CBC/Radio-Canada is now a full Member of the European Broadcasting Union (EBU), following a vote earlier today at the EBU's 96th General Assembly in Prague. The move formalises and deepens the long-standing relationship between Canada's national public broadcaster and the EBU. As an Associate Member of the EBU since 1950, CBC/Radio-Canada has colla- borated with European public broadcasters on journalism, standards and technology, and built productive partnerships with leading EBU Members. Now, as a full Member, CBC/Radio-Canada has access to the entire breadth of EBU collaboration, including Member-only networks for investigative journalism, verification, digital news and data, as well as the Eurovision News Exchange and Euroradio Music Exchange services. Noel Curran, Director General of the EBU, said: "CBC/Radio-Canada has been part of the EBU family since our foundation in 1950. As one of the world's leading public broadcasters,it has already contributed hugely to our Union -helping us set and uphold the standards of public service journalism that matter most right now. Full Membership means we can now do even more to- gether:on platform accountability, on trusted news, on the resilience that public broadcasters need to build for the years ahead. Canada's voice in this community makes us stronger". Marie-Philippe Bouchard, President and CEO of CBC/Radio-Canada, said: "Thank you to the European Broadcasting Union for welcoming CBC/Radio- Canada as a full Member. This new chapter in our relationship with the EBU and its members will deepen our cooperation at a time when the collective impact of public service media is essential. It's an important milestone that will benefit people on both sides of the Atlantic by helping to com- bat disinformation and support cultural expression. "As a full Member,we are hitting the ground running by announcing our full participation in the Eurovision News Exchange. This will allow more Cana- dian news and perspectives to reach audiences in Europe, and bring more international coverage to Canadians." The vote to promote CBC/Radio-Canada to full Member followed a revision to the EBU's Statutes, also approved by the General Assembly today. The re- vised framework opens extra-European Membership to broadcasting organiza- tions from countries with a public service media system aligned with core Council of Europe standards and formal observer status with the Council of Europe. Canada meets both criteria. Founded in 1936 as a radio broadcaster, CBC/Radio-Canada today is a multi- platform public service media company serving Canadians across six time zones in English, French, and eight Indigenous languages. CBC/Radio-Canada's approach to shared standards and interoperability aligns directly with the EBU's role in technical coordination across Mem- bers. Its editorial standards have been independently validated by the Journalism Trust Initiative, and its research, co-production expertise and experience in digital rights management with major technology platforms add practical depth to what the EBU community can draw on together. The EBU's membership now spans 115 organizations across 57 countries. Juni 2027 statt. It seems to be mostly around 9340 / 9350 kHz on the days when I listen. I have also observed the 'official' Radio Payam (IRIB) broadcasting on 9310 kHz, but they are not on the air every day. It is interesting that this station has quite good modulation. This contrasts with other IRIB External Services frequencies from the Sirjan transmitter, on which the audio level is so low, it is difficult to understand the programme. According to a blog post by Masao Hosoya, the Japanese DXer, NHK World Radio Japan announced that it will change its 24-hour temporary transmis- sion to the Middle East to a 14-hour-a-day transmission starting July 1, considering the developments and changes in the situation of the region. Since March 1, in response to the deteriorating situation in the Middle East, the station had been conducting this 24-hour temporary transmission for Japanese nationals staying overseas in the region and elsewhere. Below is the URL of the official announcement. English translation of the official announcement: Regarding the Change in Broadcast Hours for the Temporary Transmission of NHK International Radio Broadcasts to the Middle East. In response to the situation in Iran, NHK had been conducting temporary shortwave transmissions of its Japanese-language international radio broadcast, NHK World Radio Japan, 24 hours a day to the Middle East region starting March 1. This was based on its international broadcasting role of providing information to Japanese nationals residing or traveling in the area. Under circumstances where internet connections and international phone calls were difficult to establish, NHK utilized shortwave radio, which is less susceptible to local authority regulations, to provide simultaneous broadcasts of NHK AM (formerly 'Radio 1'), as well as Overseas Safety In- formation regarding the Middle East region. Taking into account the deve- lopment of the situation, such as the signing of a memorandum toward ending the conflict between the United States and Iran and the improvement of in- ternet connectivity in Iran, the broadcast hours will be changed as follows to 14 hours a day starting Wednesday, July 1, 2026. The history of Soviet consumer radio production had its ups and downs, but the most revolutionary breakthrough occurred in the late 1980s. People had never expected such a huge selection of luxurious models. But first things first: After the end of the Great Patriotic War, the country had no time for luxury. Consumer radio production focused on mass demand, focusing on inexpensive radios and record players. High-end radio equipment was also developed and manufactured, but in terms of volume, it was nothing compared to the mass market. Saturation of the consumer radio market was only achieved in the late 1950s. Retailers were so overstocked that sales with discounts of up to 50% were necessary. The advent of the transistor dramatically changed the approach to the consumer radio industry. It turned out that we could easily compete with manufacturers from capitalist countries in the transistor radio segment. Mass production of transistor radios for capitalist countries began in the mid-1960s. They took appearance very seriously: the design of the radio cases from those years is still pleasing to the eye. BBC article posted today: "BBC Radio 4 broadcasts on Long Wave {bc band} will end on 27 June 2026, ahead of the Long Wave platform closing on 30 June 2026. The Long Wave infrastructure is owned and operated by a third party who have advised us the platform is now coming to the end of its life as a technology. Continuing would require significant investment to replace ageing equipment and sustain a platform now used by a very small propor- tion of listeners. Digital listening has also grown significantly over the past decade, with the majority of UK radio listening now taking place digitally or online. The BBC's focus is on investing in platforms that best serve audiences and provide resilient coverage for the future. The BBC first announced in 2022 that it expected Long Wave to close, and in March 2024 ended separate scheduling on Radio 4 Long Wave in anticipa- tion of this change. No programmes will be lost as a result of the closure. Radio 4's program- mes and services previously associated with Long Wave will continue to be available across other BBC platforms. Radio 4 remains widely available on FM, DAB, BBC Sounds, smart speakers and television platforms, including Freeview, satellite and connected TV. FM remains the main fallback option and is available to 99.5% of UK house- holds. Over the past months we have provided clear information to help listeners move to alternative ways of receiving Radio 4. This includes on-air inter- ruption messages, support through BBC help pages and phone support via the BBC Helpdesk. We also work closely with organisations that support vulnerable audiences around platform closures, to ensure listeners are helped in a timely and sensitive way. Long Wave is not classified as Critical National Infrastructure. The Shipping Forecast does not constitute part of the UK's mandatory Mari- time Safety Information (MSI) service; it has always been a UK-specific, complementary broadcast. MSI is considered of vital concern to all vessels and the Maritime and Coastguard Agency encourage all seafarers to make every effort to receive it. Listeners who need support can visit BBC help pages or contact the BBC Helpdesk for practical advice on how to continue listening". Presume three days of retune announcements after Radio 4 broadcasts end. (Mike Barraclough-UK, via BrDXC-UK groups.io bcnews June 24) U.K. Telegraph: The death of BBC long wave is pure audio totalitarianism [Nicest thing I've read in a long time about the charms of the wireless... - mc] The death of BBC long wave is pure audio totalitarianism. The broadcaster's decision to retire this technology will deprive us of a vital link to radio history _By Simon_Heffer. For those who still have prehistoric radios - or let us call them, proper- ly, wirelesses - another feature has become redundant. The BBC, the one British broadcasting organisation still to use long wave, will, from this weekend, cease to do so. Once, the 1,500m wavelength was used for Radio 2; when the latter went to FM, LW became an alternative home for Radio 4. Now, it is Radio History. The BBC does not own the technology that allows broadcasts on long wave. That technology is said to be near the end of its life, and its owners see no point in renewing it.The BBC is not prepared to pay for it to continue. It announced that it would be closing long wave down in 2024, to give the small numbers still listening on it a chance to find other means to re- ceive Radio 4's output: not least to ensure that the nautical world had time to obtain receivers that would pick up the Shipping Forecast on FM or DAB+. When Radio4 operated on both long wave and FM, it would sometimes use long wave for alternative programming: most commonly, Today in Parliament or the Daily Service would find themselves relocated there. Best of all, for those holidaying on the near continent, Test Match Special used to be there. Thanks to the long range over which the long-wave signal could tra- vel, one could sit in France and listen to events at Trent Bridge or the Oval. Now, one needs a Wi-Fi connection, and sometimes finds that one is in a country where the service is not, for reasons of broadcasting rights, available. That was the joy of long wave. Apart from whatever the BBC was putting out at the time, turning the dial would bring up all sorts of other weird things from far afield, proof that there was radio life out there beyond the English Channel. And part of the fun of long wave was that it was er- ratic. The signal was often more reliable in winter than in summer; it could be horrible after the sun set. (Lacking a degree in physics, I am not sure why this should have been so, but doubtless the explanation was perfectly rational.) Of course, the old technology was not perfect. But as with the revival in recent years of vinyl, decades after it was supposed to have been killed and buried by digital sound, what the listener got in the days when it was just long wave - and medium wave, the use of which the BBC also wishes to end next year - was raw authenticity. The snap, crackle and pop; the fad- ings in and out; the occasional noises that suggested a hurricane, a juggernaut or a small aircraft had invaded one's sitting room: they all added to the sense of adventure that the wireless used to present. But now, such sentiments are confined to antiquity. The technologies that excited our forebears a century ago, and that were once cutting-edge, are now in the past. Apparently, long wave is still used to communicate with submarines when deep in the ocean; but its place in the British home is gone. We are supposed to feel no regret. After all, for a small outlay of money, everyone can now have a crystal-clear digital signal. We are victims of audio totalitarianism: only the clearest, most perfect sound can be to- lerated. It always, now, must be as if the broadcaster is in the room next to you. But some of us rather liked it when the broadcaster was far away, and sounded as though he or she was. It made us feel the full effort of being communicated with. Now, internet radios bring us, at the press of a but- ton, voices from Australia, South America or Africa, as if they were right next to us. Where is the adventure, the sense of discovery, in that ? Perhaps no one will mourn long wave but, actually, we should. (via Mike Cooper-GA-USA, wor June 27) BBC Midland Today - Radio 4 Longwave Closedown. Radio4 LW has run on automation for many years so presumably that was just set to cut to the closedown loop at 01:00. The last pip starts at 01:00too hence LW listeners only heard the very start of it. Although it could have been manually switched away on the BH audio router, I doubt it was. It would have been a lot less precise and also why wouldn't they just use the automation that already runs the output ? Radio 4 continuity would have just done exactly the same as they do every night. The LW opt outs are / were done elsewhere. I didn't know the status of BH's LW off air monitoring but I imagine if there is some then someone will have been listening to make sure the correct thing was going to air ... although the last two months it not been in doubt which version of Radio 4 the LW transmitters have been putting out. Many thanks to SWLing Post contributor David Iurescia, who shares this BBC article about the end of an era in British broadcasting: the BBC has per- manently switched off its longwave Radio 4 service after nearly a century on the air. The SWLing Post Read on blog The closure marks the end of longwave broadcasting in the UK, with the historic 198 kHz longwave transmitters at Droitwich, Westerglen, and Burghead now falling silent after decades of service. For many radio enthusiasts, this represents far more than the retirement of an aging transmission system—it is the closing chapter of one of broadcasting's most iconic services, one that carried everything from the Shipping Forecast to Test Match Special and reached listeners across the British Isles and beyond. Sad but high power - mw should be retained at site. BBC Radio 4 Long Wave has been switched off, prompting calls to protect the Wychbold transmitter masts. The two 700ft structures near Droitwich carried the BBC's long wave signal across the UK for decades and are visible from the M5. As expected, the 198 LW service was being turned off this weekend, and it ended programming after the shipping forecast and the national anthem last night. Local history experts and the Twentieth Century Society have begun a cam- paign for the masts to be listed, citing their historic, engineering and technological significance. The site began broadcasting in September 1934 after Droitwich was chosen for its central location. The BBC said the closure followed the ageing of the long wave equipment and the move of most listening to FM, DAB and online platforms. The site is owned by Arqiva. Regardless of programming, and day-of-week variations, I inspect and calculate hours of usage. This should be considered approx., also disregarding any errors in the sked, outages. Most transmitters on at any one hour ? 13 at 01-02 UT; 11 at 03-04 UT Least at any one hour? 4 at 13-15 UT, 16-21 UT. Most-used transmitters, 24h: 7730, 9395, 15770 kHz Least-used transmitter: 0 hours: #1 Runner-up for least used: 3 hours 5800 kHz Total hours of 14 transmitters per day: 153 Maximum possible: 24 x 14 = 336 153 hrs divided by 336 hrs = 45.5 % Or disregarding #1 which is not in use at all: 153 hrs divided by 312 hrs = 49 % Obviously, since each transmitter uses only one frequency, unlike some years in the past, some of the lowest ones are useless in the daytime, less so some of the highest ones at night. If there were demand and capa- bility, many more daytime hours could be achieved using higher bands such as 11 and 13 MHz, not scheduled at all. Of course, a lot of WRMI airtime is unpaid, such as WRN relays. They are to be lauded for devoting so much resource to 'public service'programming. Otherwise the usage % of capacity would be much lower. (Glenn Hauser-OK-USA, BrDXC-UK iogr / wor June 24) VATICAN STATE 9705 kHz Tue, June 23, at 20.37-20.47 UT.
