 14670 kHz represents a severe loss. Alongside the calibrated broadcasts from WWV / WWVH and RWM Moscow Taldom, CHU had served as a highly accurate reference source for decades. (ed., wb df5sx) CHINA 17820 kHz UNIDENTIFIED at 1600 UT. A strong signal in the UK with only minor fading - Mike. Six years after RMC left the longwave band, only a few hours of nighttime broadcasting on medium wave remained in Roumoules for TWR. Under the leadership of Jean-Charles Allavena, the center began to attract new clients, and the initial trials targeting the United Kingdom were successful, extending to the far north of Europe. The center enables large-scale broadcasting on medium wave throughout Europe and North Africa. Its antenna directs the waves in five directions to focus them on the chosen target. The initial potential clients were broadcasters who wanted to offer their international listeners a superior listening experience compared to shortwave. A second clientele is now eager to use the service. This group consists of professionals, associations, and individuals who want to launch a widely broadcast program. This broadcasting is completely legal, without the administrative hassles and licensing, installation, and operating costs. Furthermore, the transmitter offers a transmission power of 500 or 1000 kW, unmatched in Europe. Ideally, several clients would ensure regular daily broadcasts at the same time, thus establishing a listening habit among listeners. Currently, Radio Six Internationale's program, MIDNIGHT RENDEZVOUS, hosted by Tony Currie and Allis Moss, is broadcast on 1467 kHz at 11:00 PM UK time (midnight in France). The HCDX site was down for some time on May 13 and I asked Risto Kotalampi-CA-USA what has happened. He said that the site is currently un- der a massive DDoS attack. I am working to reduce the load to prevent the entire server from crashing, as we are being flooded by hundreds of thou- sands of different IP addresses. Filtering and blocking these individual IPs is putting a significant strain on the system. I have just turned the site back on,but I cannot guarantee it will remain stable while I continue to work on further mitigation strategies. A Distributed Denial-of-Service (DDoS) attack is a malicious attempt to disrupt a server, service, or network by overwhelming it with a flood of Internet traffic, often using a botnet of compromised devices. These attacks make online services unavailable to legitimate users, causing down- time for websites, applications, and networks. (via SWB #2106 May 24) INDIA/BHARAT re: BC-DX items 15 May. Since independence, Akashvani stations have opened their broadcasting day with the iconic AIR signature tune and a two-stanza version of the Natio- nal Anthem, 'Vande Mataram' (lasting 65 seconds). In compliance with a directive from the Ministry of Home Affairs dated January 28, 2026, all stations have, since March 26, 2026, been broadcasting the National Anthem in its full six-stanza version (3 minutes, 10 seconds). The first of these new versions is performed by the renowned Hindi clas- sical vocalist Pt. He didn't speak Russian but is said to have been the first DJ in the USSR - if the translation engines work correctly - to play a song by the Beatles on air, although officially doesn't mean that he had been allowed to do so. He just did it. The management objected particularly to "Back in the USSR". According to SWL Information, a Japanese blog, Nishino kept working for Radio Moscow's Japanese service into the 1980s. He is also said to have popularized Soviet singer Alla Pugacheva in Japan. The SWL Info blogger got to know Nishino personally many years later, when the retired announ- cer collected information on Radio Moscow's Japan department from liste- ners' perspectives. German => English GROK: This SRF (Swiss Public Radio) podcast examines the intense language con- flict and information war in Latvia, a small Baltic country with a large Russian-speaking minority. Latvia has sharply restricted Russian-language content. The public broad- caster LSM shut down its popular Russian-language radio station 'Radio Four'). Russian-language education in schools has ended, Russian books face much higher taxes, and people with Russian passports must prove Latvian proficiency and pass security checks or leave the country. All this is justified as a matter of national security after Russia's inva- sion of Ukraine. Court Ruling: Latvia's Constitutional Court ruled that the state broad- caster is not required to offer programs in Russian, emphasizing that the Latvian language is essential to the existence of the Latvian state. Russian Propaganda: Russia and Belarus are actively targeting Latvian Russian-speakers. Radio Belarus is now broadcasting into Latvia (even in Latvian) with anti-Western, anti-EU messaging. Many Russian-speakers still consume Russian state media via VPN, YouTube, and apps, despite blocks. Latvia's traumatic history of Soviet occupation, mass deportations to Siberia, and forced Russification (which reduced the ethnic Latvian population from 80% to 52%) fuels the current hardline policy. Many Latvians view the Russian language as a tool of potential future aggres- sion ("Russki Mir"). Situation in Daugavpils: In the heavily Russian-speaking city near the Belarus border (contain nearly 80% Russian-speaking), tensions are high. The report highlights discrimination cases (e.g., hospital staff with Russian / Belarusian passports being fired from critical infrastructure), Russian disinformation campaigns, low trust in all media, and the chal- lenge of winning over Russian-speaking hearts and minds. Latvian officials and activists argue that without strong language pro- tection, Latvian identity and democracy itself would disappear. Some Rus- sian-speakers feel discriminated against, while younger generations show mixed identities — culturally Russian but politically oriented toward Europe. The podcast portrays Latvia as a frontline state in a cultural and infor- mational battle with Russia, where language is seen as both identity and a strategic weapon. It raises difficult questions about integration, secu- rity, minority rights, and whether strict language policies help or hinder national cohesion in the shadow of Russian aggression. (Rudolf Grimm, Ibiuna-SP-BRA #483, hcdx via wwdxc BC-DX TopNews May 16) U.K. Closure of BBC Radio 4 LW transmissions. The BBC has announced that BBC Radio 4's longwave broadcasts will be termi- nated on the night of Friday, June 26 to Saturday, June 27. This marks the disappearance of one of the broadcaster's oldest national distribution platforms, more than a hundred years after longwave was introduced for na- tional broadcasts. The announcement was made last Monday. Previously, a termination later in 2026 was anticipated, meaning the shutdown is now taking place several months earlier than expected. An international campaign to advocate for the preservation of the longwave broadcasts has been underway since March 2023. According to the activist group, more than 7,500 people have now signed a petition to save Radio 4 Longwave. Additionally, 25 British MPs signed a so-called Early Day Motion calling for the closure to be discussed in Parliament. Several members of the British House of Commons have also sent letters to both the BBC and the Department for Culture, Media and Sport to draw attention to the si- tuation. In June 2025, the BBC also received the report Still Speaking to the Na- tions, which lists various arguments for continuing longwave broadcasts. The document also includes responses from listeners explaining why recep- tion via longwave remains important to them. According to the campaign organization, the BBC has not yet provided a substantive response to the report. The action group states that listeners in rural areas, users at sea, and listeners outside the United Kingdom will be particularly affected by the disappearance of the longwave transmitter. In this regard, they point to the wide range of the signal, which can be received not only in the United Kingdom but also in large parts of Europe. The activists also point out that the BBC has not yet published a public impact study on the consequences of switching off the longwave service. According to the campaign, there is simultaneously an increasing focus on digital distribution and online listening options, while a portion of the current longwave audience has limited access to these. Acting Director-General Rhodri Talfan Davies has reportedly been asked for a comment, but according to the campaign organisation, he has not yet responded. May 19, 2026. Translated from Dutch. It specifically men- tions: * The growth of the organization, noting its success in attracting youth, students, and educated individuals, particularly from the University of Tehran. * Efforts to establish a secure, organized structure, including ideologi- cal training and the development of clandestine operational capabilities to counter government suppression. * A narrative surrounding a significant historical moment in the move- ment's history, emphasizing a commitment to continue the struggle. * The station, "Radio Payam," calls itself a voice of the movement, broadcasting from abroad to the people of Iran. Clarification on "Radio Payam". There appears to be confusion regarding the identity of this station: * Official IRIB Radio Payam: There is a well-known, state-owned radio sta- tion in Iran called "Radio Payam" (IRIB). It is a legitimate, government- operated service that primarily focuses on music, traffic updates, and general news. * The Clandestine Station: The station in the audio you provided is n o t the official Iranian state station. It is a clandestine radiostation using the same name, likely intended to mimic or confuse listeners by using a re- cognized name. * The Clandestine Station ("Radio Payam-e Azadi" aka Radio Message of Freedom): This organization is known for broadcasting political content, including interviews, critiques of the Iranian government, and discussions regarding revolutionary movements. Clandestine stations like this are ty- pically operated by opposition groups and broadcast from outside of Iran; because their content is often critical of the government, they frequently face attempts at signal interference or jamming by Iranian authorities. * The only information found is this twit { KI research: Radio Payam Azadi broadcasts free-to-air (FTA) as an audio/radio service rather than a standard video TV channel, and is available across multiple satellites. The exact frequencies for tuning in across the region include: * Hotbird 13F (13.0deg E): Frequency (10,727 MHz, Horizontal polarization, Symbol Rate 30,000, FEC (3/4). * TurkmenÄlem/MonacoSat (52.0deg E): Frequencies (10,887 MHz, and (11,221 MHz Vertical polarization. * Eutelsat 7B/7C (7.0deg E): Frequencies (11,285 MHz Vertical) and (11,304 MHz (Horizontal). The USamateur radio association, the ARRL, looks back on a successful Ham- vention. The US amateur radio expo took place from May 15 to 17 in Xenia, Ohio. Right from the start, numerous visitors flocked to the five exhibi- tion halls, four lecture rooms, and the massive flea market. In the ARRL’s expo area, visitors interacted with program representatives and volunteer leaders, including ARRL CEO David Minster (NA2AA) and Pre- sident Rick Roderick (K5UR). In the ARRL’s membership and sales area, this year’s major themes were Field Day, the "America250" initiative, and a handful of new book releases from the association. Stephanie Borden(W2MAU) of the ARRL VEC assisted radio amateurs with license renewals and answered questions regarding the question pools for US amateur radio exams. Young radio amateurs were able to practice soldering under supervision, decode Morse code, and answer the question: "What advice would you give to radio amateurs of the older generation?" Also present were representatives from the International Amateur Radio Union (IARU), the Japan Amateur Radio League (JARL), Radio Amateurs of Canada (RAC), and the Radio Society of Great Britain (RSGB). Bob Inderbitzen, NQ1R, Senior Director of Marketing and Innovation at the ARRL, delivered the keynote address at the FlexRadio banquet on Friday evening. "All of us in this room have a duty to ensure that innovation continues by creating an environment that welcomes and fosters the next generation," he said. He highlighted the efforts of the ARRL and the en- tire amateur radio community to promote pathways for young people that lead to further education and careers in radio technology. "You don't have to develop a new technology to make a lasting contribution. Sometimes, the most important innovation is simply opening up an opportunity for someone else," said Inderbitzen. At the 39th annual DX Dinner of the Southwest Ohio DX Association (SWODXA), ARRL CEO David Minster, NA2AA, served as the keynote speaker. Minster spoke on the topic of "Fairness in Ham Radio," urging the DXers in attendance to seriously address issues regarding excessive transmit power, remote operation utilizing stations at multiple locations, and other matters concerning fairness on the bands. Additionally, several awards were presented. Long-time QSL manager Charles Wilmot, M0OXO, and DXpedition veteran Elvira Simoncini, IV3FSG, were inducted into the CQ DX Hall of Fame. Yuris Petersons, YL2GM, was named SWODXA DXpeditioner of the Year for his operation from Marion Island as ZS8W, during which he com- pleted more than 30,000 QSOs. The Russian DXpedition Team—which included Hal Turley, W8HC—received the club's "DXpedition of the Year" award for the 9U1RU expedition to Burundi. The activity resulted in nearly 180,000 contacts. Finally, the Northern California DX Foundation (NCDXF) presented its Excellence Awards to the PJ6Y expedition to Sable Island for its focus on youth involvement, as well as to Otis Vicens (NP4G) and Ezequiel Prado (HI3R) for their 100% solar-powered and 100% remotely operated KP5/NP3VI DXpedition to Desecheo. Vicens is also this year's "Amateur of the Year" at the Dayton Ham- vention. There were also technical developments to report. A Japanese manufacturer displayed a mock-up of its new X-026 transceiver. This prototype could po- tentially become a new mobile transceiver covering HF, 6 meters, 2 meters, and 70 centimeters. The device is being touted as the successor to the IC-7100. It remains to be seen whether visitors to HAM RADIO in Frie- drichshafen at the end of June—or those attending the Tokyo Hamfair—will be the first to catch a glimpse of the finished product. Furthermore, the IC-5200 was unveiled—a new mobile transceiver for the 2m and 70cm bands—which, much like the X-026 project, utilizes a split-body design featuring a detachable display. Unlike its predecessor, the IC-5100, the successor IC-5200 features a color display and other advanced capabi- lities. A date has already been set for Hamvention 2027: the weekend of May 21–23. This recap was compiled using material from the ARRL, YouTube, and other online media sources.
