It was an absolute chaos the first days and the whole week, the major ISP has management software that stopped working because it was time bound, the SMS arrived a few days with AST timezone, a lot of time tied services stopped working, and the "problem" was broad and transversal. Airlines, online services, auth services using 2FA codes, universities, etc. All because the general public lacks the understanding of the UTC concept, most of the people adjusted the time on their devices to the ac- tual time and then skewed the UTC with them. I had to help a lot of people online and in person to adjust the devices to use time from the internet / network and Puerto Rico timezone or di- rectly UTC-04 to adjust. All because they (the government) says it helps save oil on the electric generation... Brussels EU, Nov 2 (CTK) -The European Federation of Journalists (EFJ) and the International Federation of Journalists (IFJ) today expressed support for Czech Television (CT) and Czech Radio (CRo) staff that are to strike on Tuesday against the plan to scrap television and radio license fees, Czech Journalists Union has told CTK. The Czech Journalists Union, also expressed its full solidarity with the employees of both media outlets. More than thirty international and national journalists'unions and organi- sations have so far endorsed the statement, including Reporters Without Borders (RSF) and the European Broadcasting Union (EBU). In the statement, the signatories said they are watching the actions of Prime Minister Andrej Babis's government with great concern. They noted that on October 24 at 4:36, the governing coalition pushed through a bill in its first reading that would eliminate fees for both media outlets and make them directly dependent on the state budget, while reducing their funding by approximately 15 percent. According to them, such a model opens the door to political pressure and threatens editorial independence, while the European Media Freedom Act (EMFA) requires adequate, sustainable, and predictable funding for public service media. That is why, on November 3, the organisations will stand firmly alongside the employees of Czech Television and Czech Radio, who will go on strike to protect the future of public service media. They support their right to organise, protest and defend their professional independence, dignity at work, and the public's fundamental right to independent information, the statement reads. It said they knew that the independence of public media is not always lost due to overt censorship or direct political orders. It can be gradually undermined by legislative changes, financial pressure, and an atmosphere of uncertainty in which it becomes increasingly difficult for journalists and editors to work freely and without fear of repercussions. The time 4:36, when the Chamber of Deputies, with the votes of coalition lawmakers from ANO, Freedom and Direct Democracy (SPD), and Motorists, ap- proved the amendment to the law in the first reading without expert de- bate, has become a symbol across Europe, according to the Czech Journa- lists'Union. Journalists are sharing images on social media showing clocks at that exact time, said Magdalena Sodomkova, vice chair of the union, who is in contact with partner organisations. Tuesday's strike was called by the Verejnopravne (In Public Interest) ini- tiative, which brings together employees of both media outlets, in respon- se to the priority consideration of the government's bill in the Chamber of Deputies. According to her, the change threatens the independence and stability of CT and CRo. A similar warning strike took place on June 22. The budgets of both institutions are set to be reduced by a total of 1.4 billion crowns compared to this year. CT is operating with a budget of 8.5 billion crowns this year, and according to Director General Hynek Chudarek, any reduction in the coming years would mean a curtailment of public ser- vice broadcasting. ($1 21.814 crowns) (pvr_dr_rtj, via Mike Cooper-GA-USA, wor Nov 3) CZECH REPUBLIC CTK: Czech media commentaries. Prague, Nov 2 (CTK) - Politicians, activists and journalists downplay the fact that the Civic Democratic Party(now opposition ODS) wanted to abolish the licence fees for public media and transfer their funding to the state budget, just as the current government plans to do now, Miroslav Korecky says in daily Mlada fronta Dnes. ODS chairman Martin Kupka and his predecessor Petr Fiala also downplayed it by saying that it had been only something one of their senators had wanted years ago. Let's be clear: both politicians are knowingly lying. The Senate voted on a proposal to abolish licence fees for CzechTelevision (CT) and Czech Radio (CRo) in December 2009, and this proposal was sub- mitted by ODS senator Richard Svoboda. But this was no idea of a single senator. Svoboda was the head of the ODS senators, Brno Mayor and a member of the Council for radio and TV broadcasting. Though he wrote this short bill himself, all the 36 ODS senators supported it in the vote. During the discussion on the bill in the Senate, ODS senator Jaroslav Kubera argued that it made no difference for the independence and freedom of public media whether they are funded from the state budget or from li- cence fees. Kubera even proposed that the licence fees for CT and CRo be voluntary. In 2009, the proposal eventually was not passed in the upper house of par- liament because the Social Democrats, TOP 09, Mayors and Independents (STAN) and the Christian Democrats(KDU-CSL) voted against it. If there had been one more vote for the proposal, it would be have been passed in the Senate then. The ODS even had the possible abolition of the licence fees in its plat- form for the general election in 2010 when Petr Necas led the party. At that time, Kupka was the ODS spokesman. Fiala became education minister in the cabinet of PM Necas, Korecky writes. (Roger Thauer-D, wor and via wwdxc BC-DX TopNews Nov 3) HUNGARY Hungarian Uprising: Interactive website gives access to hundreds of broadcasts to listen to in "real time". I've been fascinated by this marvellous website launched recently: It has compiled many recordings of radio stations made during the Hunga- rian Uprising (whose 70th anniversary is being marked right now) by Radio Free Europe's monitoring stations at Schleissheim and Moosburg, presenting them in an interactive interface that allows you to choose to hear what was being broadcast at a certain time and date on a particular mediumwave or shortwave station in Hungary, or broadcasting to Hungary. It includes recordings of mediumwave stations controlled by the old regime, when they were captured by the insurgents, and when they came back under the control of the new communist government. Plus shortwave clandestine stations, etc. Here's how a Hungarian website has explained the site (translated): After 70 years, the radio broadcasts of the 1956 Revolution are back on the air - anyone can listen to them here. The Department of Media and Communication of Eoetvoes Lorand University has created a special internet radio time machine for the 70th anniversary of the 1956 revolution. More than 200 hours of contemporary radio record- ings will be available on the new online platform: visitors can choose a time and radio station to listen to what broadcasts Hungarians could re- ceive during the days of the revolution. Historical audio recordings in- clude recordings by Kossuth Radio, Radio Free Europe and free stations in the countryside. The project called Radio of 1956 was presented at the Faculty of Humani- ties of Eoetvoes Lorand University, timed to coincide with the upcoming celebration on 23 October. The aim of the initiative is to allow visitors not only to listen to historical recordings separate from each other, but to experience what it must have been like to follow the events of the re- volution in the autumn of 1956 by searching among the radios. Henrik Hargitai, lecturer at the Department of Media at Eoetvoes Lorand University, responsible for the project, informed Media1 that the system will make more than 200 hours of contemporary audio material publicly available. The recordings include broadcasts of Kossuth Radio, Radio Free Europe, and several rural radio stations. Listen to the radio as if it were 1956 again. One of the most interesting elements of the development is the interac- tive timeline and the station selector. Users can select the day and time they are interested in, and then switch radio stations between the avai- lable recordings. Thus, the system also shows the different information that listeners could get from the programs of each station at the same time. It may be particu- larly interesting to compare the broadcasts of Budapest and rural radios, as well as Hungarian-language broadcasts broadcast from abroad. The site is not exclusive to audio recordings. Where the original audio material is no longer available, but written sources have preserved what was said, visitors can read textual reconstructions. The interface also indicates if only the title or existence of a show is known. Historical recordings not widely available for decades. There is a special archival story behind the project. A significant part of the radio programmes broadcast during the 1956 revolution were preserv- ed thanks to the interception and recording service of Radio Free Europe. Cassette tapes were not widely available for decades. The materials were later transferred to the Historical Interviews Collection of National Szechenyi Library, where in the period before digitization, they could be researched, among other things, on versions played on video cassettes. The preservation and processing of archival recordings is the result of the work of several institutions and researchers over many years. The web development now presented is another step in making these audio documents easy to research and listen to for the general public. Programmes of the free radio stations in the countryside are also broad- cast. The project does not only focus on the most well-known national radio sta- tions. Special attention was also paid to rural and free radio stations operating during the 1956 revolution, whose broadcasts had been much less accessible until then. On the interactive interface, the surviving programs of different radios can be examined side by side. This can also help researchers and interest- ed parties to better understand when and how certain radio stations became independent of the previous political control, and how the official posi- tion of the Kadar regime later appeared in their broadcasts. Lesser-known episodes in the history of radio were also discussed. At the university presentation on 19 October, Iren Simandi, Ferenc Marko- vits and Bea Lukacs also gave presentations, and the website was presented by Henrik Hargitai, lecturer at the media department of ELTE and leader of the project. Iren Simandi spoke about the relationship between political changes and the operation of the radio. He recalled that in the period before the 1956 revolution, the political detente associated with Imre Nagy was also per- ceptible on the radio, but during the later restructuring, editorial work became uncertain, as there was no clear information available about the processes taking place in the political leadership. Ferenc Markovits also recalled lesser-known events in the history of the Hungarian Radio, during which the institution became the focus of attacks or extraordinary situations. An incident related to the program Pop- tarisznya was also mentioned, as well as October 23, 2006, when the radio was preparing for a possible attack, which ultimately did not happen. Bea Lukacs presented the history of the survival of historical audio re- cordings. He emphasized that a series of coincidences and fortunate cir- cumstances were necessary for the recordings preserved in the archives of Radio Free Europe to survive and become available to researchers and listeners decades later. On 23 October, the system will take you to the ether of seventy years ago On the 70th anniversary of the outbreak of the 1956 revolution, on 23 October 2026, visitors can return to the radio world of historical events with the help of a special online station finder. The website is now available, so those interested can browse the timeline, surviving audio recordings and written documents even before the anniver- sary of the revolution. The leader of the project, which was implemented with the participation of volunteers, is Henrik Hargitai. Alexander Miatlikov on the World of Radio Io group posted this article: RTL news October 29th (English translation) The webpage includes 17 photos of the two transmitter sites. On November 6th, the masts in Beidler will be blown up. They are due to drop around 3 p.m., RTL is streaming from the location. It is a date that not only the people of the municipality of Jonglenster have been waiting for, but which is already attracting supra-regional in- terest: The transmission towers in Beidler (Beidweiler) and Lenster will be blown up, that has been known for some time, it's just that the timing was not yet clear - until now. At least for the 3 towers in Beidler, there is now certainty: They will be blown up on Friday, November 6th at around 3 p.m. Then the company Liesegang from Huerth (D) will detonate the explo- sives, and the necessary preparations for this are underway. Do you want to experience the moment of the explosion, but are abroad dur- ing All Saints' Day? No problem ! RTL is recording everything in picture and sound and is also streaming it live. The 3 masts in Beidler belong to Broadcasting Center Europe (BCE), a subsidiary of RTL Group. From 1972 un- til Jan 2, 2023 (1 a.m.), they sent longwave with RTL's French-language radio program to France. The transmitter consists of three identical masts, which are 290m high and are held up by guy ropes. Unlike the antennas of Jonglaenster, which become wider at the bottom, those of Beidler do not remain standing, but must be held up by ropes, or rather supported. Regarding Jonglenster: It is not yet known when the "steel lattice masts" will be demolished. They are 215 meters high. When they were built, from 1954 to 1955 and the third in 1959, they were 250 meters high, but were shortened to the current height of 215 meters in 1983. They have long been the reserve for Beidler. "Congressional Restructuring and the Voice of America (VOA). Yes, it is possible for the U.S. Congress to bring the Voice of America (VOA) back to full operation, as Congress holds the statutory mandate and funding authority over the agency under federal law. * Congressional Funding: Congress previously intervened against executive branch shutdown attempts by allocating $643 million to the U.S. Agency for Global Media (USAGM), far exceeding the administration's proposed $153 million budget to close down the agency. * Legislative Action vs. Executive Push: Lawmakers established VOA's char- ter and control its funding, meaning a supportive or bipartisan majority in Congress can legally compel and finance its restoration. For instance, the House previously passed a bipartisan spending package(341-79) to main- tain operations. * Practical & Operational Hurdles: Even with congressional funding and fe- deral court orders mandating the reinstatement of hundreds of sidelined journalists and staff, full recovery faces heavy practical obstacles. Rebuilding physical infrastructure, replacing scrapped or lost broadcast equipment, rehiring personnel, and restoring global audience trust are ex- pected to take significant time and resources." The third point is sobering and another way to say it is "don't hold your breath". (Richard Langley-NB-CAN, wor Nov 4) USA Radio World on WEWN Closure. EWTN Global Catholic Network has announced that it will cease broadcasts on its shortwave radio service, WEWN, on Oct. 31 after 34 years of opera- tion. The decision was announced on Friday by EWTN's board of governors. WEWN broadcasts had already ceased, as the station has been completely off the air for months ... I have not heard it, nor have I seen any reports of it lately. The station had previously experienced multiple extensive out- ages. The effort over the past se- veral years has been half-hearted at best. I do know from from friends in Cuba that they had an audience there. EWTN, WEWN's parent if you will, has become a Roman Catholic Fox News. In fact, one of their chief personalities,Raymond Arroyo, appears quite often on Fox, that's how ovverlapping the two are. Pope Francis delivered a veiled criticism of them sayong "a large Catholic television channel that has no hesitation in continually speaking ill of (me)". In 2021 Gloria Purvis, host of the show Morning Gloria, was fired when she dared speak out in favour of those protesting about the murder of George Floyd. At the same time they have given space to Trump to spew statements like "you Catholics love your second amendment" and go unchallenged. (Tony Pavick, Hope-BC-CAN, wor Oct 31) 15610 kHz was already finally dropped, no longer appearing at It's a funny coincidence that this final surrender comes in the very mo- ment when Maria Montserrat Alvarado, so far the head of EWTN News, takes over responsibility for the media apparatus of the Vatican. She recently assured that its editorial line will not change, but I will only believe that when there will be indeed no change of the tone. (Kai Ludwig-D, wor Oct 31) EWTN is the brainchild of the Poor Clare nun Angelica — born Rita Rizzo (1944-2016) — who founded a new convent in Alabama in 1962 and began mak- ing public appearances in 1971, starting with Bible study sessions. A visit to a television station in Chicago in 1978 gave her the idea to utilize this medium. What began as the provision of content for other out- lets evolved into an independent satellite and cable network in 1981. With a donation of 23 million dollars, Dutch billionaire Piet Derksen (d. 1996) made it possible for the organization to expand into international short- wave radio. Four transmitters, each with a nominal power of 500 kW, were constructed and put into operation in 1992, accompanied by eight curtain antennas. The facility was assigned the call sign WEWN and was located near the town of Vandiver, just under 20kilometers from the EWTN headquarters. The head- quarters itself is situated in Irondale, an eastern suburb of Birmingham, the largest city in Alabama. At the height of its expansion,EWTN broadcast on shortwave in 26languages. This included German from the very beginning; however, the endeavor was effectively futile, hampered by unfavorable broadcast times (for instance, in 1993, the German-language segment aired only at midnight) and, at best, mediocre reception quality. Consequently, starting around 2000, efforts to reach German-speaking Europe shifted from shortwave radio to television. In 2011, this evolved into a German branch, which has been broadcasting under a license from the state of North Rhine- estphalia since 2016. In 1993, Rizzo began to openly oppose liberal forces within the Roman Catholic Church. Her first strategic move was to successfully dissuade the U.S. bishops from operating their own television network. When they sought to integrate their operations with EWTN following the closure of their own network CTNA, Rizzo coolly informed them that the channel belonged to her. Regarding the direction taken since then, it was not secular circles, but rather a Catholic voice that offered a clear assessment: EWTN had become "the Fox News of religious broadcasters." In 2019, EWTN promoted the reac- tionary stances of two German figures on a global scale: Gerhard Mueller — who had already been removed from his post but remained a useful instru- ment for influencing church policy—and none other than Joseph Ratzinger. EWTN's German-language sce continues to operate as a branch of the Iron- dale-based organization. For insight into its editorial content, one might look at recent critiques regarding its coverage of the Catholic World Youth Day. The current Pope and his inner circle do not hold EWTN in high regard. Beyond formal, objective criticisms, there is one particularly blunt remark: "They are the work of the devil. I've even told some of them that myself". What was achieved in television in 1995 was set to be extended to the realm of news agencies in 2022: as part of their increasingly reactionary agenda, the U.S. bishops sought to shut down the Catholic News Service — the American counterpart to Germany's KNA — and cede this field to EWTN as well. Ultimately, however, the service was unexpectedly allowed to continue. (Glenn Hauser-OK-USA, wor Nov 4) Re: Radio World on WEWN Closure. In Kai Ludwig's post its says "Rizzo (MotherAngelica) coldly informed them that the station (EWTN) belonged to her. " It is worth noting that a significant change took place at EWTN in 2002. MotherAngelica suffered two strokes leaving her unable to run the network. She appointed Michael Warsaw as CEO as a part of a move to move the runn- ing of the from the hands of her religious order to secular management, although not secular ownership. Over the years, particularly after her death in 2016,Warsaw moved the net- work into a more politically conservative space and while claiming to en- dorse no presidential candidate, softly endorsed trump. It continues to do so to this day, turning a blind eye to things such as trump criticism of Pope Leo and his posting of him as an alter-christus. This move to secular management has worked to shield it from censure by the US Conference of Catholic Bishops, a group that it had battled with through its life time. The network survives on user donations only and brings in $111 million a year. Its expenses are high, $98 million, so its profit is $13 million.
