(Mark Taylor, Lake Farm Park-WI-USA, via NASWA Electronic Flashsheet #1264 July 19) CUBA All DXers are well aware of Cuba's international radio broadcasting network, Radio Habana Cuba, with its pretentious identification: "This is Radio Habana Cuba. Transmitiendo desde Cuba - territorio libre de America" (it needs no translation). The radio station, founded on the initiative of Fidel Castro and Ernesto Che Guevara, began broadcasting on May 1, 1961. In addition to its primary language, Spanish, the station has broadcast in eight other languages throughout its history, six of which are still in use (English, French, Creole, Portuguese, Arabic, and Esperanto),while two indigenous languages, Guarani and Quechua, were previously used. There were also attempts to broadcast in Italian. Perhaps some DXers still remember that this station planned to begin broadcasting in Russian.A Rus- sian-language DX program on Canadian Radio RCI on December 18, 1999, re- ported that the Moscow DXers' conference on December 4, 1999, cited Ameri- can sources as citing a planned start of Radio Habana Cuba broadcasts in Russian in late 2000. However, something apparently went wrong, plans changed, and broadcasts never began. However, a Russian-language page was added to the Prensa Latina (PL) news agency's website in the early 2000s: The agency markets itself as Latin American, but its headquarters are lo- cated in Havana.The Russian page became increasingly less informative over the years, especially compared to the Spanish and English pages, and since June 2025, it has ceased being updated altogether. Of the seven language pages used on the portal, the Spanish page is of particular interest, as in addition to printed information, it also features a 24-hour online broadcast of Prensa Latina Radio, which can essentially be considered Cuba's second international broadcaster. Broadcasts are in Spanish, but until January 2024, there were also pro- grams in English. Several years ago, the portal broadcast a specially launched Prensa Latina Radio web channel for a year for listeners in Boli- via. Currently, the audio player on the PL portal is not functioning, possibly in the Chrome browser, and the portal itself and the external audio stream of Prensa Latina Radio are blocked in Russia. The portal features some videos under the 'Prensa Latina TV' brand, available for viewing on YouTube with English dubbing (without auto-dubbing) and Spanish dubbing(with auto- dubbing in English, Arabic, and Portuguese). Auto-dubbing in Russian may also be available soon. Czechia's tallest structures are looking for a new owner, but whoever takes them on will inherit a massive repair bill and the possibility that the iconic towers could eventually disappear. The Liblice_B radio transmitters near CeskyBrod, two 355-meter towers com- pleted in 1976, have been put up for sale by Czech Radiocommunication(CRA) after losing their original purpose with the end of medium-wave broadcast- ing. The twin towers, which rank among Europe's tallest guyed structures, are now facing an uncertain future. While local residents and preservation groups hope the site can be trans- formed into a new attraction or repurposed for emergency services, the current owner has warned that significant investment will be required to keep the structures standing. CRA has not announced a fixed asking price for the Liblice transmitters, instead leaving the final amount open to negotiation with potential buyers. However, the company estimates that the new owner would need to invest at least CZK 170 million in urgent repairs and maintenance. The most pressing issue is the towers' anchoring system. Experts have de- termined that the existing support cables have a lifespan only until the end of 2026, with replacement costs estimated at around CZK 120 million. Further expenses would include anti-corrosion protection and carrying out a major overhaul of the elevators that run inside the towers. The future owner would also be responsible for maintaining aviation warn- ing lights and other safety systems, as the towers represent a significant obstacle for aircraft. CRA has warned that additional hidden defects may be discovered once detailed inspections are carried out. Even demolition would be a costly undertaking, requiring extensive plann- ing, environmental measures, waste removal and safety precautions due to the size and location of the structures. The Liblice transmitters originally served as part of the country's me- diumwave radio network, but their importance declined with the transition to digital broadcasting. Medium-wave transmissions from the site ended in 2021, and the towers have largely stood unused since then. Local initiatives have opposed plans for their removal, arguing that the structures have become a recognizable landmark of the region. The civic association 'Spolek pratel obce' Liblice has suggested several possible future uses, including opening the towers to tourists or allowing them to serve emergency services or the military. The towers are equipped with elevators reaching the top, which could po- tentially make visitor access possible if the necessary safety upgrades were completed. However, such a transformation would require a signifi- cant investment and agreement between the owner, authorities and potential operators. Czechia's tallest structures, the 355-meter Liblice_B radio towers, are facing an uncertain future after being put up for sale. What do you think should happen to Czechia's tallest towers ? The Liblice_B towers have already survived previous threats to their exi- stence. Smaller 150-meter transmitters at the nearby Liblice_A site were demolished in 2004, while a 270-meter tall radio tower in Topolna in eastern Czechia was brought down in 2022. For now, the fate of the country's tallest structures remains uncertain. This faulty TX modulation SW unit observed there in past two decades, never repaired that unit / audio line feed, was in use for example often on 9490 kHz night service of Radio Republica programm in Spanish back signal from Europe TX site towards Cuban audience in central America. I was pleasantly surprised to get almost perfect reception of TDF DRM digital mode transmission from France last night on 11870 kHz at 04.16 UT. <20260719_0416_UT_11870_khz_DRM_France_TDF.mp4> Signal was quite strong, +10dBm over S9 with only one minor drop at the beginning. Only drawback is the really tinny audio. They covered a story about the use of helicopters in war and a feature about life in Panama. With its demolition, a landmark of Junglinster disappears after almost a century. The three 215-meter-high steel masts have stood on the Lenster- bierg hill above the baroque church and the town hall since 1932. In its early days, the transmitter was the most powerful longwave transmitter in Europe. It operated continuously until 1974, after which it served as a backup until it was finally shut down in 2023. RTL announced over a year ago that the three towers were no longer needed and that dismantling was planned. This will now be carried out by con- trolled demolition. A firm date has not yet been set, an RTL spokesperson told LW in response to an inquiry. "For legal reasons, dismantling before the beginning of October is not possible," he explained. Not all the ne- cessary permits from the authorities have yet been obtained. The municipality of Junglinster apparently had little room for maneuver. "The antennas are not listed as historical monuments. Therefore, the mayor approved the corresponding request from the operator, CLT-UFA," confirms Tom Weber, alderman of the municipality of Junglinster. The permit is now valid for two years. According to Mayor Ben Ries, only the upper part of the masts will be demolished by explosives; the lower part, which is ac- cessible by machinery, will be dismantled using conventional methods. In April 2025, a teenager climbed one of the three pylons without safety equipment, triggering a large-scale rescue operation by the police and CGDIS (Grand-Ducal Fire and Rescue Corps). And okay, the claim that it was the strongest transmitter in the universe is of course essential for such material. What this report omits is the fate of the station building. It was the focus of attempts to put the complex under preservation order, challenged by, I understand, both the Junglinster municipality and the RTL subsidiary BCE that owns the station. Apparently they succeeded in killing these attempts and so everything is going to disappear. The rapid completion of the transmission facility was remarkable; broadcasting operations commenced in 1933, although the station had al- ready conducted its first test broadcast on February 12, 1932. Land re- gistry records from 1932 list the main building — featuring three large, cascading water basins used to cool the diesel generators — as well as the three semi - detached houses for the staff. To meet the facility's operational needs, the core building was expanded over the years with several additions, creating a complex where the va- rious construction phases can still be traced today. For instance, a 150kW transmitter was put into service in early 1951, requiring an extension to be added to the center of the northwest side. In addition to this exten- sion, land registry records indicate that an extension was also added to the northeast wing of the building in 1953. The main building and the three water basins situated to its southeast form the core of the complex. While the basic layout of the three basins remains intact, only the two lower basins still contain water; the upper- most basin now houses two large parabolic antennas. A stately driveway leading to the main building—designed to reflect the grandeur associated with Baroque architecture—was also originally planned. The composition of the structures at Junglinster bears a striking resem- blance to the Grimeton Radio Station, built between 1922 and 1924 near Varberg, Sweden. The transmitter's primary power source was located in the southwestern wing. Initially, two powerful 800-hp diesel engines drove the massive AC generators. One of these historic diesel engines, dating from 1931, is now housed in the Science Center in Differdange. Two additional diesel engines from the manufacturer MAN were installed in the mid-to-late 1950s; this required extending the southwestern wing by one window bay, a modification carried out with careful attention to maintaining the ori- ginal architectural style. Two diesel engines — dating from 1954 and 1960 — remain in the transmis- sion station today. They symbolize the original operator's (Compagnie Luxembourgeoise de la Radiodiffusion) ambition to reach every corner of the globe with the new transmitter. Comprising the main building, transmission towers, and former staff hous- ing, the Junglinster transmission station forms an architectural ensemble that defines the local landscape; it is also considered a site of histo- rical significance, particularly due to the events that unfolded there during the Second World War. Given its significance in the history of architecture and technology, as well as its ties to the history of Luxembourg and Europe, the Jung- linster transmission station clearly merits preservation. However, the three freestanding pylons were not granted protection, because they are of more recent construction. Their demolition was delayed following protests from environmentalists be- cause birds had nested on them ! For satellite antennas and shortwave broadcasts (Onda), the company uses two other masts near the building, which are therefore not affected by the demolition. It seems uncertain because SNRT, its new owner, is refusing to comment, but the transmitter's power has been reduced on 171 kHz. The history of this established radio station is quite curious. It was on March 28, 1978, during a visit to France by Hassan II, that the decision was made to create a Franco - Moroccan commercial radio station, and the project management was entrusted to the French company SOFIRAD. The Franco-Moroccan agreement establishing this radio station, as well as its specifications, remained confidential, and its legal status remained unclear because the documents were never published in the Official Bulletin. Radio Mediterranee Internationale Medi_1 was launched in 1980 and was 25.5% owned by the Moroccan Bank for Foreign Trade, 25.5% by the Omnium Nord Africain group, and 49% by France. The French stake was held through the Compagnie Internationale de Radio et Television (CIRT), whose parent company was SOFIRAD, which belonged to the French state. From the outset, France (which held only a minority stake) guaranteed that this radio station would never become part of the French public broadcasting holding company, Audiovisuel exterieur de la France. A state subsidy (in the range of 1 to 2 million EURros) was paid to Medi_1 for about twenty years. However, this subsidy was insufficient to achieve operational balance. From 1991, CIRT, representing Sofirad, was responsible for recruiting French journalists and making them available to Medi_1. A subsidy of 7 million Francs from the French government covered personnel costs. Following France's withdrawal, Medi_1 became a private, commercial com- pany. French and Moroccan partners, including banks and large corpora- tions, were represented on the board of directors. In recent years, the Moroccan government's desire to create a public broadcasting sector, including the acquisition of 86.3% of Medi_1 radio by the National Broadcasting and Television Company (SNRT), has brought this operation to fruition. It is impossible to have a clear vision of the future of longwave radio in Morocco, especially since SNRT has ceased broadcasting from its Azila transmitter. Medi_1 covers Morocco on FM.Longwave radio covers the greater Maghreb region (Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia, Mauritania, and part of Libya), as well as the Mediterranean coast (Spain, France, and Italy). Maintaining the Nador transmitter represents a significant financial bur- den. The antennas underwent major upgrades in 2009 at a cost of €30 mil- lion, 50% of which was funded by the Moroccan government. However, the transmitters have not been replaced and are now nearing the end of their lifespan. According to Yandex's new rules, if the file size on your Disk account is exceeded, you will no longer be able to use mail. The company offers two options: delete unnecessary files and emails or purchase a paid plan. Yandex is merging its Disk and mail storage services. For users, this means that free Yandex cloud storage will be reduced. Until recently, only the total file size on Yandex Disk was taken into ac- count. Starting July 27,the combined data volume across both services will be taken into account. This was announced in a notice sent to users by the company. For the free plan, the total cloud storage will remain the same-5 giga- bytes. If the storage is full, users will be unable to edit, share, or up- load new files. A Russian-language DX program on Canadian Radio RCI on March 19, 1990, an- nounced plans to establish a Russian service on Swiss Radio International (SRI). A reference was made to a representative of this radio station speaking at the International Conference on Radio Broadcasting,which was then taking place in Canada. However,despite experimental SRI programs (in their usual broadcast languages) beginning on HF toward Eastern Europe and the USSR in September 1990, a Russian service was never launched. Many years later, after SRI ceased broadcasting in 2004,its website was transformed into the Swiss-Info information portal. Russian became the tenth language on this portal on March 23, 2013. His Russian page (currently blocked in Russia) contains electronic newspaper content with a small amount of video material. DJ with heavy accent about 11805 kHz as if it's on, but later mentions 9915 kHz. I agree with the listener who complained, 'too much talk'. The western portion of the Europe will experience a solar eclipse on August 12, 2026, and the Radio Society of Great Britain (RSGB) is plann- ing a series of operating events in which the ham radio and mediumwave listening communities can participate. The RSGB's regular, live-streamed program Tonight@8, recently hosted Steve Nichols, G0YKA to describe the events.
